Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

It warms my heart to see you around duggan. I assume you create that same warm energy in person. Wouldn't it be nice to have a future free enough to be able to meet as a group? Imagine a :420: meet and greet. Mmmmmm Pot luck and home grown. DrZiggy would rock! :laughtwo::green_heart:

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

Once again, thanks so much for the help. I had asked a question about worm composting but hadn't seen an answer. Just wondering what is everyone's opinion on using non-organic vegetable scraps compared to non-GMO scraps? Is there a noticeable difference and would any trace amounts of the bad stuff pass thru into the castings? Apologize if this is off-topic. I'm just trying to get everything down right before I start my highbrix or LOS. Still trying to decide where I want to go regarding that!

Btw you guys are the best and I appreciate the indepth answers I get from all of you!

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

LOL @ CO. I don't like bugs in my grow room. I have had to kill off fungus gnats and spider mites. this seems to be the biggest draw back of living soil? Can't kill the bugs without killing your soil?

With all due respect to Doc, a healthy organic soil will be an environment that will keep the numbers of problematic species at a controllable minimum. As a fellow earthling, I'm ok with controllable. I have no problem sharing my world with others. This carries over into my human interactions as well. You don't have to bend to my will to be acceptable.

With soil it's finding that balance point where your plants gain the greatest advantage. Believe it or not, this is achievable in a manner that doesn't require eradication of entire species of critters. Yes, this is new and scary thinking to many of you, and I respect where you're coming from, but it is possible to create this type of interactive and diverse community in the confines of our relatively infinitesimally small pots within our closets and tents.

Back up a bit and reread my previous post about soil health.

Then treat yourself to this find I stumbled onto just now. I've only skimmed it myself, but you can be sure I'll give it a thorough read later.

Organisms and Soil Ecology

Again, with all due respect to Doc, there is ample evidence to demonstrate no-tills in production over years - not days, or weeks or months, but years - that have balanced organic matter and soil community and have been pest-free for years as well.

We are working with a highly mineralized soil. I mixed up both of these soils within the past week. I have been over elbow deep in both mixes and let me tell you, the LOS is the more mineralized soil between the two.

Take a moment to check out CO's latest photo of his grow.

CO, care to share with the crew how much effort went into getting them this far?

This is a provocative question, and I was hoping someone in the gallery, whether subbed or not, might have some insight to this. Quite frankly, I'm surprised one of you didn't jump on this one. I'm still too new to the field to know myself, but what immediately sprang to mind was the ability of the mushroom kingdom to remove toxicity from soils.

That might be an interesting train of thought for someone to chase for us.

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

I'm looking more closely at this photo, particularly the way the upper petioles are changing from red to green. If memory serves me right, this is a sign of increasing brix levels? Coupled with the obvious vigor and rich deep green and glowing leaves, I'd say we have evidence of the quality and potential of this soil recipe staring us right in the face.

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

:D I'm glad I asked a good one! That would be quite amazing if somehow it didn't matter and the worms/bacteria took care of the problem/gmo content somehow.

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

It wouldn't surprise me if worms could do that, but I haven't a clue myself.

A lot of learnin' going on here today. :laughtwo: Don't you love it?

They're releasing Dale later today. The nursing home is moving him to a better facility as soon as a room opens up, so still in limbo, just a different type. (Sigh)

The obvious plus - "better". More appropriate to his transitional needs. The one he's at is more of a nursing home. Halls lined with drooling, neglected and lonely souls. A few blocks closer to the hospital, if their gamble on the meds that aren't offering relief yet doesn't pan out. Opps, slipped into negative thinking there. We'll stick to believing "better" is based on reality and not on marketing hype or wishful thinking.

The nurse was laughing appreciatively at my teeshirt, which led to a lengthy discussion of the :420: community and the wave of legalization creeping across the country. It pays to represent. This is one of the reasons 420 hands out these shirts to contest winners.

Representing with honor.

I don't believe that you would have any problems with gmo or non-gmo foodstuffs, as the worms
and other living critters convert foodstuff into easily digestable nutrients for other critters and plant roots.

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

I don't believe Doc said LOS/no-till might have bug problems. He merely stated that HB soil doesn't. It is my understanding this is something the two soils have in common (among other things). They can both have bugs, but neither seem to allow them to get out of hand (hopefully). It is one of the things that is putting me on the HB and LOS bandwagon. :high-five:

...or maybe I completely misunderstood the point above. :laughtwo:

Daily Update: Dark Devil Auto - Day 20

I think she's got it!

image23135.jpg

The 80% humidity reading was because the meter is sitting directly on the surface. When I placed it against the side of the pot it fell to 65% within minutes and stabilized there with the curtain closed. Temps are steady at around 65-75 F at this point. Almost perfect conditions. Unbelievable.

Beginning to bulk up and the stem is turning that wonderful green that bespeaks health and vigor.

image23136.jpg

Interesting growth on the node there. Are we seeing signs of sex? I'm trying to keep better track this time.

image23137.jpg

image23138.jpg

With the room filled with natural sunlight one can almost imagine she's growing in the wild. :slide:

Quite a community growing in this tiny closet, eh? I'm looking forward to getting started on expansion. I'll be using the pot on the left for additional LOS plantings. No sense wasting a perfectly good community. I figure two tiers on it. What do you think DrZiggy?

image23140.jpg

One last shot, all pretty in pink.

image23141.jpg

The reservoirs took about 1 cup to top the empty pot (WTH??? think the plants living there. LOL!) and just over 2 for the Devil's pot. Of course she got a 1/4 turn. She's beginning to straighten up nicely.

That's all I have for today. Have a wonderful day everyone. Get out there into the springtime loveliness and spread some joy. :green_heart:

:Namaste:

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

It's not so much that you don't get pests in good organic soil - they just don't harm the plants. :cheesygrinsmiley:

I have a domestic population of whiteflies that have apparently adapted quite well to my high-sugar foliage. If I had other less healthy plants, they'd prefer them, but they like these just fine, too. The thing is, they just don't seem to affect the plants. It doesn't take them long to swarm any necrotic leaves, but the rest of the plants stay nice and healthy. High brix plants can have pests, but the plant's defenses keep them from getting a decent foothold.

But they poop on my plants and I'm sick of dealing with them, so I've been treating them with SNS products - study lil critters, though.

She's definitely taking off! Looking very happy in her little jungle.

My point exactly. A healthy soil will grow healthy plants. Pests for other mediums aren't the same concern in HB or LOS. We tend to eliminate them because they irritate us, not due to any damage to our robust plants.

Build a better soil. Grow healthier plants.

LIVING soil. It's not the particles of clay, sand, OM, etc that are alive. It's life forms, lots of them. If you want a living soil you must accept and work with the life forms it entails. I have zero pest issues btw. It's all good.

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

@ sue.
Sure I'll share something re: current grow. 2nd run in the no till pots like Sue uses, except mine are hard plastic 10 gal pots. Very minimal anything on my part other than adding water. I never thought of it until I heard you guys mentioning it a week or so ago. The green petioles toward the top of a plant that is genetically inclined to have colored ones, being a sign of high brix levels. I'm not too inclined to measure brix levels personally, but when I read high brix I translate it into "healthy". High brix kit plants like docs look really healthy and happy. My plants are indeed healthy and happy.
We have a major variance of amount of recommended OM between the kit and LOS.

Moving Dale sounds like progress, Sue. Good stuff!

Edit: if you like I could take better pictures of exactly that (green petioles toward the top of a red petioled plant) and also of trichomes on the fan leaves and petioles. That pic is ok but doesn't quite do it justice.

That is a spot of good news. I hope the new facility will you give at least a small measure of peace. I think you deserve some extra peace. Your girl is looking lovely and chipper today, too.
