Water: Mineral, pH'd to 6.5

Howdy do folks. Thank you for calling In

Today, I'm classing these as seedlings, as they have all lost their helmets and they have their cotlydon clolydeton colytidon colyedoms.
They all have their first baby leaves open and ready for some light..the sour diseasel is the most developed.

I was considering using the little seeding light I always use, as I thought that beast of a light from @Sylstar would be too aggressive. Well, I was wrong. The dimming function on it is extremely sensitive and accurate. You can control it 2 watts at a time and it can dim right down to 14 watts. So :thumb: @Sylstar, I'm really happy :cheesygrinsmiley:
After reading a few articles on exactly how much light a seedling needs I found it to be around 4000 lux at 12 to 24 inches away..
Well, this is where my new toy, the Lux"O"meter came in..
I have it set at roughly 2400 lux at the moment and it's running 19 watts
Screenshot_20210612-143813.jpeg

I will push the Lux and wattage up over the next few days to just below double of what it is now.. please jump in and correct me if I'm doing something wrong...
Anyway. I will see how much they stretch and I may up the juice on the light or bring the light closer.
I use my little humidity domes as a measuring gauge. They are marked at Day 6 at the moment but it should have been day 1.

I will get the vac out and hoover up the spilt soil on top of the seedling tray..
I'm proper heavy handed and keep knocking them over or dropping them.

Anyway. That's it for today. All advice would be greatly appreciated.
Take care everyone, I will catch up with all your journals tonight..

Thanks

Squiggz
@Squiggle Absolutely great start to the grow matey. :thumb:

I'm glad you've got the Lux meter sorted....Don't get me wrong, I have looked online & read about it, problem I'm having Is putting it into word's.
You know those late night's when you just can't get to sleep, the tv has finished showing anything worth watching & your there, watching Tele tubbies with the guy doing sign language to the bottom right ( maybe just me ) . I heard the opening tune & got this far with Mr Par's & Mr lux's garden adventure.......

Over the hill's & from afar,
Say hello to Mr Par,
& across the pond with all the duck's...
Look who's joined; It's Mr Lux........
:lot-o-toke:

Now I'm buggered :(

Right but how do we know which VPD is right for which plant when?
That my friend is a bloody good question!

I've taken the liberty to look into this & this what I think....

using VPD with multi strain grow's in the same tent won't work. The reason for this is yes, different plants will react differently to their environment. Say you have darker leaves & lighter leaves, the darker will respond differently to the lighter.
So in a nut shell, if you have 4 of the same plants in one tent the leaf temp should be the same. So adjusting your environment for those plants will work. If you have different strains growing in the same area, then VPD might not work as each plant will react differently.
Go to the beach, same weather yet some people can handle the heat & others can't... same with the bud.
Whatever the temp read out is for your particular strain, the VPD chart will tell you how to adjust things to make sure its transpiring as it should.

VPD Is a measure of transpiration ( losing moisture ) Transpiration is driven by vapour pressure. So the deficit is the difference between the pressure, the leaf & the environment. ( hold on a minute , I'm going nerdy ffs )

Basically, humidity is not a measure as its ' relative ', using VPD with the leaf temp will allow you to get the environment right where you need it to be for that plant.

I hope I've chucked that down in a way that's understandable.

One

Yeah, that's a fair point gdb, if he had more than one auto it would make a big difference. ..he has only got one auto hasn't he?....or has that turned into three also.
Squiggle??
I missed that! I thought he was growing several autos.

I take back what I said. I would certainly sacrifice a bit of the yield from 1 auto plant to get 3 photos flipped on schedule!
And, having 8 feet of vertical space is a plus to say the least. You can afford to veg your photos for an extended period.

Howdy do folks, hope all is well with you lot..

Not much to report, the seedlings have stretched and gone all spindley, so I've dropped the light to 13 inches and got the Lux up to 3800.

I've also got a tiny usb fan blowing gently on them, they are barely moving but I'm hoping it will stop them stretching and it will focus the growth on strengthening them up.

If all that fails, I may put a pot extension, a sort of collar, a few inches deep and top it up with compost, burying the stem.. what's your thoughts on that?

Anyway.. all thoughts, ideas and suggestions will be much appreciated.

Oh! @Grand Daddy Black . I'm wrong again. My tent is only 6 ft 6 not 8ft . I converted metric to Imperial wrong. So you are right ..

Thanks for stopping buy guys.
Looking forward to any input.

Take care,

Hey, Squiggle.

Those lanky girls present a challenge. I like your light adjustment. I'd also put a book or two under the shorter ones to try and keep all the tops equidistant from the light.

I will do just that. I'm on it. Thanks for the advice :thanks:

Sounds like a good plan. I always leave my first pots 2/3rd full due to the odd leggy seed.Since i grabbed a cheap 100wat purple light (42watt on a meter) i dont have many issues i get it pretty close in my seed/clones tent.
If all that fails, I may put a pot extension, a sort of collar, a few inches deep and top it up with compost, burying the stem.. what's your thoughts on that?

It might be my only option.. I've never had any stretch before, as I usually use my little purple starter light on them too, but I took a gamble trying to start them under the big light. Hopefully they won't get any worse. But if they do, I can either tie them to a stick to support them or put the collar on. Time will tell.
Thanks for popping in mate. Appreciate it.

Its a pleasure.

Ye i cant bring myself to do it even when i have had the free space.Scared of frying them putting a big light on my seeds guess at some point im going to have to and get used to managing the height of them for the results i want.

PS. might just be me but i always get better results from seedlings with a purple light Tried cfl's T5s and bulbs all round heat/money/results when in a dome or under a cup.

Peace to ya

Its not just you mate. I've never had any problems with a purple..
I should have just went straight for the 4000 lux at this height. But like you, I was scared of cooking them.. you live and learn i suppose.
Thanks again..

Never better squiggle cheers.
But Jeez mate.. had to leave the Ac unit off this afternoon, mrs going mad with the rocket powered hot air running out the loft..to be fair it has been a rather warm one;)
She said I had to get her one, sooo..up the stairs sharpish, bit of a sorry and a grimace to the girls, an I turned it off as quick as I could.
If I’ve gotta get myself a laser temp machine, there’s no way she’s getting an AC unit..;)
Anyway.. 35c up here, Rh is low though yey..
Seedlings popped yesterday, amazingly, still here.. didn’t think they’d cope.. resilient little beggars. ❤️
peace to ya

The Mrs always wins mate.. it's the law..
Do they cost much to run, those AC units?
Congrats on the seedlings by the way. Looking forward to their adventure...

Howdy do guys

A little bit of good news; the seedlings have stopped stretching . I measured them yesterday after I dropped the light and raised the Lux, and I've measured them today and they are within a few millimetres of yesterday.
It could also be the little fan that's wobbling them about. Hopefully that is strengthening them.
I've also raised the other two as suggested by @Grand Daddy Black
I've also put a splint on them to stop them flopping over..

Here's a few pictures

It's the only stiff things I could find:p

The blue berry that's attached to the brown willy, started to wilt abit, as I totally disturbed the soil around it sticking the willy in. The other one is fine..

Anyway.. hope all you are well. As always; don't be shy to throw ideas into the pot.. I need all the help I can get..

Catch you all soon and I thank you all for popping in

Take care
