Sponsored Grow: Krip Keepers Frost Fest Featuring Mars SP-250 In Mars 4' x 4' Tent

It'll be interesting to see what I hit first - the 4 z's or the ceiling! :hmmmm:

I must say you've done quite well on this grow from my junior perspective ... bonsai mothers ... transitioning to Brix ... transplanting ... new tent ... new lights ... lots of different environment variables to track ... doing tests on leaves ... three sponsors monitoring ...

This may seem straight forward to you ... but I would be overwhelmed ...

Great job ... and thanks for the educational and entertaining posts!!!

Mars Hydro is a great choice ... but why didn't you get the SP 250s? The spectrum is better and the coverage is more uniform ...
I have been looking at the SP250 but they had a Great sale on these and they say the COB lights get better penetration and still cover a 4x4 area with the 4 lights I ordered they were 2 for 1. I think I will have room for a smaller tent and I will probably get the SP 250 when I do get a smaller tent for seedlings and veg that way I can have some veging while the others are in flower. two of the SP250 would have been a little more then 4 of these were with the sale they are having. SmokeSara highly recommended them to me

That's a killer sale they have right now. I almost bought a pair of those cobs too!

Thanks ... I totally understand the whole penetration thing ... :)

I tend to grow my plants more flat and spread-out right now though ... rather than more straight up (except for the plants I choose to clone) ...

I think as I improve as a grower, I'll be more comfortable with taller plants and a more uneven canopy ...

Maybe @Mr. Krip will share some of his insight into grow light penetration and how light/heavy pruning of fan leaves can help our yields ...

LED's tend to have weaker penetration than HPS, MH, CMH, etc. and one of my sayings for years is "You don't grow trees with LED's". I've been saying that since LED's were being delivered with 1w chips. Now, the chips are 3w-10w and offer much better penetration into the canopy but still not comparable to HPS, IMHO. However, the plants tend to stay a little shorter and produce higher quality meds with the mixed spectrum of LED's.

I used to be a big fan of defoliation and would strip most of the fan leaves off at days #21 & #45 (or so) of flower to open up the bud sites to more light. I'd literally strip most everything at day #21 and by day #45, you couldn't tell it was defoliated.

However, with high brix, we do NOT defoliate since we count on those fan leaves for photosynthesis. These days, I trim the bottom third of the plant since it won't be exposed to any real light, and then just remove the dead stuff and a few select leaves that may be blocking a good bud site. If possible, I try to "tuck" the leaves instead of removing them.

Any light that's hitting the floor of the tent is light that's being wasted! :)

I hope that helps!

This really helps me to choose a growing style that suits me and also makes sense!

I read an article a few weeks ago ... and basically it discussed the benefits of light defoliation and the benefits of heavy defoliation ... gee thanks :)

So, ... I had two plants .... and I decided ... hey, I will do a heavy defoliation on one and a strategic light defoliation on the other.

Well ... when I was done with the heavy defoliation ... my hands were all sticky with resin and the plant looked so bare ... I then guessed this was probably not a good idea! :)

One good thing did come out of that though ... I decided I was going to be gentle with my expensive plants from now on! I was not going to just shove my hands in and tear away from the top ... breaking trichomes ... removing leaves with trichomes ... I was actually going to be gentle with the buds and try to "grow & preserve the trichomes" like a #TrichomeFarmer.

So basically TrichomeFarming with Fan Leaves as the plant factories is a new mantra for me.

Here's what gets me a bit ... it just seems so intuitive now ... but unfortunately, I am not a natural gardener ... I do not have a green thumb ... growing cannabis plants is very challenging for me still ...

So when you step-up and write just a few paragraphs like those above ... my life gets a whole lot easier :)

UPDATE & PIC DUMP

Sorry for the lack of updates this week but I've been working 20+ hour days since last Sunday and have had no time what-so-ever. I was planning on flipping Friday but had passed out and slept right through the flip, so I didn't get to flip until Saturday which was already really late to flip these girls.

I could be headed for some trouble with the stretch cuz' these girls are already about the size I've harvested a bunch of plants at and I can imagine how tall they gonna be in a few weeks! :nervous-guy:

Here's some group pics:

You can see the Blackwater (front/left) is looking fine, now, minus some of the older lower growth.

Here's a solo shot of the Blackwater:

This is the non-Vulxed Dolato:

Those two are the only ones I can get good pics of since the canopy is too thick to get good pics of the individual plants in the back and center, but, here's the monster Platinum Cake which I expect to be hitting the ceiling in a couple of weeks. The PCake is not only the best meds I've ever grown but, will now qualify as the biggest plant I've ever grown, too! :meatballs::

Here's the Vulxed Dolato, which, admittedly, I haven't been focusing on enough but is pretty much identical to the non-Vulxed Dolato. I haven't noticed a difference in watering needs yet and the canopy on her is slightly shorter than the other:

Not much else to report, for now, and I need to update the other journal and get back to work!

I'll get caught up on everyone's journals soon!

Happy Harvests!
