Skylining: My Guide To Cannabis Training Featuring Blue Gelato 41 & Pink Kush

I use the Dr. Bronners Hemp & Peppermint soap. It's awesome! The peppermint in there helps deter pests too. If you do go with unscented, experiment with various essential oils to make it better.

They don't have the peppermint one :( Here are my options;
-First one has a pure rich oil mix. Olive oil, potassium castorate, coconut oil, rosemary extract, cellulose gum, pogostemon cablin leaf oil and lavandula hybrida herb oil.
-Second option comes plain and with citronella.
-Last one is the lavander castille soap.

I got some update folks.

I've ordered that castille soap with rosemary and expecting it on next week. Thats a relief because I have neem and castille soap to fight with the thrips. If they fail, I will get spinosad as last resort. Manufacturer told me that they advise using spinosad once or twice every year. It is expensive and the smallest bottle has more than I need. That's why this one is the last resort but probably the most effective.

Another update is I've cleaned the main grow area with white soap and bleach. I've spotted several spiders and escorted them out :ciao: After the detailed cleaning, there was a different type of thrip crawling on the floor. I cought it with packing tape and took a picture while it was still alive :nerd-with-glasses: After the cleaning, I applied a very strong insecticide to the whole room, expecially the micro leaks on the window frames. I don't think there is any nasty stuff left in that room. Now, I am waiting for my antiseptic/antifungal solution to arrive and spraying this all over the grow tents and the main grow room will be the last step to complete sanitation.

I also fed my plants today. I wasn't feeding them because RH gets high in the other room and I will keep feeding them light until the antifungal solution arrives. I added GH Diamond Nectar(TA Fulvic) fulvic acids to the menu. I will keep using that until the end of the transition phase. Then I will only use AN Rhino Skin and Big Bud as flower supplements. I am planning to finish with GH Ripen again because I am happy with the result on my Dinafem Super Silver. That plant was only fed with Ripen for the last 14 days and it was already packing a lot of resin. After that I turned the lights off for 48h before the harvest. Now, being cured for almost ten days, I can't smoke these nugs without coughing. Has a very sharp citrus flavour on the smoke and gets you very high with an anxious sativa buzz. Not my first choice of smoke but Ripen did its part for sure :welldone:

Oh let me get that photo of the white thrip. Cheers :passitleft:

I've installed the tent in the main grow room. Everything is super sterile now and plants are happy without any leaf damage. I think this pest problem is solved with the Neem Azal but still I've sprayed them with the Castille soap. I used slightly more than half tablespoon for a quart. I will keep close eye for a little longer and then cut some clones from these plants. I am planning a SOG of BG41 and PK in my other tent. After taking clones, these babies will take off.

Here is how they look now. Cheers :passitleft:

Greetings to you fellow growers :welcome:

I have been planning to share this method for some time and finally I have enough free time to do so. There is nothing new or groundbreaking here but my personal approach to plant training. Any grower can come up with this idea and probably lots of other growers will train their plants by doing whatever is working for them best at the end of this journal. Let me explain how this works and why this is the best way to train cannabis in my condition :cough:

I have a very limited space to grow and I need to get the maximum yield out of my plants. I am trying to grow big indoor plants and this can be tricky if you got a small growing space like me. I call this method Skylining because the final structure of your plant looks like a city view full of tall buildings, in our case colas.

Lets talk about how I start. I want to stretch my plant in early veg. to begin with this method. I don't let lower parts grow until the plant reaches a certain height. At that point I top the plant and have two main nodes. One of my previous grows was a Gorilla Zkittlez and I trained this plant with this method in veg. Here is how a Skylined plant looks when it comes to topping phase;

Pretty stretched huh? Plant stretch faster when you trim all the sidebranches. I only leave the crown growing upwards. That means your plant needs to produce less plant tissue to achieve that height. In late veg. your plant will have a huge woody stem to support itself in everyway but until that phase, you might want to support your plant with a SCROG net or other stuff. After topping, I start filling the SCROG net and here is how that phase looks on my current grow with Purple Punch;

After filling the SCROG net, I let the sidebranches grow upwards. I didn't have much time with Purple Punch but I will trim everything except the strong sidebranches on this journal. High RH can cause molds and this kind of plants just hold too much water and keep the RH levels very high inside my grow tents. Proper air circulation is a must when you are Skylining and you need to achieve that by lots of trimming. Here is how my Purple Punch was in that phase;

After waiting for some vertical growth I flip the lights and start the blooming period. I still use veg. nutes to promote stretch and I apply Light Addict's Tip Spreading technique to stack nodes closer as the branches stretch. After observing first signs of blooming, I switch to bloom nutrients. Here is how my PP looked like in this phase;

Because I was too lazy to trim and properly train this plant, I had to do a trimming session last week. I don't usually trim my plants in 6th week of flowering as you guys can guess. I won't be doing the same mistake in this journal and achieve this kind of look without trimming my plant on mid and late bloom weeks;

These were the basics about Skylining. Now I will try to demonstrate this method using two of my baby plants. We got a Blue Gelato #41 and a Pink Kush, each in coco. They are under crappy LED's now but I will move them in 3x3 tents after harvesting my Super Silver and Purple Punch. You can visit that journal too and enjoy some nice harvest pictures in two weeks. Let me give some information about the setup for this journal;

I will be using three tents for this journal.

-Around 450W of Quantum Boards(3000K) in a 3x3 tent
-2x Viparspectra R300's + 100W crappy DIY COB LED module in a 3x3 tent
-Around 90W of crappy DIY COB LED module in a 2x2 tent for early veg.
-10gal. fabric pots with coco coir and perlite mix.
-General Hydroponics Flora Coco Grow and Bloom to be used with Mykos, Cannazym and some bloom boosters. I will probably go with AN Big Bud(not the coco version). I might finish with GH Ripen and Florakleen.
-Fans for air circulation and carbon filtering.
-SCROG nets.

Glad to hear that Bud :passitleft:

I will take clones in a few days because I've been busy with my LED board project lately so things are going a little bit slow here. After taking clones I will top these babies and start "Skylining".

I think I got rid of all of the pests. Still, I am planning to use Spinosad because a fellow master grower here advised me to do so just to make sure the clones are free from any eggs or thrips. I don't want to mess with thrips on a SOG grow :)

I'll be back in a few days with clones and possibly topping. I hope you guys are patient enough to see what will happen here.

Happy growing :blunt:

No update on the plants yet but I got some other news on my LED project. I've managed to get all the stuff and drilled a few holes today. I will complete the prototype tomorrow and start testing this puppy soon. I will share more as I keep building these boards. I will build ten boards first. These are for my close friends and some fellow master growers. If I can make these people happy I will distribute these to local hydro stores. No global plans yet but if I go that way, 420 magazine would be first to know because I feel enthusiastic about being a sponsor here. This just a small and local DIY project for now.

Board specs;
-240W Meanwell XLG drivers
-288 pcs. Samsung LM301H full spectrum LED's
-High quality optics
-Red boost to be added later;
-75W Osram drivers
-18 pcs. Osram OSLON 660nm deep red
-74cmx31cmx3cm
-Aluminum heatsink
-3M double sided adhesive tape

Board will draw around 310W because I decided to use two seperate drivers to improve performance. This increases the cost but imho. the true way to go. I also have Meanwell HLG and ELG series and these are better drivers than the XLG series but still XLG does a pretty good job. Only problem might be the lifespan eventhough I think the XLG can last 5+ years. And these reds will go pretty bright without overloading the XLG which would be a great plus.

I want to share some more info on the heatsink as well. This heatsink turned out to be very thick with a thickness of 3 cm. I will get a thinner version of the same plate for the other nine modules that I am planning to build next week. That will reduce the cost and weight. But I am planning to drive the LED's a little bit more powerful since I got this huge heatsink. That will be my first actual product test. If things go great, I might stick with the thick sink.

I will also add 730nm alongside with 660nm to test Emerson effect. That is a long term goal but who knows :blunt:

Here is how the project looks so far. I will share the process and the end product soon.

Cheers guys :passitleft:

Looks like an amazing board! Looking forward to watching the progress and improvements as you work your way through the prototypes. I hope when the day comes, I'll be ready to buy one to support a small business. I'm still learning a lot about lights in general. My first indoor grow will be starting soon so there's lot to learn. Working my way toward being a good grower myself!

Thanks for your nice words BA and you got a great garden too :passitleft: It's a good thing that I am constantly running into a lot of problems here for you to observe :laugh: I haven't had any major pest problem in the past but here we are. There is nothing hard doing a grow indoors if you keep everything sterile. You can expect huge yields and great stuff.

As I said I am not planning a global distribution for the near future. If I can establish a working business, I will apply for sponsorship on 420MAG. immediately because this is where I party man :party:

Learning never stops. Knowing your lights is essential when it comes to indoor growing. Spectrum, intensity, efficiency... there is a lot to think about. A lot of growers know what they are using but I am here to make things simplier for those who don't yet. This is the main reason for me to share the whole process.

Light source is the second biggest factor that determines the yield of an indoor grow. The key factor is genetics to be honest. To give a clear example, you can't beat any XXL strain with regular ones just by using some more light. These days, most of the LED growers are after full spectrum boards with red boost and mostly using 480W for a 3x3 standart tent. You can scale the amount if you go bigger or smaller. These will be enough for starters but I'm always here if you have any other questions.

Cheers :passitleft:

Hey guys, I got some update on everything. I took clones, wired the LED boards and ordered some more parts for more LED boards for my friends. I won't use this board myself but I will build my own soon. I will get this puppy ppfd tested this week.

Suprisingly, a fellow master grower visited me today and told me that he needs lights too. He brought 4 clones of Liberty Haze with him and we planted them together. I got these Liberty seeds from Amsterdam last december. He is nice enough to share some because he knows I love smoking Liberty Haze. As long as we were planting clones, I decided to cut two clones from Pink Kush and Blue Gelato 41 as well. I will use their top as clones so the clone lineup will result in 4 Liberty Haze, 3 Pink Kush and 3 BG41. I am waiting for two more small pots to take clones from their tops.

-Line up is like this;

BG41-------PK ------->Big pots to be skylined)

BG41---PK----LH----LH ----\Clones
BG41---PK----LH----LH ----/Clones

About the LED boards, I've wired and calibrated to make them ready for ppfd testing. I will apply double sided thermal tape and drill a few more holes this week. This board will be ready to rock this saturday. Check them out;

I am back with some more clones and update. I haven't seen any thrips for a long time but I have fungus gnats now. I think the hydro store isn't keeping the coco coir in good conditions because gnats came out after putting the new clones inside the tent. These won't be a problem because I used a spinosad based product to spray the whole place and waiting for the whole pest problem to dissapear.

I haven't taking clones for like seven years and since I have high humidity for for seasons here, I might go back to cloning to utilise the high RH. I will run a three strain SOG grow with 14 plants if all of these babies make it :nervous-guy:That will also be much fun. Here is the new line up with all the clones and skylining plants;

BG41--BG41-------Liberty-Liberty--------PK--PK
---------------BG41-Liberty-Liberty-----PK
BG41--BG41-------Liberty-Liberty-------PK--PK

I've just got my LED board assembled and want to share how it looks guys. Here is the process;

-Holes drilled and thermal conductive tape installed;

-Boards are placed gently and screwed;

-And boom;

I couldn't wait and installed that baby in my 3x3 tent;

I will top my plants soon but I want to check how my new lights are doing first.

Cheers :passitleft:

Cloning process is over but I am expecting guests next week so I will just keep my plants idle for a little longer. I don't want to seperate the SOG and Skylining plants because I can't hide two 3x3 in my apartment. I don't want my guests to discover my grow and that is only possible with a single 3x3.

I still might consider topping them because they are free from stress now and growing faster than ever for a couple of days even though I haven't been watering them for a week. Pot is nearly dry for a day but leaves show no sign of thirst. I think when you leave your rootzone barely wet, plants focus on building more roots than leaves or stems. We will see how these two take off after switching to frequent feeding. I am more focused on clones these days because I really want to grow a multistrain SOG with these.

I also borrowed a quantum PAR meter from the hydrostore to measure ppfd for my new LED board. Soon I will share footprint results with you guys. I think these lights are killing it.

I calibrated my boards with a multimeter but I think using maximum power produces too much heat eventhough I have this huge heatsink. Heatsink is properly cooling the board but the driver gets too hot at the maximum setting so I trimmed it down by two steps(since its a constant power driver, trim pot dims the light stepwise rather than linear) and problem is solved. I will check how much ppfd I lose by this trimming and switch to ELG drivers instead of XLG if the results are too low compared to the maximum setting.

Here is the dimmed and maximum power settings side by side;

Full Power;

Two step dimmed;

Pretty much brighter on the full setting. We will decide after measurements and try the ELG-240 if necessary.

Cheers :passitleft:

Lower ppfd is fine in veg, I ran mine at 350-400 ppfd

Agreed:passitleft: Actually what I have now is probably overkill for veg.

I am hoping to stack two of these boards for flowering. I want to test full spectrum only yield and quality. I will also compare these with red boosted and 3000K boards on a future journal. I am planning to start that grow on mid july and there will be a lot of fun and LED discussions there.
