Radogast's Non-420 Garden Creation Thread

I like the way Ranger put that. I agree.

I have much more respect for worms. Thank you so much for that Rad.

Since your talking about worms, I'm so excited... Last year I placed about 50-75lbs of mixed fruit from my trees that wasn't good or we couldn't use in a 6-8' hole. I completely forgot about it and when I went out there after the thaw, OMG, the fruit is all gone, the worm population is massive and I can see at least three different types of worms. It looks like I have some killer castings for my outside garden this year... :cheertwo:

Inside bin is doing awesome too!

Love me some worm poo! :)

If not here, where else would i quote 150 year old data on worms poo ?:rofl::rofl:

Awesome outcome with your fruit pit !

This could be an awesome way to prepare hidden plots outdoors. With some forethought, maybe get some additives in there too. Man, do I wish I could tend an outdoor cannabis garden. Planted right into that extended community in rich soil. Think of the connections in the mycorrhizae alone. Free-range worms. Bugs. Birds. Actual sun. Wow!

I get really carried away sometimes, don't I? A life-long trait I'm not sure I care to change. :laughtwo::green_heart:

You know Rad, I'm reading Darwin on worms again and thinking how it reads like music to me. The sweet strains of a long-forgotten song. I get lost in there.

Thank you for this.

Going back in.

Wow, 150 years and still on point! :) Thanks Radogast, I'm excited to see what it can do. Going 100% heirloom this year!

SweetSue, I would love to grow outdoors, never have. I can imagine the monsters though. You are definitely passionate Sue. :)

I tried some heirlooms last year, the soil wasn't ready yet.

Early Spring (a little late this year)

A nearly blank canvas with pathways "blocked in"

The birdfeeders are moved back to the far edge of the deck.
Rubber boots are ready to wear.

A gray squirrel is jumping on the log at the front edge of the graveyard.
Yesterday, my wife saw five garter snakes in the graveyard.
As I typed this, a pair of Goshawks flew near the treehouse.

When you look close, hyacinth, tulip, daffodil and crocus bulbs planted last fall are emerging from the ground.

I like the effect of small crocus planted just inside the rock path borders

A few hundred more bulbs should be sprouting soon. !!!:thumb:
They started near the house and are gradually spreading back into the meadow.

Thank you for that breath of Spring Rad, and for sharing your home's upcoming explosion of color, line and texture. Letting us share in the wildlife is a particularly nice touch. Quite satisfying to step out there and survey, isn't it? Planning the next move.

Large bird drama today!

Goshawk pair roosting.
other hawk fly-bys,

a Scold of Jays,
a Murder of Crows, and
an Unkindness of Ravens!!

Small birds are in hiding, as are the squirrels and snakes.

Saw my first muskrat swimming down the brook today :)

The Tail of My First HugelKultur Bed

Last night, I purchased a come-along and dragged as log. (Evening low light pictures)

This morning, I burried a log . A pretty, heart-shaped log :green_heart:

Some times a branch needs trimming for a tight fit

Logs, stuffed with dirt, then branches, upside down sod, and more dirt.

The perlite and clover come from indoor plants that didn't make it.
Besides, I needed 3 gallon buckets.

This is only the beginning (starting at the tail) of a serpent shaped HugelKultur bed protecting my house from dragons and bad neighbors. If completed per design, it will be embedded in a labyrinthine simple maze of HugelKultur beds. It might take a while, but that was one of the heaviest logs.

All right Rad! WooHoo! What are you planning to grow on it? Any immediate plans? I suspect it will be the first of many. Man, if we lived in the same town I'd so be there with shovel and gloves.

I'm sure you would ! I've got lots more to do.

Once I get a good rain. And we officially reach planting season. (Was thinking on that Crow 3 sisters methods shared by Mr. Espalier... plant when the oak leaves are the size of a squirrels ear. We have maple leaves that size, but as of yesterday, no oak leaves.)

Flowers and vegetables, probably from greenhouses, roses, herbs, sunflowers? A wild mix planted in a line.

The HugelKultur berms are the planting beds, but they are also path borders like the rocks out back. :)

You'll sleep good tonight, nice work. I talked to my tree guy today and this week he'll be taking down another large oak,, I think I'll try one of those with a log,,, unless I find something. What are you planting in that huge thing a muh watsee?

Awesome hugelkultur bed, Radogast! Serpent Guardian protects, heals and nourishes the clan.
What are the dimensions? Beds I did in southern-IL were 4x40x4'. This was pretty close to Holzer and other examples I'd seen.
Did I see some dancing bears? What a long strange road it's been.
Right on

I wasn't planning a serpent, but we just had a damballa ceremonial painting with veve (made oil and ceremonial sand) show up in the house. I didn't see the new shape of my plan until I finished work today and looked from above.

I was aiming for knee high today but only made it boot high. Today section is 8' long, 6 inches rising to 14", and about 24" at the base rising top 12" at summit.

The full length of this shape will be around 70' with two breaks for path crossings. I hope to reach 3'.
