Radogast's Hi-Brix Basement Grow - New Location - New Soil - New Experiences

I would imagine that many/all county extension offices receive at least part of their funding from Federal sources. All testing services might come to a halt for funding reasons without that Federal aid. So.... I can certainly see why any given county extension office would steer clear of any connections to the Canna industry.

Dunno that the this is actually the case, but I would certainly think that some funding for these county services is derived from the FDA or other Fed agency.

Follow the money baby... follow the money.

Love those lil stands those would be great for hempy growing great job rad getting the grow station back under reign

Upstairs in my wife's office, a sensitive plant we've had for about a month showed spider mites - bad enough to kill 5 of 7 fronds.

I put the infested sensitive plant outside in the cold.
I rinsed the pencil cactus beside the infested plant under running water then sprayed with 2% neem oil/soap mix.

I washed myself and waited 2 hours, then neem sprayed the veg area. I realized the leaves were soaked, so turned off the lights for an hour to avoid leaf burn.
I plan to 2% neem spray the flower area at lights out.

Thank you - 6 stands for $4 at auction. I used 2 of them outside (1 short and 1 tall), and 1 in the veg area next to my chair for a watering station.

When I was bottom soaking 1 gallon soil pots, I used a short one (less tippy.)

Today, (in the middle of these photos,) I switched to a taller stand so the bucket could fit underneath.
It only took me a month to realize I needed to use a taller stand !

The hempy plants are looking good rad! Should I be doing my kit foliars at lights out or right before lights out? I've been doing them not long after lights on, I'm spraying the bottoms of the leafs but inevitably get some on top too.

Have a Rockin Eve Rad!

You should do them right at lights on or right before if you can. The pores on the bottom of the leaves are open then and thus absorb the foliars better. (There is a name for the pores I just cant think of it right now, doh!)

The way I understand it, the pores (stoma) are open enough for most of the day/night that it really doesn't matter as far as absorption goes.

The reason I was concerned about the lights and the moisture is because I applied 32 oz of neem spray on the tops and bottoms of leaves and branches - that is dripping wet. That is about 10 times the amount I use when doing a Brix foliar spray.

3 oz spread around the room will dry in 3 minutes or so, so I don't worry about light burn. 32 oz takes about 30 minutes to evaporate at 50% humidity, which mean 1/2 hour of water droplets acting like little prism that magnify light and burn the plant.

- - - Bottom line - - -

I apply Brix foliar at whatever time of day is convenient.

p.s. I'd have to check, but I believe the pores do a Oxygen to CO2 exchange at night as they purge the cells and a CO2 to oxygen exchange during the light because of a byproduct of photosynthesis. The uptake of minerals is independant of the day/night cycle EXCEPT the leaves have more energy to uptake minerals during the daylight because they are energetic and 'awake' due to the photosynthesis.

I had a couple of hours to kill, and I just read your journal from start to finish, good stuff Radogast!
Thanks for your efforts, appreciated.

Peace
Keith

hmmm .... reading from start to finish...

I was just thinking of people who are into strange fetishes and self punishment as I came to check this thread - - so I won't berate you for taking an hour to read this thread - - I hope you enjoyed the pain. :)

I actually think we are at an interesting place in the grow. The protective qualities of Doc Bud Hi-Brix soil and mild nutes are being left behind and perlite and osmocote plants are about to go into flower.

If I experience deficiencies, I don't have 'normal' bottle fertilizers and supplements on hand. As mild as it is, hempy is a semi-hydroponic way of growing.
If things go wrong, it could happen very fast

I feel like I'm hiking in a kilt on a windy day :)

Thanks Keith.

I did enjoy it all, especially the Nawlins parts and pieces. Evelyn Wood speed reading helped :-)

Asobuetly lvoed the wrod paly

I too lived and owned several old houses around town, and know the good and bad they can entail. I once worked for a residential contractor in the Vieux Carré, providing lots of access to the guts of historical buildings. Good stuff ... Lots of stories in me from NOLA years, but I'll stop hijacking your thread.

Perlite grows are so very forgiving, but I can never abandon soil completely! Right now I have eight 5 gallon hempies with bubblers flowering, the Christmas yield will be awesome!

Peace
Keith

You'll appreciate this KK... One of the old buildings in the Vieux Carre' (French Quarter for you tourist types) actually collapsed during a repair round.... on Dauphine about 3 blocks from Esplanade. They replaced it with NEW CONSTRUCTION.... IN THE VIEUX CARRE'!!! Never seen such insanity before. They actually did a great job... it's hard to pick out from all the others.

I'm assuming they reused the exterior decorative ironwork.

We were in a 1870s brick triangular warehouse building earlier this week. It has most recently been a kitchen machinery graveyard. Working elevator not inspected in 40 years but was sent between floors unattended with heavy kitchen equipment. For sale cheap!

The reason I mention is that it had the original tin ceilings and several thick metal barn type sliding doors.
