Radogast 2 - Return of the Clones

hmmm in washington it is 15 plants but going down to 6 after next July

Yeah, I notice how Washington went from 15 down to 6 based on rules by the state IN DIRECT CONFLICT with the statute on recreational marijuana approved by the voters. If you disapprove, you might consider gathering the names of those responsible since some of them may be up for reelection in 2016.

I have 17 plants right now in different stages, plus stems in the daisy cloner. Yesterday, I saw roots on 5 of 7 cloned stems, enough to keep 3 plants strains alive. Those that didn't make it are from breeder seed 'Janice' that went into the flower room directly after cloning. I took another clone of Janice tonight. I aim to keep one clone of each plant in veg at all times. I'll be dropping some of the clones of similar genetics as I expand strains. Sometime this winter, I am hoping to add a high CBD strain and possibly a pure sativa.

Janice, the other breeder seed, and a snocap went into the flowering room last week. All three showing emerging pistils, but aren't totally confirmed as girls yet. (The pistils are short and not yet forming either clusters or balls.) I think it is either 3 boys or 3 girls - it's hard to tell when they are so young :)

Flower room update

White Widow Bellatrix: A few days from harvest. Considering how wispy she was 9 weeks ago, this is a decent yield.

Hawaiian Skunk Hani: A month from harvest. She has gone yellow halfway through flower. Her mother stayed a deep dark green.
Both were water only, so I have to consider the reused soil is becoming depleted, or the mycorrhizal transport is inadequate.

3 girls after a week in the flower room

Janice (in the back)is beginning to throw pistils. Two days ago, all 3 girls looked like this.

Lachesis is making her pistils form buds

Lachesis is also stretching

Snocap Snow Queen has the best stretch of the 3 new girls.

Sweet Rad. They look so nice in the golden light of your bloom room. I'm watching my first stretch with Carnival and my Afghanis, and it's sooo cool to see. :laughtwo:

I always have a moment about a month out from harvest with every plant where I think it won't get dense or frosty enough, and then the harvest turns out to be stellar. So impatient!!

One thing growin teaches us all is how to be patient. Hey rado the plants all look great, just wondering on the Lachesis photo is that the light playing tricks or did that plant have spidy mite problem?

The Veg Room had spidey mite problems, that spread to the Flower Room. The mites were suppressed, then I went on vacation and returned to mites in the Flower Room, wihch then spilled over into the veg room.

I'm pretty sure the mites came in on Snow Queen, an outside clone.

I first sprayed with (420 sponsor) Sierra Natural Sciences SNS217 (good stuff) followed with home mixed 1% neem oil.

I haven't seen mites for about 2 weeks. I spray on even days.

Today was a day to pot up clones. I chose one from each girl that was ready.

In the cloner

These hydro roots and clones from the splashing daisy cloner look better than my previous clones in damp rockwool cubes.

This Hani clone was taken after her mother was weeks in flower. She has continued to put on bud and trichomes in the cloner (under 16/8 light)

They look great. The White Widow looks like sativas do in my grow room. The indicas like mysetup better. That Widow is about done, she has enough leaves to get her done. The others look indica and more healthy! Good stuff!

I have killed mites with a neem solution before. I spray the bottom of leaves (in veg) every few days for 2-3 times and they are gone. I would not use neem or any other treatments on plants that are in late flower. If you have mites late in flower just leave them and hang the plants up-side down for a couple days after chopping and they will all climb the plant and jump off. Just be sure to have something to kill them where they jump to.

I don't actually spray the neem on plants during the last 2 weeks before harvest, I spray others in the flower room. I also make sure to wash those buds after harvest.

I am willing to spray SNS217/rosemary up to harvest. Rosemary is literally edible. I don't know of it's smoking toxicity. Sierra Natural Sciences says it is safe to use until harvest.

Neem is safe to have in your mouth (I know people who have used Neem sticks as toothbrushes for decades.) Again I don't know of it's smoking toxicity.

Very cool, Radogast. I really like how you document what you are doing, in your pictures specifically. :goodjob:

Impressive rooting on the clones Rad. Looks like cloning will become more rewarding.

I like putting my methods and photos out there so people can tell me "Hey dude, why are you doing it the stupid way?"

Some of the poor choices I make are based on stubbornness or circumstances. Others are just ignorance :)

I don't keep good notes, but I think the root growth takes about the same length of time.

The big difference is leaves are staying much healthier in the daisy cloner. I suspect this is because the water is cleaner, and the leaves and roots are getting a larger quantity of fresher air - less root rot, healthier leaves.

I'm going to try taking larger clones when donor branches are available :)

As I was rehanging my trimming light, I thought of your euphemism "golden light" and decided to take a couple of CFL pictures.
Note the "yellow" leaves of Snow Queen to the left of the light.

Snocap Snow Queen: Looking very sativa-ish after a few days under 11/13.
Note the "yellow" leaves are more a lime green

Lachesis: A few days under 11/13. The bites of spider mites speckle the leaves

I brought White Widow Bellatrix C2 out into the hallway for her pre-harvest photo shoot.

As with her mother and grandmother, there is no meaningful amount of trim.

20151009_130959-1.jpg

At 180 days old, she spent too much time root bound in a small pot to veg and root properly.

20151009_131010-1.jpg

I let her slouch while flowering. Hanging 38" above the soil line, her top cola reaches 47" when held upright.

20151009_131129-1-1.jpg

I believe the slouch helped mid-tier buds like this one mature as fast as the top-tier buds.

20151009_124609-1.jpg

Looking closer to detect trichomes

20151009_124719-1.jpg

Trichomes are mostly clear, but they are also shriveling, which I take as a sign they are converting THC. It's time to harvest.

Congratulations on your impending harvest! I love the darker dots of buds all over that plant.

I had a few mnutes to spare so I chopped, washed and hung Bellatrix. If the trimming fairies don't do their magic by Sunday, I'll sit down and trim.

I thought I'd show you my one man bud washing technique. All photos taken at the end of washing.

A semi-circle of 5 gallon buckets around a swivelling stool.
From left to right:
Branches bucket - branches are hung by their hanging hooks on the side of a bucket. If the branch is too long to hang on the bucket, it won't wash well.
Wash bucket - 1 cup baking soda, 1 cup lemon juice in tap water (hot out of the faucet,)
First rinse bucket - cool tap water
Second rinse bucket - cool tap water

20151009_153810.jpg

I take a handful of branches in each hand and fan them to fit within the water buckets (These happen to be extra short branches at the end.)

20151009_152906-1.jpg

Using both hands I go from bucket to bucket dunking each handful 30 times (1-2345, 2-2345 ... 6-2345) lifting to (partial) drain on each 5.

20151009_153420-1.jpg

I didn't notice my drip dry cords were removed until I was standing with two handfuls of dripping buds, so I hung them on an (outdoor rated) power cord.

20151009_153827.jpg

This and the other photo total 6 handfuls of branches. Total washing and hanging time 15 minutes.
