Re: Queen's Sophmore Grow F - Lemon Skunk - Big Bang - Along With Some Bag Seed Sprou
Say Queenie,
I don't think my last post was entirely accurate.
Although a clone is identical to its mother and is therefore a female by default, if the mother has been stressed and turned hermie, and a clone is taken afterwards, the clone could turn out to be a hermie, too.
If the cutting has any of the male characteristics, e.g., pollen sacs, then the clone is already a hermie. If the cutting has no male characteristics, it could stay female or turn into a hermie.
A hermie is caused either by stress (light entering a flowering room during the dark period) or by genetics. Some strains produce a certain amount of hermies, self-pollinated plants have more hermies.
In order for a female to turn male, some plant hormone has to be activated. When this happens, a female plant with female DNA will be induced to produce pollen sacs in an attempt to reproduce (the plant's sole function really.)
If this hormone is in the cutting used to make a clone, the clone could turn out to be a hermie, like its mother. I'm no botanist, so this is just speculation, but it makes sense. Anybody out there know for certain if this is right?
Anyway, you said you took the clones before CannaVanna turned hermie, so hopefully they will be female. If the sex-change hormone was already there, the clones could turn hermie. It's also possible that CannaVanna is genetically disposed toward hermaphroditism, in which case her clones would also have that tendency.
Just keep an eye on the clones and make sure they don't turn hermie, too. You should make sure that they don't get stressed, i.e., lots of light, regular exercise. Make sure they brush between meals, too.
