Hello everybody! I have started a grow journal for my first ever CFL grow and Peyton kindly pointed me over to this thread for more help.
Here is the link to my grow journal which hasn't really started yet as I am waiting for the seeds. I have everything else but the nutes because I was hoping to get advice on what to use.
Small CFL First Grow!
I have myself a little grow box I bought from ebay and am waiting on the seeds to arrive. Here is my little set up.
The thing came with Peat Pellets but it seems to me that I mostly see people using rockwool for this kind of thing. Should I get rockwool instead? It seems like I see people using Peat Pellets mostly for cloning.
The other thing that makes me nervous is when to start adding nutes to the rez. Peyton says when I see jagged leaves to wait about two weeks and then add nutes. Sounds easy enough.
The folks on the other thread suggested I grow only one plant because of the limited lighting so I guess my goal will be to top the plant to get it nice and bushy?
Any more advice would be greatly appreciated of course.
Welcome! If advice u want. I love helping people getting started growing. Everything past the basics is open to opinion. After saying that, here goes my opinion along with questions following up. Get a note pad, shits about to get real.
Let's start with possible issues I see right off the bat.
1. Get that god damn tinfoil out of there lol it will create hot spots. Unless that's mylar (emergency blanket).
2. Cover that rez, any light getting into that tub will create alge and kill the plants.
3. Get the cardboard boxes out, that's a fire hazard.
OK now onto questions.
1.have you tested you max temperature in your cabinet with lights on? If not leave the lights on for 6 hours and take a temperature reading. Ideal u want under 80f. Perfect temp is low 70s.
2. What size is that tub? And what size air pump and air stone combination will u be using?
3. What size fans do you have to exhaust hot air?
Onto some info on dwc.
To be successful I strongly recommend you purchase a TDs or ec meeter to monitor your dissolved solids. Also a type of pH measurement. Can buy pH pens or you can buy liquid pH test kits. You will need a way to monitor your pH and keep it between 5.5 and 6.
Temperature of the solution (nutrient mix) needs to be kept under 70f or 21c. If lights on cause the temps to raise too much you can combat this with frozen bottles of water changed out every 4-6 hours. Is why you see some people with chilers setup on there dwc systems, or opt out and go rdwc. (Recirculating deep water culture)
Cloning and seed starting, everyone has different preferences. I like rockwool cubes and rooting powder. Some have success with peate, water cloning the list goes on. Few things to keep in check during cloning, is rh and temperature. 80/80 works for me, no dome nothing else.
For starting seeds I do prefer peat pellets though, haven't had good luck with rock wool and seeds.
Amount of plants, what are the measurements of that cab? Rule of thumb is when you switch the plant to flower, it will minimum stretch 2x-3x its size. So plan accordingly.
Don't let any of this scare you, its all quotes simple. Just take it in slowly. I do recommend you try a different growing style then dwc form first grow. Hempy is a great way to learn about growing cannabis. And you don't need to worry about temps as much. Room temp can sit in the 80s and not cause issues for root temp. Soil is also another great option for beginners.
Nutrients, ok you can get scared now lol just kidding hahah good line to start with is general hydroponics flora 3 part series. It can be used as 3 part formula or 2 part called the Lucas formula(Google it, so friggin simple it ain't funny). Start with half strength on whatever line u decide on.
and the wife needs me, I'll post more info later and feel free to ask any questions, we love helping, you came to the right place!
Also I don't subscribe anymore, too time consuming for me. So don't take offence if I'm not active in your thread. But your more then welcome to come here and ask.
