Pete Detroit's First Grow, Indoor, Dirt, Multi Strain: Round Two

Different Camera, flash only fired on the Purple Juice, will try w/o the lamp on, next time. DOES appear to lock the focus better... Must say, Zilla (2) is starting to take the eff OFF!!

Hi Pete!

Looks like you got some weeds growin'.
Indeed, I do! once I figured out how not to drown 'em, They seem to be liking it. Not sure if I'm gonna get new manure / worm casts, and rebuild the dirt, or just go with some slow release organic ferts. That'll be a lot easier, but prolly more $$$ Whatever, don't have to worry for a few months, anyway...

Thought the ladies might be thirsty, they were not - soil still nice and moist, Prolly want a drink tomorrow when the new light comes. They're DEFINATELY wanting more better stronger light. I think this guy was fine for sprouting, but they're really being stretchy, and growing to the side. Also time to get some plant hoops / staples, start training the un-topped two - bend 'em horizontal, and wrap 'em around the bucket, to maximize the exposure. Kind of winging it on that score, we'll see how it works out.

What nutrients will you use?
I’m currently growing in soil - Fox Farms Ocean Forest mixed with Happy Frog. Using FF Trio liquid.
I’ve been eyeballing GeoFlora for next grow. Easy peasy.

No added nutes yet, may / not need something for bloom beyond re-dosing w/ bone meal. The photo is likely to need some additional ferts due to extended veg stage (will see if I can hold her for two cycles of autos) Read a review yesterday for GeoFlora - there's a LOT to love there, amend the soil if you can, but just top dress, new 'bugs' in every dose, so you can water w/ Tap. Not REAL thrilled about the price, but agreed, sure looks easy!

I have no experience with autos so you may want to check out a few other grow journals to find a similar situation for pointers. Lots of good people here willing to help out.

Sure ARE!!! I admit I like the concept, just keep the lights on, balls to the wall, until they're done. However, can't clone 'em, so gotta get new seeds every time. Just getting back into the game after so long, it's my first trip w/ them too. Almost hoping to get a male, to breed 'em..

I was thinking the same. But then I thought better to get a couple of successful grows under my belt, then move to level two.

OK, new light, Mars Hydro TSL 2000. Ordered from their site, there were lower prices out there, but Mars did't charge extra for shipping or Tax. Pretty quick shipping, ordered it on Sun night, and here it is, installed on Friday. Not too shabby. Any way, it's up, running, buckets arranged more diagonally to better use the light (shaped like a standard fluorescent fixture) I think thermally the ladies could take it closer (like 8-12 in above) but you need more height for proper coverage. All got watered w/ ~250ml of condensate right down the core to promote tap root growth. And now, the pix. Gotta say, liking this camera better...

The Mars light will do wonders. I currently use tsw2000. Personally I have seen signs of burn at 15in, I currently have it about 80% finishing flowering on gsc auto
Yeah, checked in on 'em a bit ago, they already seem to be getting wider, and flatter, making a true canopy. Thanks for the tip on burn / height, will watch for that. Figure I'll run at 50% until we get to flower, ramp it up then. Good news, three prong timers less than $10! Will post more pix in a day or two..

No updates, on Mon I noticed the light was 1/2 inactive. Reversed the connection to dimmer / drivers, and the other 1/2 came back up Wrote to MARS support Mon night, they wrote back requesting video / pics. which I just sent. Don't want to be cranky w/o giving them he opportunity to replace the parts, but GRUMP!!!

Your in good hands, or at least I've heard. Sorry about the speed bump. I Always worry about that. I don't have a backup. But that tells me after it's fixed, and your done with your harvest. You upgrade, and use that one for emergency situations.

Yes, MATS Hydro are stand up. In this case, they will be shipping me a new dimmer / driver set. In a couple of days. Hopefully, it ships from NJ like the light did, and not on a slow boat from China. Sometimes the cost of lower price is convenience... Be that as it may, I repacked the girls into a square config under the lit end, and running it at about 75% and 24 hours (Mainly as I've been too distracted to get a timer yet.. Meanwhile, the 3 autos are really starting to kick into gear. they're all still a bit stretchy (partly due to a mis spent youth, as well as currant issues) they're all taller than the edge of their buckets, and about as wide across as the buckets. I think all 3 are about ready for some LST - I think they're too tall to take landscape staples effectively, will be using string through holes in the bucket rim, likely with an open paperclip as a 'hook to hold 'em. will look around, see what I have to hand. The photoperiod Gold Leaf is definitely lagging behind, which is fine, as I plan to keep her in Veg for two trips of autos, so PLENTY time to get beat up and recover more... Just went back and checked dates, seedlings sprouted on Jul 10/11, so basically a month old.
And now, the pix...

Looking good Pete!
Glad Mars is taking care of you.
Mee, Too! Nice to know their rep is deserved. Still, kinda wishng I could take it to a local B&M and give it back, "effit gimmee a new one" Thanks for kids words, we'll see how it turns out... (The Grow -and the next one, and the next...)
Side Effect of 'light draw' and bucket rotation to compensate, is good thick stems (and good transport...)

Ok, Time for some LST, prolly a week late, actually. Found some "hookup wire" I had picked up a while ago from Radio Shack, of all places, for some project or other. Unopened. Basically 20ga solid wire, insulated. I used the red, for contrast. Mostly took before and after shots. Drilled holes in the buckets every 2-3 inches around the rim to give LOTS of tie down points, may need to take Jucy and Zilla(2) around the rim, we'll see. Using the wire, I made a hook end (Like a shepherd's crook), and ran that around the trunk. The other end went through a hole and got bent up over the lip. Seems strong enough to secure the pieces, but if the girl objects too much she should be able to pull free. Based on what I'd read up on, I used two ties / plant, one to support the stem, so as not to stress/crimp the root / stem junction; the other to actually tie the girl down. It had been about 3 days since last watering to improve their flexibility. Will see if I can post the pix, and add text below them. They all got a good drink, pretty much the last of the condensate. Either the basement's staying dry so the du-hume is not getting as much, or it's leaking out - sure don't seem to have much going into the collection bucket..

Juicy, no before shot, you can easily see the wire ties. She had already gotten a bit bendy chasing the light, which has been on for 24 / day since losing 1/2. Hopefully the replacement power supply comes soon. Anyway, hopefully she'll roll over / turn up to chase it again. Not sure the lower nodes will amount to anything but larf, but they'll have a chance!

Goldy, showing what a proper topping looks like. Funny, She was the one taking OFF as a sprout, is much the shortest of the group. Not tall enough (yet) to reach the lip / use the holes, so I just drove the end of the hooks into the soil. You can clearly see the two separate tops, and the lower nodes are branching well, and will get better light now too. The stump of the original stem is just to the right of the left side hook. At some point in the next week, I'll top 'em again, and get the lower nodes too.

Zilla(1) - Pretty sure she got Fimmed. One of the leaves is missing about 1/2 the ends, seems to have just one central stem, still. 2nd shot shows highly developed branching on lower nodes. This is being VERY interesting, to compare to her sister.

Zilla(2) - TALL (a bit stretchy, missing the extra light. Starting to show pre-flowers / proto-buds, which I guess at nominally 5 weeks is about right. Seeing that, Picked up some Vigaro Bloom ferts, 15 -30 - 15, top dressed the 3 autos w/ that, 'should' take them to completion w/o and additional ferts, as they're showing NO sign of deficiency, looks like the soil / manure / worm casts was a good call, for starters! 2nd shot gives a good idea of how tall she is (well, LONG, now...) the the difference in the lower nodes from her sister is dramatic. Again, not sure those guys will ever do anything, but hey, they'll get a shot, now.

Was supposed to be a group pic, but apparently I only bothered to include Zilla(1) again. You can see how much shorter she was than her sister, but appears to be pre-flowering on all the lower nodes. The main stem is toward the top left, you can see the red "hook"
