Pennywise Does SOG Pheno Hunts Fall 2018

There are many people who believe this, and, while it is true for some types of plants, it's simply NOT true for MMJ. Here are a couple of quotes I posted recently when engaged in a similar discussion

:Namaste:

"One way in which plants are categorized is by the way they gather and handle carbon dioxide. Cannabis is a C3 plant. It uses the CO2 it gathers during the light period, when it is photosynthesizing. Plants designated C4 also gather CO2 during the dark period for use during the light period. Many C3 plants, including cannabis, do not need a rest period. They continue to photosynthesize as long as they are receiving light.

The plant's photosynthetic rate determines its growth rate because the sugars are used by the plant to build tissue and for energy. Cannabis under continuous light will grow 33% faster than the same plants on an 18-6 light regime." - Ed Rosenthal
"Cannabis is a light demanding plant. Professional growers keep the light on their plants using the 24/0 photoperiod for this reason. Plants that grow under 24/0 flourish and do not need a quantity of darkness in order to rest and perform photosynthesis properly. Plants that are grown in optimal conditions under 24/0 light regime grow vigorusly and the benefits of a 24/0 photoperiod can be seen actively in the results. More nodes are formed, more branches are created, leaf numbers increase, the plant is growing at its finest." - Greg Green

...You getting kick backs from the power companys!?...;)...interesting...I vegged 24/7 when I started, but wasn't really concerned about power usage, cause my lighting was way below recommended levels(and types) and it seemed a lot of peeps were doing it...fast forward a bit...my lighting was improved, but I was worried about cost and red flags, so I went to 18/6...yield was better, but so was lighting and growing knowledge...last couple runs, I've gone with 16/8, again with some personal bests for yield...however...my climate can be unforgiving, when Ya run plants well into October, and may have to run heat to maintain environment...so. it may be worth rethinking...while 33% increase may not be achievable in makeshift home grows, there might be enuff', that makes it worth while...food for thought...thanks Krip...:thumb::high-five:...cheerz...h00k...

On my 2nd grow I’m doing the 6/2 for my veg light cycle. So 3 times a day I get 6 hours of light and 2 hours off. Thank god for that because of the cold weather we got. Noticed I’m watering more often but the cold air really kills the Rh and had to get a humidifier because of it. Thankfully my room temp stays in the mid 70’s range when lights on, and mid high 60’s for the dark period

I've read about 6-2 but never tried it. I would think it would be fine for relatively short veg periods (i.e. preparing seedlings or clones for flowering) but I would be careful about using it for longer veg periods (i.e. maintaining mothers).

I did used to veg under the "Gas Lantern Routine" (GLR) which is basically 12/12 for veg EXCEPT you interrupt the dark cycle with one hour of light, so it's: 12 hours light, 5.5 dark, 1 light, 5.5 dark.

I found the plants grew great under GLR and seemed to flower much quicker when I transitioned them to 12/12. But, I had a couple of mother plants actually start to flower while under the GLR veg schedule. I would imagine the risk would be even greater with 6-2, but maybe not? :hmmmm:

Actually, you bring up a great point, Brother! :thumb:

(No...it's not my getting kickbacks from the power company!)

There is some science that suggests MMJ CAN reach a "saturation point" if it gets too much high intensity light during the day, in which case it can cause stress to the plants and a dark period is beneficial. The reality is that you don't need high intensity lights to veg and I've always vegged under low cost T-5 or LED type lights so costs of electric was low and I could never reach that alleged "saturation point".

If you're planning on vegging under a 1kw HPS, yeah, I'd give a dark period to avoid stress and lower electric costs. BUT, before I did that, I'd re-consider whether or not I really needed a kw HPS just to veg! ;)

going to cherp in there.. See how I did that @dr.h00k... BTW I was proud of that????

But i truely think a plant will do better and be all she can be,, but she needs night....... I was taught plants work all day making sugars with that photosynthesis shit????? Only to grow and use them sugars at night???????? That's what I've been taught.... Is it right???????????????? Hell if I know... But I do know I use to get stoned and lay on the floor in a plant-filled barn with 8-10' plants at night,,, and you could hear shit. Little noises???? Leaf move against leaf? Wasn't any wind in there... So had to be plants growing??????????? These were under mother nature in soil............. But that's what I heard,, and that was before the net was here?????????

I run a couple of led shop lights in my veg closet 24 hrs. The cheap blurples run for 18 hrs. You can see when the various plants are resting at different times.

So there is weight to both arguments. They do want to rest after absorbing enough light but they don't need total darkness to do it.

Fair enough ✊

However I think they get dark periods outdoor I just choose to make sure I run 20/4 no issues why change it ?

You misunderstood me Joe. I wasn't commenting on your taste in music.

Great info Krip, :thanks:.
Lmao Sall good shed .

I just wiped it off anyways lol

I'm NOT suggesting anyone change what they're doing, especially if they've been successful with it. I was simply pointing out that there are no issues with vegging under 24/0 just like no issues with 20/4, 18/6, etc.

That being said, if you were to ask Ed Rosenthal, I suspect he'd answer something like:

Cannabis under continuous light will grow 33% faster than the same plants on an 18-6 light regime.

And if you asked Greg Green, I susepct he would answer:

the benefits of a 24/0 photoperiod can be seen actively in the results. More nodes are formed, more branches are created, leaf numbers increase, the plant is growing at its finest.

;)

In the end they can be run under 24/0 it’s just a matter if you see a difference in your plants at the end. You’ll have to decide if it’s worth the extra expense.

Interesting topic folks. So if Watt energy is a factor and plants are healthy, the answer is Energy used as efficiently as possible. For instance, if it's cold in your garage during lights off for 6 hours and you supplement with a heater, it might be better to run the lights 4 more hours because little heaters run around 1500Watts...just not constantly. I might have to get more data to figure my own shit out! I run 18/6! Cheers all!
