Outdoor Growing With BeezLuiz

A couple days ago I went to my son's house to help him let him watch me prune and train his plants. He's currently feeding them GeoFlora Veg nutrients at a rate of 1 cup per plant (10 gal pots) every two weeks. So far they are all looking heathy and green, except for maybe OG Kush which is a bit pale in color. I told him he may need to supplement that one soon.
He waited too long to start LST, so the plants were a bit lanky and misshaped, but he did top them a couple times. We I did the best I could considering. Non of the plants have started flowering yet, but I expect that to happen in the next couple weeks.

I had already done a little bit of LST by the time I gave the Dresden to him, so it is looking pretty good in shape. He still needs to prune the underside of the plant.
Amnesia was the toughest one to train. It had grown so tall and narrow. I actually did some super cropping on this one to get some of those tops evened up and spread out.

I'll be curious to see how these respond in the next couple weeks.

I've been seeing that some folks have issues with GF once they switch to Bloom. When it comes time for flower, I'm considering having my son feed with a combination of 3/4 cup of Bloom and 1/4 cup of Veg for each plant. That would be easier (for him) than adding other supplements. I guess I still have a while to contemplate on that.

Hi RR, I realized that I didn't respond to some of your questions, so here we go.

I've been told the same thing, and to be honest I haven't had the greatest success with autos outdoors, but I'm still learning. I believe the issue with autos is that they prefer lots of light and while outside they get good intense light, but it's only for about 14.5 hours per day for the peak of the summer -- at least where I'm growing (California). Indoor folks usually give them 20 hrs of light each day.

86 degrees F isn't bad. That's the typical temperature where I'm at, and sometimes it reaches 100 here.

I'm not sure where exactly you are located, but I see you are in USA according to your profile, so that means your daylight times are now getting shorter. That will soon trigger your photo plant to go into flower. It looks much too small to be going into flower already, so you might have an issue with that one being outdoors. I usually start my photo plants in late April / early May for outdoor growing so that they get a good couple months of veg time in before the summer solstice.
Ok that helps alot. I got a late start so I don’t think I should be expecting much from my girls. If i put my photo under a grow light in the greenhouse for a few extra hours a day to extent it till it gets bigger then plan harvest in November instead of October do you think that will work??? Thanks for your help! We’re growing in the same climate.

Hey Beez, Interesting idea. I have other flowering amendments that I was planning to use that will bring things "up" as you're thinking with this. nice!

Those plants are looking good, and if LI's Red Dragon is anything like mine he's gonna need a cage around it to hold it up in flower!

The 20 hours of light in a tent might just come close to the PPFD you are getting in 14.5 hours in the sun.
help him let him watch me

If you keep your plant under additional light you can veg it as long as you want. I would go with 18/6 (so daylight hours + indoor lighting for a total of 18). But if you want to flower it outside you will need to know your weather in the late fall. The flowering day count won't start until you stop giving it supplemental light. On the other hand, you can also flip it inside whenever you want and not worry about the fall weather! That's how I grow.

Ok so when should I absolutely need to start the supplemental light in the greenhouse??? I’m growing in the US in the south. We have long summers here. I guess what I’m asking is at how many hours of day light does the photo flip into flower so I can monitor that and get the supplemental lighting going??

Now. Plants don't flower by the number of hours of daylight outside. They flower by the diminishing hours of daylight. That starts (in the northern hemisphere so as not to offend our members from south of the equator) on the Summer Solstice (June 21st). Days start getting shorter on June 22nd and get shorter and shorter through Dec. 21st, when they start getting longer again.

Your plant already knows that every day is shorter than the previous one, so as soon as it is sexually mature (growing alternating nodes), it will start flowering,

Keep it in some sort of light (sun + inside) for 18 hours a day until you want it to start flowering, keeping in mind your fall weather (if you plan on flowering it outside).

Ok thanks . I still have so much to learn….

Every grow teaches you something to apply to the next grow!

If you decide to grow photoperiod plants outside and flower them by the sun next spring, then they should probably be sprouted inside in April/early May and moved outside as soon as the nights no longer get below ~ 60º.
I’m definitely going to get a early start next year for sure. I just put one of my grow lights up in the greenhouse now and have it set to turn off at 11pm tonight.

Hey neighbor,
I'm tagging along to watch this.
:welcome: Hey Hay! Glad to have you visit. I remember your outdoor plants from a couple seasons ago on your deck. Those were some beautiful and huge plants. :high-five:

I'm watching with interest on everyone that's using GF. We'll get a good strategy soon enough (hopefully).

I can see how that one might be a bit floppy. I'm sure I'll be asked to help with do the supports when the time comes. :laughtwo:

If you have it outdoors full time once it's in flower, then harvest time is out of your control. It'll be ready when it feels like it. If it's a sativa leaning plant, then quite possibly it will be November, otherwise most likely it will be October time frame. If the weather turns, you may need to finish it up under the lights.
I guess what I’m asking is at how many hours of day light does the photo flip into flower so I can monitor that and get the supplemental lighting going??
As Shed suggested, start the supplemental light now. After maybe a month, you could eliminate the supplemental lighting and just keep it outdoor full time. It will flip to flower pretty quickly then. The plant won't be very large, but it should make it to harvest ok.

It's been a bit since I've shared the progress of my two photo plants from @Weed Seeds Express.
They are now 84 days old and I anticipate flowering to show up in the next week or so. I'm trying to use up some of the nutrients that I had from last season, so these received the Emerald Harvest liquid veg nutes until I ran out a couple weeks ago. I decided not to switch over to the Remo Nutrients yet because I want to start them from the beginning of my next grow. So with only a few weeks left of veg, I decided to use MC. I'm feeding them at a rate of 4.5g/gal and so far they are still looking fine. Once they are established in flower, I'll switch back to my Emerald Harvest line of bloom nutes until they run out.
Purple Haze:
This one has been so easy to grow and train. I'm really trying to keep the height down this year, so I've topped it 3 times, applied LST, and even some super cropping techniques. It's still only 25 inches tall, but I'm letting it grow naturally the rest of the way. I gave it a good under carriage pruning a few days ago and will continue pruning during flower to reduce the larf at harvest.
And since my trolleys make it so easy to move the plants around, I moved them against the wall of my house for a better background

Granddaddy Purple:
This one has also been a super easy grower. The LST was a little bit trickier because of the closer node spacing, but still turned out to my satisfaction. GDP is currently at 23 inches tall and I'll let it go skyward as it pleases from now on. This also got a good pruning of the lower levels.

I hope everyone has a pleasant and productive rest of their week. :Namaste:

They're looking fine, though I would have preferred them to be the other way around in the first pic so the labels would have the Purple together. But that's just me!

Nice trimming too, and I'm really curious to see how tall they get after all the training.

will continue pruning during flower to reduce the larf at harvest.

The mod for next year is motors and a remote control...get planning. :cheesygrinsmiley:

Ps - I just love your backyard Beez.
:thanks: I need to think about getting a gardener - all that yard maintenance is taking time away from my cannabis and veggies.

I will take that under consideration. ;)

I am not yet worthy of #nolarf.

Let's update the auto plants today.
Gorilla Cookies Auto:
This plant is 45 days from sprout and has been flowering for about 22 days. It stays under my NextLight Core for most of the time. Once the fog burns off, and I remember to do it, I move it outdoors for some sunshine, then back in for the evening. I've currently got the LED lights set at 20hrs on, 4 hrs off. For nutrients, both plants are getting 4.0 g/gal of MC and 5ml/gal of CalMag. Now that it's full on flowering, I just switched to Emerald Harvest bloom nutes along with King Kola, Emerald Goddess, and Terpinator. I'm really liking how it's frosting up so far.

Zamaldelica Auto:
This thing just got too large for my indoor light setup, so I've moved it outdoors full time now. It's also 45 days from sprout and 22 days of flower. It's currently 25 inches high and finished stretching, I believe. Here's how it compares to my photo period plants - it looks considerably shorter, but is actually the same height as GDP and just a couple inches below PH.

The buds on this one are nowhere near as developed as the Gorilla Cookies. Hardly any frost at all, and probably will go 2-3 weeks longer.

American Pie Auto:
After slowly drying in the frig for 12 days I decided to transfer into cure jars. I jumped the gun a bit as the RH is still at 80%. Not sure if I'll put it back into the frig or just air dry it to 70%. Also, I checked on the 2nd batch of buds in the frig that have been in there for 7 days. Unfortunately, the top cola developed a small spot of mold - I must have not let it air dry long enough before bagging it and putting into the frig. Out of an abundance of caution, I threw most of it away (3.3g) :(

That gorilla cookies looks amazing! They all look great really. Bummer about the mold spot, sorry Beez. When you do the low and slow, do you use paper bags or jars? I’ve only tried it once with paper bags so far.

Hola Luiz!
I didn’t know whether to love your post or be sad!
:laughtwo:

The Autos are looking terrific! The Zamal has my pareidolia kicking in! :laughtwo:

Sad to hear about the mold. I had some vacuum seals fail and lost cobs to mold, so I know how it feels.
:(

I’m curious, since you are taking them in and out, what kind of IPM are you following? They are looking very healthy.
:green_heart:
