Octopot Adventures: A Community Exploration

Cut my Gg down yesterday and thought I would share the dissection of the root bowl. Used soil with perlite in the top layer and clay pebbles in the bottom with the airdome. The lowest root section shows how high the water goes in the tray the pot sits in. The level is controlled with a valve. I been thinking of doing a run without the valve and pour the water my self in the tray to be able to keep a higher level in the tray this should give more roots?

Kinda close to an Ocotopot

And this is the White Widow in it now.

White Widow

Hope I can get her to the end.

I see no reason you shouldn’t be able to get her to the end. She looks happy. Are you having problems with her? What soil and nutrients are you using in your almost-Octopot JustMeds?

Nice roots. Remember, this isn’t hydro, and the plant also has soil roots galore to draw from. Your roots won’t have that same hydro look we expect from DWC. I’d be real pleased to see what you got under my pot.

Once the roots hit the reservoir it’s recommended you keep the water level higher, but getting them there in the first place is why we keep water lower at first. I have to reign Brix back regularly because the brain says “This reservoir needs more water” when what needs to happen is the lower water levels causing roots to sense more water further away and go seeking it.

If you remove your valve would you have more tendency to overfill the reservoir in the early stages, when it’s important that it not be too full?

It is second run kit soil. I also have used the KNF inputs when I could. I only put water in the bottom. All the tea's and other mixes I add to her get poured in the top. After a few hours to drain I dump and refill bottom with RO water. When you water from top she get's her feet to wet for a couple days and it shows on her.

It's not quite that, I just disagree with the water level indicator on the three gallon.

I can understand that, given the fact that the literature says they won’t need watering every day, when the reality is they do.

This was Brix’s problem with adapting the kit to the Octopot - you don’t water from above after the first watering, which is instructed to be light. When you water from above it compromises the root growth you’re cultivating. When he watered from below without using an air stone things went nasty and funky quickly.

They recommend in the Octopot manual to use an air stone set to run 15 min an hour when you’re running organics, and to use top drenches only once a week. Have you tried using an air stone JustMeds?

I want you to succeed. I very much want to find out that the kit can be adapted to the Octopot system.

The kit was a tough one for me. I didn't use an air stone and now know that it will be required with the kit. The way I envision the kit working would require two Octopots. One you use for your waterings and the other you use for your drenches. No top feeding, a week on one Octopot, then a week on the other. That would be my next step if I were to retry the kit with the Octopot. The funk and the multiple flushings it required to get that plant back right were too much work for me to want to give it a try anytime soon.

Could remove the valve after a few weeks when it's safe to. I had much problems with under feeding this run cause I haven't adapted my self to new feeding patterns with leds. With Hps I could run the same amount that Canna Nutrients adviced to give, now I'm doubling that amount on a daily basis with no flushing in between. Btw in the previous run with the Autopots I was giving them PK 13-14 bloom booster through the soil and they reacted very bad from it and this was with the recommended dosage of the base nute. So I feel feeding them through the soil after a few weeks when they are fully adapted is out of the question.

Weekly Update: BrixNewb and SweetSue gardens

Saturday seems like a good day to get this in every week. Let’s take a look at how it’s going.

The veg tent now holds three 3 gallon Octopots.

Two days ago Brix upcanned his NL into a small Octopot. She’s a New Millennium feeder.

Brix’s Vanilla Kush is faring better than my Punch, but it may simply be that we had a hard time getting her out of her clone shipper, and she’s still recovering. They’re both Mega Crop 2.0 feeders, currently at 3 gr to the gallon of water.

Today was the first day we elected to not add any more water to the reservoirs of these three.

I can’t wait to see signs that they’ve found the res. :slide:

On to the flowering tent.

We’ve got two more in here, in the 6 gallon pots. These get watered just about every day. Brix is pushing them to be their best.

All three in the back wall are in full bloom now. :yahoo:

The Carn isn’t an Octopot, just my favorite chemovar. Indulge me. :kisstwo:

I can testify that we’re having fun. How ‘bout you? :battingeyelashes: :green_heart:

Amazing gardening you both!!! I'm surprised you water the Octopots everyday. Is that just in flower or when their roots hit the reservoir?

According to the manual you can keep them at peak performance by maintaining the water level, which pretty much has you replenishing every day. The system will work with less attention, but then Brix isn’t a man to overlook the fine points. He’s geared to strive for excellence.

And thanks J.

The temptation in me is rising every day to build an octopot, the itch is real.....lol, but could you add an air stone to the DIY octopot, as surely it would help......

Adding an air stone to the reservoir isn’t recommended Smeegol. It’ll throw off the pH drift and possibly screw up the grow. I give Chris and his team credit for having worked this part out.

They make accommodations for organics, and even so limit that to 15 minutes out of every hour in an effort to keep the particulate matter accessible without messing pH up too much.

I’d love to see you do a DIY. :battingeyelashes:

DO build one, yes smeegol.... do... IT!.

Also I have to echo the statements above... everything I've read suggest no airstone at all because of the fluctuations in p.h.

Evan without an airstone my p.h graduates everyday higher and higher.. I think this is also do to me not having dark pots... make sure your pots are dark. Mine havnt done to bad as it is how ever ...

Can I ask what sleeves people are using for thier d.i.ys... mine is a fabric sleeve... it's 7.5gal in size.
Just curious as I presume other sleeves may work better for future designs.

I think wether running dark pots or see through pots like mine. H202 is going to be the way to bring extra air to your res. I've been adding it to kill the crawlers.. H202@6% with 4 caps in around 21l.

It adds so much oxygen and don't harm my plants.. I also noticed a massive stretch.. forget the airstones just throw in the h202. I've Evan brought it down to spray my nuggs and when I need to fill my res back up... I fill it through the sleeve as a flush with h202 to fill my soil and coco mix with plenty of extra oxygen...

I'm definatly going to use it through out my next octopot.. once I've harvested this one that is...
