Obi's Aurora Indica - Indoor - T5 - Perlite Hempy

One quick note about mixing nutes.

My procedure is to blend nutrients into fresh RO water in the following order
  1. Cal Mag
  2. GH Flora-Micro
  3. GH Flora-Grow
  4. GH Flora-Bloom
  5. pH Up/Down if needed

Trying some multi-quote practice :P

Lush. Dark green. Fast growing. Nice structure.

Real good grow going on

I can't wait to see all this unfold!

Obi Wan your girls look great :goodjob:

i loved this strain and i think you will too
keep up the good works
take care and good luck

Thank you all for the comments. I don't want to jinx things but, yeah, things are going fairly smooth with this grow so far. This site and it's members are such a fantastic resource. I'll do my best to pay it forward.

Greetings Obi Wan!

You've got a great grow going and I'm inspired by your results. I've been following yours and several others and I feel it's time to dip my toes into the hempy waters. I've done some hempy cloning, and I'm awed by the roots that develop this way.

I've been a grower since the 90's with varying success. I live in a very hot climate. My grow cabinet is in an outdoor shed I've sealed, insulated, and AC'd. My daytime temperature average is mid '80s with occasional spikes in either direction. My nighttime temps are in the mid to upper 70's.

I see your temps are what I would consider to be the high side of things.

When I've tried hempy cloning in the past, I usually get quite a bit of green algae on the top. This hasn't previously been an issue since I go from the hempy cloner into dirt. I am concerned, however, that a full hempy grow would develop a much more robust harvest of algae... thus causing many more issues. I've not tried a hempy grow because of this concern.

So, my question to you... do you do anything specific to avoid algae growth? Have you had any algae growth experience?
Any other random thoughts?

Sidenote: I notice your ceiling temp average is actually 1 degree lower than your floor temp average. Speaks well of your ventilation setup

Hi Tead,

I'm a pretty new grower over here. I have one Pro-Mix grow completed and now this here hempy in progress. I've made it this far on educated guesses and a little luck. Just so we're clear on my experience level.

I have given algae only a passing thought until now. I understand it can be of concern but it was/is unclear how much care needs to be taken to avoid a catastrophic failure. I have enough basic knowledge that tells me any time one has a warm, moist environment things are likely to grow. Good things and bad things. My temps, especially the bucket or res temp, are high. I completely agree. I wish I could shave at least another 5 degrees off but I think I'll have to encapsulate or change my heat source to achieve that.

More to the point. My decision to use the Perlite/Vermiculite was made in part because I'm hoping that if I should encounter some kind of root or media problem I may be able to take corrective action. Most likely in a chemical form.

My initial thoughts on preventative care or corrective courses
  • Occasional top dressing of diluted H2O2 to treat the first few inches of grow media
  • Investigate using a hydro treatment like Aquashield as preventative maintenance
  • Use a vented container cover for the first few weeks to protect the topsoil from direct light
  • Lower the hempy bucket res temperture

I am kind of diving in feet first with this hempy grow. You are doing well to sort issues out before they arise. Hopefully we can both learn from this attempt as I go!

I ran some ISO through a bit of ABV and a coffee filter last night. It went a little something like this:

  1. 10.0 grams of ABV from 410°F/210°C sessions
  2. Roughly 0.5 cup/0.12L of ISO
  3. Soak for five minutes
  4. Strain and press ABV/ISO through coffee filter into glass dish
  5. Allow ISO to evaporate over time from dish

It has been 24 hours. What remains?

Additional research leads me to believe I soaked the ABV for four minutes thirty seconds too long. >.<

Nah man, your 5 min soak is fine. For fresh or cured bud, I prefer two runs (i.e. one 30 second run with frozen AVB and freezer temp ISO, and a second 5 minute run to strip the oils). Your 5 min soak will be fine as there aren't any significant terpenes left in AVB anyway.

Your evap time is relative to the size of container and the quantity of ISO (duh), but once it's a dark, sticky consistency, it's pretty much ready. You can use it in many ways. I usually filter mine into a small 1/2 c flat, glass dish. If I do a bigger run, it just takes longer to evap. Once evaporated completely, I use a skillet tool to test consistency. After doing it a couple times, you get a good feel.

I'm pretty gentle on my initial use temps (375f) and after soak and filter it's a nice, smooth product. As long as you don't cook it down or vape your weed too high initially it can have a nice nutty flavor and I find the high is still solid if not as complex when dabbed on my d-nail/bubbler. We've scraped out a glob before and smeared it on a party bowl to good effect. IMO, it's a win-win (easy to make and made from what would otherwise be waste) with the obvious bonus of a mellow high.

Hey Governmentchz. Good info there.

My one ABV jar is full of the last of the last. High temp material, vaped weed & wand hash sandwiches, jar kief, bits of stems, grinder garb, etc. I wasn't expecting much in the way of flavor but wow this stuff tastes bad. The raw taste right off the fingers after forming the hash (or whatever) is horrific. I sampled some through my vape and through a pipe. It added some density to the vapor production and the flavor was better than raw but nothing to write home about. I don't like the taste of smoke so I'll keep my comments related to it's effects... meh :)

I have a feeling that my container of ABV and garb may be just that. Garbage. It was vaped at quite high temperatures which leads me to think there wasn't/isn't much left to be extracted. What little substance that was gleaned from the ISO extraction most likely came from the keif and other junk mixed in. I'm guessing the ABV contributed mostly to the flavor department in this batch.

I did drop my vape temp down about a week or so ago. The heavy hits were irritating with regular use. Currently I'm running about 375F to 385F rather than the 410F. I'll collect this cooler ABV for a while. I think I only have about 10g or so at the moment.

I find the reclaimed wand oil from my Arizer Solo vape pretty tasty. It adds just the right amount of warmth to the inhale flavors and peppery hash notes after release. Sometimes I'll add some to a dose before bed for a sedative boost. I was hoping for something similar in flavor and effect profile with the ABV. I have about 2-3oz of this high temp ABV garb left. I'm considering QWISO, alcohol tincture, butter or oil for the remainder of the batch. Knowing how badly the raw hash tasted I am reluctant to create an edible with this stuff. Additionally, only the first 10g of collected ABV were used from the stash. There are layers of history in there, lol. I hate to just throw it!

QWISO the whole batch and move on?

Cheers,
/Obi

In all honesty, it sounds like you may be right. Anything reclaimed/extracted from 410f AVB might just be junk. I couldn't say as there is such a diversity in individual tastes. I know there have been times I was thankful for the sparse drop of incidental oil, but for the most part I'm kinda picky. I am all about frugality, but I might have to say when if it were scorched. I'm blacktoast intolerant, so try to stay away from burnt.

I feel like I've been neglecting my plants. I haven't had time to work with them over the last week or so.

I think I may have too many plants again. I thought I was doing pretty good reducing my number of plants from eight to three for this grow. The Aurora Indica are bushing out nicely but they really don't have much room to grow beyond the width of their buckets. I wonder if I will be able to veg for the full planned eight weeks? Hmm...

I'd like to get my scrog installed asap. I wonder if I should do a little defoil first?

/Obi

Your plants are looking great Obi. They might be a little tight in there for a full 8-week veg, but a little defol and minor training and they should squeeze in there. Personally, I'd keep them tidy under their skirts, but let them go otherwise. They look healthy.
