Not So Rookie Anymore

Nirvana's Northern Lights

420-magazine-mobile911701514.jpg

Kinda hard to see but i use those small plastic covered paper clips at the edge of my pot to tie them down.

420-magazine-mobile1890666640.jpg

I simply link a few together to reach the taller branches.

420-magazine-mobile226368836.jpg

Because their so flexible and have the plastic coating makes it perfect for the plants!
they dont hurt the stems as they grow past their restraints.

This is just after afterthing has been tied up.

420-magazine-mobile1543131043.jpg

I pinched and twisted as far down on the main stem as i could in a decent sized spot.
As the branches start to need less restraint ill pinch those to seal the deal so to speak and make the bends more permanent.

Again i just need the other 3 little ones to catch up somewhat so we can flip to flower.
Otherwise i would be flipping in another week or 2.

Im hoping all my efforts and planning works out and i dont run out of space too early.

Tho looking at it we might be cutting it pretty close...
I hate only having one tent.

Well thats all for now everything has remained constant should be ready for a water tomorrow.

So i debated starting another journal.
So far im 0 for 2 when it comes to finishing the journal.
(although the last 2 grows i tried to journal were successes in their own way)

Anyway....

Equipment

·Grow tent 2'7" x 2'7" x 81"
Space is pretty limited. One of my biggest problems is managing my space. Ive misjudged the stretch and weeks of veg in the past and had it come back to haunt me. So that will be something im looking to improve on this time around.

600w HID with A/C hood
My plan was to go LED for heat and space. Before i could order it tho something came up. Plants started suffering and it forced me to go in the attic... With everything else working in my tent to combat heat im in full control of the temperature. And since it aint broke...

·6" 440cfm inline fan
·6" carbon scrubber
I have these hooked up directly to each other and venting straight out the top of my tent
·6" duct booster
This is hooked up to one side of my hood pulling the heat off the bulb and out the tent.
the other side of the hood is connected to the 6" hole on the opposite side.

Currently im not using any ducting which means my light it isnt adjustable with how its set up.
This is more than likely going to change especially during flower when ill want to make damn sure all the air coming out of my tent has been scrubbed first!
but also because that booster fan can only do so much realistically
and id be able to move my light cooling it from the inline.

·4" duct booster to create and active intake.
·4 clip fans
·FFHF soil (shop was out of OF)
·advanced nutrients (hobbyist level)
·bud candy
· bloombastic

like i said im starting this journal a little late so this will be brief.

Started seeds in rapid rooters
2 regular nirvana northern lights
2 seeds from like 2 grows ago that i found.
( i believe these came from a plant that went hermie on me from outgrowing the tent. wish i had pics that bitch was bigger than me! But the buds it came from had no signs of hermie at all what so ever! I know the genetics are northern lights and whatever that super sativa freebie i had was)
Ive read that these seeds will probably be hermie as well if anyone reading can shed light thatd be awesome.

I also dropped a seed i found in some loud.
And just recently i dropped 2 more northern lights and 2 more freebies.
My plants got sick outta nowhere i panicked and dropped the seeds as backups. But now all is well and its too late so now their just to increase our female ratio.

So the original were all above ground nov 30th so that makes em about 20 days old.
420-magazine-mobile705255593.jpg

(Nov 30th)

I kept them moist in rapid rooters until i saw roots. Great white mychorizae (spell check) helped speed that process as usual.
Then i put them in their 1 gal pots and let them do their thing.

420-magazine-mobile160369495.jpg

Starting out they were under the cfls shown in the picture and a 50w led shop light. ( i have mixed feelings about that light)

And thats how they stayed until recently.

In this pic things were looking pretty sad.
I had a cal mag issue come up as well as a ph issue and 4 were going through something.
Thats when i switched to my usual R/O water and bumped up my nutes from 1/4 to full strength per the AN nutrient calculator. as well as full dose of
cal/mag 1tsp/gal
420-magazine-mobile579649204.jpg

I also added the MH its only on 75% sitting way above the plants. Ill move it close if i notice any stretching.
Things instantly got better!
Old growth stopped getting worse and new growth wasn't affected at all.

Also i topped the plants at the 3rd or 4th node. I did this as soon as the next node started!

Today

Some key things to note.
Dont know if the little homeade co2 generator works but it aint hurting and not in the way so why not.
Ive been on 24/0
Not sure when but ill cut it back
20/4
18/6
16/8
14/10
12/12

Im hoping that by doing this the plants will show sex sooner than 12/12. I know theyll show it anyway but id like to see if changing the light gradually in veg theyll show me before i tie them up in a scrog and flip the switch.

I have been making it a point to practice good wet/dry cycles. Because of this im noticing i feel more in tune with the plants and whats happening in my tent.

My humidity is super low like less than 30! Ive already grown tired of fighting to keep it up when its below 0° outside. Ill reap the benefits come flower cuz lord knows i dont wanna lose another batch to mold.

But ive noticed just how much my plants drink because of this so ill be uppotting tonight to 2 gal pots
I dont think the 1 gal is as packed full of roots as id like before i transplant but with the humidity and plants drinking so much so fast dont really have a choice.

I promise to anyone reading we'll complete this journal good or bad so please have a seat and TIA for any help!

I know what your talking about when you misjudged the stretch. I am on my first grow and the 2nd week of flowering. I just hope they don't outgrow my space. I started some plants three weeks after the first ones and wanted to wait for week 5 from seed which put my big ones at 8 weeks. Your plants are looking great I hope all goes well for you this grow. If you get a chance take a look at my grow. Its Killian's first grow. I haven't figured out how to add a signature yet. Subbed up
.
Keep in mind that you can no only scrog horizontally but also vertically on the sides you your tent. :)

So that my net and canopy would look something like this...

Lol thats the best i could get it

Any tips on how to best achieve this?

I have a 3x3 modular scrog net on the way i got off ebay.

Ill probably need more netting then huh?

So quick update

plants are looking great they were dry when i got home today.

I gave them week 3 of the AN nutrient calculator.
I kept nutes at full strength because im still yet to see burn from the last time they were fed.

Treated my r/o water with calmag
ph was at 6.5 going in the pots and about 6.3 coming out.

My net came in today. I put it in the tent at 12 inches above the base of the plants.
I know their not ready for it yet but im trying to get used to operating with the net and plants being locked in.

I think im at the point where idc im gunna scrog and if we have to pull a male later oh well ill just take the experience.
Consider it practice....

Here are some pictures

This little one i only gave a splash of r/o water with some great white because the top soil was so dry.
420-magazine-mobile1458035815.jpg

These are the little ones were waiting to catch up so we can flip.
So i dont know how nirvana does it but im guessing the 10 random freebies you get are all of the same strain.
whatever strain this is i was so unfortunate to get really sucks!
this seedling looks to have the skinny sativa type leaves and is already stretching huge compared to the other ones who popped the same day!
The only light its been under is a 600w MH turned to 75%
Why is it stretching so much already.
Pretty sure ill be getting rid of this one i can already tell i wont have the space

Final shot of the day

420-magazine-mobile1333932856.jpg

I think i will be turning the lights back to 20/4 tomorrow.

Id like to cut the lights back slowly until 12/12.
Im at 24/0 now so how fast should that be done? How fast is too fast?
I was thinking maybe every 3 or 4 days cut it back so id be at 12/12 in about 15 days?
The first four plants would be at about 37 to 40 days from seed by the time i hit 12/12.

The little ones considering they make it that far would be about 25 30 days from seed with the lights being turned back during that time.

So my question is what is a good rate to gradually turn the lights back to have a positive effect on the plants?

And

What will this mean for the little ones growing so close to the seasons changing so to speak?

I dont expect those to get to big id like to flower them simply to add a little variety to selection come harvest.
I also dont want to risk the rest of my crop stressing them out or overcrowding the other ones for a couple grams.

Oh well im sure well figure it out one way or the other. Enough rambling lol

The SCROG is a cool technique but looks like it is a real pain to water once they start growing through the screen. Your grow is looking good. I woke up this morning and went down in my basement to smoke a bowl and check on my girls only to find out I threw a breaker. Lucky for me it happened during lights out last night. My temps were at 63 deg.F and the RH at 90% ouch. Im going to find a different circuit for my portable heater. Hope you have a very merry Christmas.

I would raise the solo cups higher. They are streching to reach light. Imo the bigger plants are shading it. Happy growing fam.

LOUD ONLY

I agree. Raise them or add some 5000k (blue spectrum) LED bulbs.
Let the soil dry out a bit and transplant to a larger pot. Transplant them deep.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

I thought that having them under the hid would be too much but you guys are right its not enough!

Im gunna transplant them into bigger solo cups today.
Id put them in one gallons but i dont have enough soil and its christmas eve so yea...

And ill be adding a cfl directly over them for now.

This makes me wonder.... Should i lower my hid?
Or raise my intensity?
I figured i wouldnt use the 100% 600w until flower.

The tent is only 2.7x2.7x81
In such a small space is it even necessary to have all the power? And heat.... Thats my biggest concern

Try and spread your grow over all the outlets in whatever room your growing.
Long extension cords for the other side of the room or even a different room next door to avoid overloading your breakers.

And yes scrog seems like its gunna be challenging but i think in the end it will be so worth it.

As far as watering goes tho, i saw an idea somewhere around here where he used a funnel and vacuum extension tubes to be able to reach the far plants...
Wish i could give them credit for that! but im definetely stealing that idea.

Since my tent is only 2'.7"x 2'.7" it doesnt make reaching back to the plants too hard.
and collecting runoff is a breeze with my little stanley shop vac. ( i plug this up in another room.
if i plug it in my surge protector where my tent is running it trips the protector after a while :/ )

So hopefully with these tools it wont make it too inconvenient.

And yea power that heater from somewhere else!
i have a little tiny we use for a different room and that little thing pulls like 1600w by itself!
I could imagine itd trip my breaker immediately if it was hooked up with my tent

And merry christmas to you too!

At this phase in the plants life there is no need for high intensity lighting. Get yourself a 24 inch, four bulb T5 HO fixture.
Or replace the cfl's with 60 watt 5000k LED bulbs. They use a fraction of the electricity.
No heat.

In two months I've use 14000 watts with 2 bulbs for 4 plants.
That's what your HID uses in 24 hours.
Huge difference.

Ok so i put the little ones in bigger solos and buried the stem on the stretched one especially.

I also raised them so that their at the level of the others and shouldnt be shaded.

I opted against giving them their own light since i got so much light and power With the hid would a cfl even do anything?

420-magazine-mobile1636452554.jpg

Also i let some of the lower lstd growth go so it can raise up and reach the top

420-magazine-mobile988947145.jpg

After another node or 2 ill probably top one more time and begin filing out the net.

Off the this xmas party :)

Yes something like that haha just need to make sure that the footprint of the light is sufficient. I think this technique may be more favorable when using a round bulb that spreads light 360 degrees angle, but yeah no need to go all the way up on the walls but it's always and option should space be an issue.

Merry Christmas ;)
