NorthernCosmos' First Indoor Soil Auto Grow: 2019

...or perhaps I shouldn't be laughing. I know that on the other side of the border, there's practically nothing to get hold of. That sucks for sure.

Great for trade! ;)

Of course, parts of the credit for the good grow goes to my 420 friends for the coaching and encouragement :thumb:

I'm very humbled by that comment Cosmos, I think the most should go to others. I just come up with craZy, sometimes impossible ideas to solve rather simple problems just for fun.

Shed is the dictionary here and can answer almost anything regarding growing or questions regarding music industry in the 21st century... :laughtwo:

The grow must go on! (geddit? :p)

I'm, trying some soil tweaks for the two new plants. I don't know what I'm doing, it's just for the hell of it, really - mixing things up a bit, introducing something new.

The mix consists of 3 different commercial gardening soils, all are peat/sand/lime based and precharged with nutes, and one has some compost and an extra charge of microbes. Then I added my own compost from the garden, which is microwave nuked as usual to kill pests. Then I added a couple of cups of coffee-grounds, three or four tbs of molasses, one chopped up banana peel, a scoop of soil and a couple of fistfuls of crushed dried up leaves from the previous grow and a helping of perlite. The final touch was a few silently muttered incantations.

A little later today, or tomorrow morning, depending on when I see their taproots, I'm dropping a Stardawg auto from Fast Buds (the last of three, two of which weren't viable) and a Blackberry Gum auto from Seed Stockers.

I'm already getting worried not having any plant at all right now... :laughtwo:

Sounds interesting, every time I try something new it always goes south but I think you might have better luck Cosmos.

I tried the coffee cure but I think I gave them too much of it that time. In the summer house I always rinse the coffee press in the garden, usually a Magnolia its more than three times as big as the other two with same age. :cheesygrinsmiley:

Got a lot of stuff done out there today as well so it feels good, feels like my neck is strengthening but I should take it easy I've been here before and taking too much water over me.... :)

Pace yourself, CraZy (not on the growing front though; you need to drop some seeds ASAP ;)). By the looks of the weather in recent times there'll be a long nice summer to get stuff done.

Too much coffe-grounds? Hmm... I hope I didn't do anything dangerous with that soil mix. I forgot to add some ashes - I have plenty of wood ashes from when we ran a wood-pellets heating system here - I suppose I can add some to the first watering.

The dirt-cheap seed has a tap-root and is ready to go, but the fancy-expensive one has not even started to open up (Again! The last time I wasted 14 days on them before giving up...). I've moved them from glasses of water onto a wet towel, and will get back to them in the morning.

I don't think I can count on luck with this one, I'm clinically unlucky - the statistics speak for themselves :laughtwo:

I know and its hard thinking ahead for me, I always get fired up when both weather and myself feel better and do too much just because I don't know how tomorrow will be so better to smith while iron is red hot!

Too much coffe-grounds?

Naaah, never can get to much coffee, or? :laughtwo:

The dirt-cheap seed

Bulk Seed Bank?

I don't think so, you are doing great. Much better than most beginners, I never seen anyone jump as fast into perpetually growing as you!

I find that hard to believe
I have a theory (which may just be a self-justification) that outdoor plants have a lot of things to contend with that indoor plants don't, which means they spend less time making trichomes on the leaves. Bugs, temperature changes, mold/mildew, humidity swings...all things that an outdoor plant has to adjust to and recover from. That's my excuse anyway :)
21st century
Wrong century Crazy, but thanks!

Did you cook this mix? Wouldn't it need time to turn all those raw materials into something the plant can use?

Bulk Seed Bank?
It's from Seed Stockers. They're sort of like Bulk Seed Bank in that they offer low priced no-nonsense seeds. All the plants I've grown i the tent so far have been from them. Ideally I'd want them to be a little bit taller before the first node since the bottom leaves hug the bucket rims and some even rest on the soil, which makes watering a little tricky. I don't know if that's due to genetics, phenotype, growing conditions - but I've had 10 of those shorties now. Other than that I'm very happy with them. Of course I lack experience and will surely find new seed banks and strains in the years to come.

The Blackberry Gum auto from Seed Stockers is in the soil. Still waiting to see a tail on the Stardawg auto...

No cooking, so the whole thing is a bit of a folly. I was thinking about it, but it didn't happen... I'm hoping that in a few weeks something may start to happen in the soil. Perhaps the incantations will speed things up :p I'll plan better next time and let it cook, and perhaps even try to gather some of the many soil additives I'm reading about. Something in the direction of a LOS mix would be cool. But first I need to see if the plants like this mix.

Wrong century Crazy, but thanks!

Lol Ok, I never got the hang of that century definition over here we count weeks instead. :)

Ideally I'd want them to be a little bit taller

I think its time for you to advance and start with photos now, much easier to control them in height and more stable when pruning them. :slide:

But if you want to keep growing perpetual a veg tent is a must, but on the other hand when you get that special strain going you can just keep cloning that plant infinitely. :cheesygrinsmiley:

:smokin:

Yes! I really want to try my hand at photos, and I will do it as soon as I have another tent (may be a while). I'm not ready to switch to photos in a single tent though, since I enjoy the steady stream of produce from the overlapping auto grow too much - don't want to break the momentum, IYSWIM. When I get one more tent, it will be the photo flowering tent, and then I'd veg photos and keep growing autos in the current tent.

So many things to try out; strains, soil, coco, hydro, photo, auto, cloning, SCROG, SOG, xxx-lining, nutes, lights, airflow, environment control - more than enough to keep anyone busy for an untold number of years! :)

It's day 53 for the 4 Northern Lights. They're looking good, but it's almost as if it's two different strains - two are short and bushy, and two are sparse and stretchy, ref- picture below. BTW, don't worry about the drooping leaves. I skipped one feeding, so they were a little thirsty.

The el-cheapo Blackberry Gum has broken the soil today, but the fancy-schmancy Stardawg is nowhere to be seen. Will it be a third dud out that seed pack, I wonder. If so, I'll never pay more than $2 for a seed again... :laughtwo:

This is where I'm at now - comfortable stash (5 of the small jars were established today from last weeks harvest) and 6 more flowers going:
