Peering at trichomes down a magnifying glass is great for collecting some data, but I like to think of that as looking at a handful of sand and deciding if I like the beach or not. You're seeing an incredibly tiny fraction of the overall plant though the scope.
I understand the apprehension though, I think we all go through it. You will both have lots of people willing to give their opinion, but ultimately it's for the person in the room to decide.
That said, I think on average most first timers tend towards too early rather than late, so when you think it might be time, give it another week.
