I need one of those! Unfortunately I know myself and I would steal from it and when the actual emergency happened. I would find a note;

"I owe you 1 delicious bud" signed. Dr.Bob

That guy is always one step ahead of me.

Hey BAR
Just curios why the string/twine on the rolling tray?
High Mr. Blue, that's part of the picture on the "RAW" tray. It looks so real doesn't it?

Looks like you got some seed. Now the big question????????????? You got to grow afew smaller ones to see what ya got. The mother looked just like a dog but you never know. Hopefully you used great care with the pollen. Pollen can be viable for a long time. I as you know, got hit bad with rouge pollen. I honestly think my shop vac picked it up and spread it evenly around the flower room. But then I handled mine stupidly this time. Funny thing, last time I wanted to f with some seed, same shit happened. Guess you can't teach a old dog a new trick...... You got alot going on. A good air flow of descent r/h helps keep some of just the nasties away. Just doing a drive bye. Keepem Green
Thanxx Woody. Every time you drop by you leave us with some great info. We've sprayed and wiped down the Bloom Tent just in case and have dropped about 7 of the beans in a paper towel. Probably will put at least one of the tap-roots under 12/12 or 11/13 from the jump for a quick run to see if these beans are worth keeping.

MY 420mag:rollit: 3yr SKILLS TEST UPDATE

SOUR DIESEL Feminized Day 59

Today she received her 5th and final round of topping. Out of the 16 top sites I was only able to top 15 because I accidentally snapped one; it was thrown in the cloner.

Yes I do Madam Fifi, it was I. It was an ... (link)>>> AUTO AFGHAN KUSH CLONE we pollinated under 18/6 in the Veg Tent by sending a male back. Didn't have to worry about impregnating any photos in the same tent since they can't be pollinated in veg.
Thanxx for reminding me, I forgot all about those beans.

I have a theory brewing about small pots; As some of you might know we ran a Perpetual Grow with nothing but 2lt Soda Pop Pots for 2 years. I didn't do much training other than topping & a little LST /Super-cropping and most times not even that. We averaged about a 1/2 zip per plant.
Now that we're running a 3gal Perpetual Grow there's been not much more than a 50% increase in yield. I'm thinking that unless your dealing with 5gals pots or bigger it might be better (with the exception of LA's legendary Fluxing) to grow only vertically.

Just an observation but I'll keep you posted as we keep feeling our way around this grow.

Anything new other than reveg's.....:circle-of-love:
Yes indeed! Just to name a couple:

We have 2X Black Jack x Bubblegum grown in honor of 7Dust...

And we have 4X White Widow grown in honor of my Partner in Crime, Cannafan.

Interesting thoughts on smaller pots. So your supposition followed through would be that practicing training in pots 5 gal. and up would be beneficial? I'm trying to wrap my head around training techniques B A R. I've got six transplanted, four autos and two photos, all in five or larger, and I feel like it's kinda imperative that I do some sort of training. I've been resistant up to now, but I really want to max these out. I'll have to watch the seedlings closely and figure out what would work best. Time to pull the bonsai wire out.

That training technique Graytail taught me gave me 2 ounces out of the Carnival without trying really, but that was in 7 gallons of soil, and I feel like there's more potential there, you know what I mean? But then I ask myself why I'm unhappy with two ounces of primo cannabis grown under stress? :laughtwo: The level of excellence around here drives you to be better.

Your skills test is doing well. Five toppings, where has the time gone?

Been thinking about you all day. I'm glad I finally found time to stop. :hugs:

B A R, Sue,

I choose a final pot size based on how large I want the plant to be at the end of flowering. I want the roots to fill the pot but not be root bound. Generally I do something to build a better canape, though I start much later than you do.

Something I want to start tracking in a search for a good final plant size is grams per day per plant. Atrain's autos are impressive, especially considering how fast he is finishing them.

There was a time when I grew a few monsters. Then, I decided to go with smaller plants. Then, a few disasters. Then, I ran out of smoke.

I am beginning to get back to perpetual growing. My thinking until I come up with something better is around 6 to 8 oz is going to be good yield for the time spent with strains that are naturally large plants. For me that would be a 7 gal. at a minimum. I am using 15 gal, but they are plastic. I should switch to fabric but I worry about moving them around.

Best

I use either seven or ten gallon fabric pots Canyon, and I put them into a plastic crate. This makes them much easier to move around. I don't think the 15 gallon ones would fit. Ten gallons for a single plant is a decent chunk of soil. I hear ya, fifteen gallons is better. :laughtwo: I stuck with the limit of ten gallons though, precisely because I could fit them into the crates. It really makes them so easy to move around you won't believe it.

Canyon I want to preface this with a small disclaimer. I have no intentions of hijacking this journal so I will keep this as brief as I can.
You:I want the roots to fill the pot but not be root bound.
Exactly!! Couldn't agree more. :cheesygrinsmiley:
You:I decided to go with smaller plants, a few disasters, I ran out of smoke.
I have not tried too many Autos/smaller plants, but my mentor BigIrishDude (BID)had success with them

I always start in smaller pots unless I am going into a hydro set-up. As far as moving them around I have seen people use boards with casters if they were going to use large pots/bags. My plants go from 2 qt pots, to 3 1/2 gallon plastic, and then into their planters outside. If they are going to be inside the whole time they live their existence in 3 1/2 gallon pots with a lot of LST manipulation and topping until they are flowering then nutes, nutes, and more nutes! :cheesygrinsmiley:
Just thought I would share

Canyon, I 100% agree that bigger pots produce bigger plants but in our limited real estate even going with 5gal pots would damper our perpetual grow. With these 3gal pots I can fit up to 6 plants in all 3 tents and still have the table top for seedlings & clones in the Veg Tent.

You might say "why not use 5, 7, or 10gal pots and have 4, 3, or 2 plants in each tent growing perpetually". This is because I grow for self-indulgence and like to smoke different strains. With the 2lt Soda Pop Pots and now with the 3gal Smart Pots I have more variety and shorter intervals between harvest hence what we like to call the "Never Ending Harvest".
Look at it like dinner; We had fish & brussel sprouts last night, tonight we might have baked chicken & rice, and for Saturday we'll order Chinese. I'm the same way with my weed now. I don't want what I had yesterday.

And Hoz, firstly this thread could never be hijacked. It's all about opinions and ideas; keep it coming. The grow is only what it's based upon.
You and a lot of others here have proven that we can grow decent size plants in smaller pots. I'm not out to make a bench mark here, just get the best yields I can get out of the 3gals in our conditions. Heck, Josh223 my inspiration, was getting over an ounce out of 2lts on a regular basis.
Now I know a few are going to disagree with this but I strive for rootbound plants. Lester Freeman aka Relaxed Lester proved it awhile back that over crowded roots won't cause any problems with the health of our plant. In fact if you plan on sticking with smaller pots you want them rootbound because this means you're using every inch available in that pot.

I hope between the 3 of us we shed a little light on your questions Sue. It's been said time and time again, there's no right or wrong way to grow just the way that works best for you.

Growing big plants out of small pots is a good challenge and keeps things interesting to me. For big girls 7gal is fine in my eye, for the most part I'm growing now in 3 or 4's fives are if its a large girl. Cloth pots that let your roots air prune let you push the limits further of course. My big flux at the mo is only in a 5 gal and isn't showing any signs of stress and is getting on now with the long veg.
As for training each individual plant should tell you what will work or compliment its form, it just takes a bit of repetition :)

This grow I'd like to see if I can develop that eye for the training possibilities. I've been reading and watching all you guys now for over a year, and I should have picked up some instincts. Let's see where it goes. Thank you all for helping me think through this. :hugs:

Hozona,
Backing up a bit, shortly after I got the grow room going I started using whisky barrels. For about a year I drug them around and caught runoff in a large tray. I finally bought some furniture dollies from Harbor Freight. Catch trays even fit under them.

The oak works a lot like the cloth pots. It breathes a little and wicks away some water. The plastic pots stay to wet near the bottom if I don't watch my watering.

I am 68 and lifting the 15 gallon pots is about the limit on my back now if they have been watered. It is hard to believe I could tear a Washington Metro phone book in half when I was doing line work.

Sue,
So, ten gallon square cloth pots will fit in a Mall Wart crate. I am thinking I will try few along with at least one of the barrels again as the 15's cycle into flower. I can always use the 15's for plant stands. Do you have a preference for a brand or style?

You're still a young man dammit!! :laughtwo: I'm only five years behind you and I'm working on growing younger every year. LOL!

I do have a preference Canyon. For my money, you can't beat Geo Pots. They hold up much better IMHO. However, having said that, you're planning to set them into a crate, so you don't have to be so concerned about that quality, do you? Buy whatever you can get quickly or inexpensively. The crates take care of the heavy work of support. You just need to contain the soil so it doesn't spill out. That could be done with landscape cloth. Two layers of thin cloth would suffice, I'm sure.

I have the Geo Pots on hand. If I didn't and were planning to use crates I'd go with less expensive pots.
