N420 Grows Barney's Farm Orange Sherbert & Special Guests

A lot depends on the plants and your taste in electric bills! Some plants droop at the end of the day with 24/0 but don't at 20/4. In an ideal world, you calculate your DLI, and when the plants have hit that you turn the lights off for the night.

Barring those calculations, I think 18/6 or 20/4 would be fine!
Thanks Shed that's a really interesting read. I'll have to do a bit of research not sure what ppfd the lights I have actually put out and don't have a lux meter. To start I think I'll go with 18/6 for the hydro savings plus a longer dark period will help get rid of heat that might build up now that we are getting into some warmer weather that will get hotter as the grow progresses.

18/6 is always a safe bet. A lux meter down the road is a good investment when you have the change. Mine runs about $35 on amazon (Dr Meter LX1330B).
A Lux meter would definitely be a good thing to pick up I'll look into that. Would be nice to know how much light I'm actually getting to the canopy so I can really dial my light height and intensity right in, I'm going on guess work at the moment.

I really need to find out too. Im maybe a little too high from lights to canopy. Im still trying to find my sweet spot for her happiness and a push to bulk her up too..
Usually start about 30/32inches away start of flower and let them grow into it after the stretch..they usually settle at the end of flowing around 18inches.
Just rambling :roorrip:..lol

I usually try to keep the lights around 18 to 24 inches away from early veg all the way through flower. I have 3 different lights I switch between depending on their age. 135 watt led for seedlings and early veg and a 260 watt led or cmh for later veg or flower depending if I need the heat from the cmh during the winter months. I use the hand test for the cmh to judge my distance if I think it's getting to close I put the back of my hand between the light and the plant if it's too warm for my hand I raise it. With the led if the tops look a bit droopy and it's fine everywhere else lower on the plant it's my signal to raise the light. It's not scientific in any way but seems to work lol.

Nice job, I usually run 18/6 but a lot of people swear by 20/4.
Thanks Penny! I'm thinking 18/6 and will probably have my dark period start at noon so the lights are off during the hottest part of the day.

Sounds like you decided on the light a schedule already. Just wanted to say, I started out my last batch of autos on a 20/4. Once they got deeper into blooming, they started to droop before lights out, so adjusted it an hour at a time down to 18/6. As others already said, a lot depends on each individual plant and what they can take, but I think you made a good decision with 18/6.

That's a really good point Hh. I'm assuming you get faster growth on 20\4? Might be worth trying 20/4 for the veg cycle while I do my training and try to get them a decent size before they start to flower. Then once they are flowering reduce it an hour a day until I get to 18/6.

I've got the small led and a small heater on low setup in the 4x8 right now just to see what my temps are. So far it's sitting at 65 degrees with an Rh of 44%. May end up putting the cmh in there at 36 inches to get my temps up or maybe put the heater on high, it's a work in progress lol.

Warmer is going to get you faster growth, so that's the best way to go. Also, most growers try to get more lights to their plants in flower rather than less. If the electric bill isn't an issue I would see how they do at 20/4, and if they droop you may want to back it to 18/6 even for veg.
OK that makes sense. It's still fairly cool in the garage where the tents are set up just trying to find a good balance of temperatures and the right intensity of lighting to start them out with. The more I think about it 20/4 sounds like a better approach to try and maximize the ppfd they get in a day as well as keeping them nice and warm.

Bit of a boring update this morning I moved Tangiematic, Pinapple Express and Purple Lemonade into rapid rooter's last night and put them in the buckets. Purple Punch had a very small tap root this morning so should be planting her tonight. Now we wait for something green to appear!

Poked my head in the tent this morning and I found something green hidden under the hydroton.

It's Tangiematic! no surprise there she had the longest tap root compared to her sister's when I planted her.

Pinapple Express is going to join the party soon as well. Looks like Purple Lemonade will be up soon as well.

Looks to me like Purple Punch is ready to be planted today. The end of her tap root looks weird in the pic but it's got a curl like a pig's tail never seen that before.
