My very 1st Grow- Northern Lights

Thanks ggrant! You sure showed him sir tokelot :goodjob: :bravo:  More importantly, My set up it going to change drastically. Im definitely going with BPN, though its not gonna be with every feeding.

Think of it as how we take vitamins to help with out normal diet, thats how i'm hoping to feed her.So i was going to use farmers pride organic grow 2-1-1 and farmers pride organic bloom 0.5-3-2. One plant and a few clones shouldn't need that much food. especially if the soil i'm using holds moisture for about a week. Does that sound good? Any recommendations? Anyone?

moving on to lighting-

Im hoping to use two 100watt cfls
Each produce about 1650 lumens which is probably as high as you can get with a cfl light system haha. And as growth progresses adding more. Any suggestions?

Oh yeah! I dare you to lie under one for an hour 12" away. I'll bet you'll have the worst sunburn of your life! I use a 400W HPS so I was trying to give a safe distance to use - I may have been overly conservative. Have you ever seen a 100W HPS in action? I have and believe me, you do not want to get too close to its bulb!

Hmm, I try to run my 400w hps 6-8 inches from canopy at all times and have never experienced light burn. I believe if my 400w was at 12", I would be receiving roughly 4x less light than if it was at 6 inches. Just my honest opinion friend :Namaste:

Lol sorry friend but I'm not using a chart someone else made my claims are from factory specifications...the 100w hps bulb I looked at was quoted for 5,950 lumens I generously rounded UP to 6000 the 25w cfls I use are rated at 1,600 lumens each I'll do the math for you 6,000 divided by 1600 = 3.75 cfls how is it that this equals 5? Please show me friend and I do apologize for missing the post where you corrected yourself about the ballast...now onto YOUR 12 inch theory we are talking science and numbers not laying under a hps bulb for an hour and seeing how you FEEL...there is something called the Inverse square law...which is exactly what missbud was speaking of at twice the distance you only receive a fourth of the power from the bulb...so once again from 6 inches to 12 inches is double the distance don't you agree? So with that being said once again I rounded UP to 6,000 ok? Divide 6000 by 4 = 1,500 which is actually 100 lumens LESS then 1 CFL...and I understand your trying to help but get YOUR facts straight

I found another 100w hps that says it puts out around 6,650 lumens but that's still not 5 cfls that pushes it to just over 4 at 4.15 cfls...

Wow you think a 45,000 lumen 400w HPS is equivalent to 8 25w CFLS? Sorry friend but you might want to do some math...it would take around 28.125 CFLS to equal the same lumens as the 400w hps

I've only been feeding her purified bottle water at room temperature i'm thinking of starting veg. Today would Be week 3 since seedling, is that to early to veg her?

If it has been 3 weeks it's already in veg...after about 2 weeks its out of the seedling stage and is in vegative mode...albeit it's basically vegging since day 1 of sprouting but that's consider the seedling stage...

ok ok ok... my presence has been requested
from my research... I found that the highest and lowest amounts of LUX from an 100w HPS bulb to be 8,800... that is a 100w HPS
Now.. I have a 208w CFL fixture DIY of course and I am showing that I am pushing out a wopping 3,450 LUX...

I have a 100w HPS outside under the carport, tonight I will go out with my light meter and check its output, with and without the cover on!!!

the height is supposed to be set by rule of thumb!!! if you can feel the heat from your HPS on the top of the canopy then you want to raise it a little more... if your hand acan sit comfortably under it, then your plants will too!!! I do agree that HPS is way more efficient to use when growing cannabis, but CFL's do the job just fine as well!!! I doubted it til I did it!! now I see that CFL can do some damage on the flowering stages as well!!! along with some BPN of course!!!

I will post again tonight with the numbers that I get from the HPS!!!

:peac2:

I coded them... let me check!!!

6500K 8611= 8/6/2011
2700K 1512= 1/5/2012

they are all at 26w each and I have a total of 8 bulbs!!!

70/30 ratio mixture 5 2700K and 3 6500K ATM!!!

well that number is what is at the top of the plant!!! when I move the sensor like 1/2 inch away then it reads at 2000+ each bulb!!!

I was hoping for answers and input. No right or wrong simply replies.

me and a few people did give suggestions, i suggested getting more light, the more light the better, that other guys suggested 100w hps, another guy suggested CFL's you have alot of routes, what ever one you choose you will have to monitor your plant and notice its growth changes then see if you need more or less light

2 - 100w cfls should be fine if you only intend on growing one plant a few clones.

also Your feeding schedule plan sounds good, give it to the plant like vitamins thats what im doing with my grow! everything looks good over in your neck of the woods!

Edit: when i think of 'light fight' i think of a guy with a 4 ft florescent strip and a guy with a hps ballast going at it in a 50's style type of movie knife fight lol

Nutes:
GREAT PLAN!!! :thumb: now, what I would do is get the micro along with the Grow and Bloom, it contains all the other nutrients that are vital for the plant growth as well!! I also recommend the K-Bud!!! this is the organic bllom booster!!! feeding every other watering is a great idea, but being with organics, it is not necessary, you can't get nute burn with organics!!! that is why it is every feeding!!!

Lighting:
Now thats scary, you are using a 100 watt or a 26 watt equivalent to 100w??? cus 1650 just sounds just like my bulbs... except mine say 1750 LUX

anyways, I am no lighting expert, but for CFL's this journal might help ya!!! I found it an interesting read!!!
CFL Light Tutorial

Hope this helps!!!

:peacetwo: sista!!!

Thanks! This is my first time buying nutes so i want to make sure i get the right stuff! :thankyou:

And as for the lights thats the highest i could find for cfl and each gives about 1650 so i figured that would be best since i cant set up a ballast. Im not sure if they are equivalent to 100w but it sounds like it can get the job done. When she's flowering i figured one light up top pointing down and one light on the bottom pointing up and if necessary then small lights on the side so that no one spot is deprived :)

but my Ph is around 7.1 and all i'm using is purified bottled water. Should i be worried and try to drop it or will nature take its course and bring itself down OR is my Ph tester broken?

Hello there harry! :welcome: to :420:
also welcome to my journal! i just took some pics and i'll be posting them shortly.

To those who have been there from the very emotional stage of germination(:rolleyes3), i am proud to inform you.... SHE HAS ALMOST A FULL SET OF FAN LEAVES!! :yahoo::slide:
Can you believe all it took was a transplant and she's already growing this much! i'm incredibly happy! you will soon have the pleasure of seeing them yourself! :) i'm a proud mama :circle-of-love:

i THINK YOUR BULB IS THE EQUIVALENT of a 100w Incandescent. They are how ever the highest wattage cfls you can buy at homedepot/lowes in the right spectrum so you did good on your lights. I would plan on using more than just a few cfl's. I know you will only have one mother and a few clones but id say your gonna need about 4-6 27w CFLS in your grow area. Like i said before the more CFLS you can fit in your grow area the faster your plant will grow up.

I guess it depends on what kinda bottled water you are using because i tested a 'Poland Springs' water bottle and the pH was 6.0 , I wanna say that 7.1 is a little high and could cause nutrient lock out in your plants. Im not saying it will defiantly happen but you should think about getting some pH Down sold at walmart in the pool section. Get yourself a 5gal bucket so you can mix up your pH'd water solution that way you wont have to keep buying bottled water

Nice job! the container size really dictates how big the plant will be. as soon as you got her into a bigger home those roots started looking for water!

She actually looks like cannabis now instead of just some weird tiny shrub haha. So would now be a good time to start dark periods?
