Glad to see you out and about. I am not steady but the use of a fast shutter with flash allows me to freeze my own movement

nope, 70-300mm lens 36 and 20mm extension tubes and a cheap diopter

The pic above with the diopter made me get closer 8" or so but without it I can get these images pretty far 1-2' or more. That allows me to get closeup without being closeup :cheesygrinsmiley:

I am going to splurge one of these days and get a nice dslr. I was thinking a 5d or 7d.

I am fairly familiar with cameras and stuff but the lenses throw me off. The 70mm-300mm is a telephoto type lens right?
You a nik. or can. guy?

Yes the 70-300mm is a telephoto lens so the rig with the tubes is big but the slower lens means less glass so it is not too heavy. The beauty of using a telephoto with the tubes is you can use a standard flash to light up the subject as you are far enough away to escape lens shadow
