MicroGrowerMan's GroLab: Chasing Godzilla Under The ViparSpectra Sun

I've been trying this too and I keep getting that flash shadow on the bud from the lens. It really isn't easy. I suppose once you find the sweet spot you can make a note of the settings to use again. I would also like to experiment with a speedlight and that's going to be hard to position with the bud still attached to the plant. Idk, it's super challenging.

Note to self - I must get the speedlight out and try to remember how it works! I've been reading a few cannabis photography blogs and they recommend 3 point lighting, and using diffused lighting. I must buy the foamcore.
I've used a Speedlite with Canon, diffuser and bounced off the ceiling and it works great for portraits
Both the flash meter and the TTL meter work well together

Hey MGM and @Roy Growin , here are two experimental shots using the on camera flash with a piece of paper taped over it. I think the trichomes come out nicely. So I have the top light from the LEDs, the diffused flash, and I now need a third point of reflected light to brighten up the shadows a bit I think but not sure. Would have to experiment. What do you think? (Should we start a new thread for photography enthusiasts?)

Good shootin', Carmen. Trichomes are beautiful. That is much better than I have been doing with flash.

Yes, there is a space for photography issues. I think a discussion dedicated to the use of flash and the intricacies of shooting trichomes would make a good thread over in that space.

I'll still do my photo stuff here, and you are free to join in on my trials and tribulations on the photo front. All the others, too.

I think a dedicated flash/trichome thread is cool.

Cool beans. Do you want to start the thread?

I think you are the expert on flash use, @Roy Growin so why don't you go start the thread? I'm sure Carmen will pitch in, and I'll share when I can.

I am weak. I have been sleeping a lot. Napping. Odd hours. Brain fogged. Yesterday's photo sessions really took quite a bit from me. Granted it doesn't much any more.

I'll be around, just conserving time and energy.

I have been really trying to learn how to use my Speedlights. I have both an SB-910 and SB-600. I also used three of my cameras the D-810, Z6 and Z30.

The best results came from the D810 and the SB-910 using the built-in diffuser, a tungsten filter, and and add-on diffuser.

Like this one I posted above:

There are rumors Santa is bringing me a couple of RGB adjustable LED panels with stands and barn doors.

You Can Smell the Aroma of Harvest Right Around The Corner
December 14, 2023

Do-Si-Dos Clones of Plant from Pyramid seeds,
Sold through current sponsor
Seedsman.
Feminized Photoperiod.
Five Plants: Mildred, and her four clones, The Little Sisters of Mildred

Project Name: Mildred, the Bell Cow (Do-Si-Dos)
Feminized Photoperiod.
Germinated: August 23, 2023
Flipped: October 28, 2023
Day 113, Week 6.7 Since Flip

As you can see from the photos, Mildred has been filling out her colas nicely. They are solid varying from 6" to 9" tall, and averaging about 3" in diameter. And they smell oh-so good.

It appears that reducing Cal-Mag to 1/4 tsp a gallon and holding steady with nutes at approximately 3/4 tsp a gallon is doing the plant well.

I have also totally eliminated any Bloom Booster and running straight Miracle-Gro Vegetable & Herb. This stuff contains soy hydrolysates, which seem to have similar functions in a hydro mix as silicates. Very strong buds on stiff stems.

Also she looks like she is ready for an early harvest. Breeder says earliest harvest is 55 days, and I'm under 49 after flip. Getting a lot of golden pistils and amber trichomes. I wonder if putting the plant under weaker light, moving from the @ViparSpectra XS 1500 to XS 1000 triggered an earlier maturity.

l Won't harvest until early next week.

Nutes:
Late Flowering Mix
1/4-tsp Cal Mag/Gallon
3/4-tsp Miracle Gro Vegetable & Herbs/Gallon (18-18-21)
pH Adjusted
900 ppm

Lights:
ViparSpectra XS 1000
100%
16-inches above plants

Project Name: Projects Lawrence, (Do-Si-Dos)
Feminized Photoperiod.
Into Cloner: October 21
Removed from Cloner & Planted: November, 8
Day 36, Flipped December 1, 1 Week into Flip

This is project Lawrence, grown in a 12-gallon pot with a 30% peat/70% perlite mix, with water pH adjusted slightly higher than pure perlite mix in project MGM in the 3-gallon pot with pure perlite. The adjustment is to allow for the acidity of the peat.

So far the transition is working well, going from the 3-gallon pot for early veg in pure perlite to this new mix in the big pot.

She has not yet reached the limits of her growing circle, so will not be allowed to grow upward, yet.

Nutes:
Mid-Veg Mix
1/4-tsp Cal Mag/Gallon
3/4-tsp Miracle Gro Vegetable & Herbs/Gallon (18-18-21)
pH Adjusted to 6.5
900 ppm
Auto Watered 4x a day.

Lights:
ViparSpectra XS 1500
100%
24-inches above plants

Project Name: Projects MGM, (Do-Si-Dos)
Feminized Photoperiod.
Into Cloner: October 21
Removed from Cloner & Planted: November, 8
Day 36, Flipped December 1, 1 Week into Flip

Project MGM has reached the limits of her growing circle and will now be trained into 7 upward colas. Each one is easily identifiable right now.

I will have to do some adjustment to the radial trellis, since they are not evenly spaced. It is simply a matter of drilling some new holes in the pot and adjusting the lateral branches.

Nutes:
Mid-Veg Mix
1/4-tsp Cal Mag/Gallon
3/4-tsp Miracle Gro Vegetable & Herbs/Gallon (18-18-21)
pH Adjusted to 6.0
900 ppm
Auto Watered 24x a day.

Lights:
ViparSpectra XS 1500
100%
24-inches above plants

Another Reason to Upgrade Lights & Improve Ventilation
The Amnesia Trance and the two LSOM Do-Si-Dos seed breeding clones are tag-alongs to this journal. A few pics.

That is it for today. I am tired and need to rest up for a big trip this weekend.

Thank you for your support, and for following along!

Gorgeous photos. The project clones are both looking great. I really like that top photo of Mildred. That to me is a plant of the month contender.

I entered an earlier version in PLOM, thought it had more color. But this one, with the trim and slightly lower angle does show more of the structure of the plant, the radial trellis, and the Seven Sisters manifolding I use ... more of the PLANT!!!

You have a good point, Carmen. There is no changing out photos during the month in the PLOM contest, though

Shine On, Harvest Moon
December 21, 2023

No, not the one up in the sky. But all those little harvest moons that have gone nearly all cloudy, with just a hint of amber. This is just about the way I like my Do-Si-Dos.

A few final photos of Mildred before harvest. She may not have been tall, but she sure was thick. Thick in the bud, and thick with trichomes.

Lawrence came over later in the day, and we chopped the old girl down.

More in just a bit. Thank you for following.

Germinated: August 23, 2023
Flipped: October 28, 2023
Day 120, Week 7.7 Since Flip

Just four more chopping days until Christmas!

So we decided today was the day. Six of the seven sister colas turned out well, with average wet weight around 80 grams. If we get between a third and a quarter of that dried that would mean a harvest between 4 and 6 ounces from the 2x2 growing footprint -- or 1 to 1.5 ounces a square foot under 150w, @ViparSpectra XS1500 lights

We gained quite a few notes for the development of the comparative grow between Lawrence and I. More about those plants in another post. For now this is Mildred's show.

Sizing things up, each of the colas sprouted 3 to 4 side branches, which produced well. Going forward with taller plants that are allowed to develop further than Mildred prior to flipping should help us yield more. We should know more after drying.

Here is what the harvest looked like.

The seventh sister grew very small, likely due to lack of development in earlier stages of growth. Something to be mindful of with our Little Sisters of Mildred comparative grow between Lawrence and myself.

And finally here they are hanging. I'll keep the room at 60% humidity for the first day, and drop by 5% a day until I get down to 50%. I humidify my whole grow room, with no worries of bud rot, simply because there is nothing to rot, and the heat in the cabinets does drive humidity down to acceptable levels.

I suspect we'll be bottling in five days.

Thank you for following. I'll be back with the rest of the grow in a day or two.

The main event is right around the corner.
