Melville's Doug's Varin Winter Grow

I almost always try. I'm kinda hit or miss with clones.
I'm growing an aloe vera (as of a month ago) so I'm going to try using it's gel as a cloning compound.
The only two methods that have worked for me have been dipping the stem into cloning powder and then straight into a jiffy pod on a windowsill, and once I just stuck the cutting into a glass of water and stuck it under a window. I changed the water every couple of days, and 3 weeks later she started shooting out roots.

I have about a 50% success rate with the pods, 1% glass of water, and 0 with anything else, lol.

I kinda prefer seeds. Something about those tiny little plants popping up out of the soil.
Hey @Melville Hobbes hope your having a good day.
I have a foolproof method of cloning in my Gorilla Glue thread tutorial.
Check it out, never run out of ladies again.

I think seeds produce a far superior plant. I unfortunately don’t have access to seeds like you guys do. Hopefully if my Herbies Seeds get here that will change.

My strike rate is really good with clones. However I’m concerned with the clones I have taken from my Mimosa. They have looked odd. Like totally revegging and stressed looking.

My favourite way to clone is to monstercrop because it’s so challenging. I have been striking plants my whole adult life so it’s a concept I pretty much understand.

That's great T.
I outline a foolproof method there for members that are having difficulty in that thread.
It's 99% foolproof.
Lots of good info on potting and uppotting and air pots also. :thumb:

My only experience with monstercropping was with some plants from reg seeds. I needed to sex them before getting them outside to stay within the legal plant count. Indoors I'm not too concerned as I can only fit so many plants in my tent anyway.
After I had culled the males and revegged the females I put them outside, and damned if those weren't the bushiest plants I've ever grown. No topping and I still had 16 tops on one plant.
I've considered doing it again, but that month of reveg kinda made me rethink using that method of sexing plants again. Especially since I can get a similar number of tops, or more, with training.

Thanks Bill. If I do decide to try to clone the top I'll have a look through that thread again.

It’s so annoying here. It’s still illegal to grow.

How many plants can you have legally?

We are heading in the right direction, you are starting to see dispensary’s here and there so it’s only a matter of time.

Four. They were going to set a one metre height limit too, but luckily the Senate dropped that. There was pressure to get them to limit it to four female plants, and no limit on male plants, but they decided against that. They said if you want 4 guaranteed female plants just buy feminized seeds.
I hope your gov't can see what's happening here, and that the sky won't fall just because they aren't charging people for doing what they're already doing.

I really should sort my shit out and grow a 4 plant grow. 2 flower and 2 veg. I end up with too many, I am constantly starting plants for people who can’t keep them alive lollll.

I’m sure they will. We have dispensaries that charge $150 for 10g!

The LPs here who were thinking they could get away with those kind of prices had a bit of a rude awakening once the initial surge in demand died down.
Every week the price drop section of the OCS website has a new offering.

Just looked up the most expensive bud on the OCS, and it's $17.13 a gram! The cheapest is $3.57!
Most people won't pay more than $10. Especially with home growing these days.
BTW, CAD$1=AUS$1.08, so pretty close to par.

Ontario Cannabis Store. They're the government retailer. All the dispensaries have to get their products from them. Like I said, most people won't pay more than $10 a gram, and a lot of it is selling for less. The black market price is really low now.

I clipped off the crispy leaves, so the crosses are looking a little cleaner. Looks like the feeding I gave them yesterday is helping too. As planned I raised the light a couple of cm. I'm still wondering if I should wait to top or not. I'll pull DV out of the tent for a closer look at her structure and make a decision tomorrow just before lights off.

I'm also thinking about upgrading my light a bit. Would be nice to have one with an on/off switch, lol.

She's ready to top. I can see it in the first pic from today, now I just have to sort out which side branches I want to spread. I'm thinking of topping at the fourth node, spread the upper two my usual way, experiment with the carhooks to train the branches just under those to two of the four gaps, and if the bottom set of branches are developed/developing well enough do the same to the last two gaps, if not just remove them.

Edit: Whoops, meant to mention, I'll probably be up-potting her to her final 3 gallon fabric pot in about two weeks.

Are two of your plants autos and one a, omg I forget what you call them, it starts with ph and it means you have to change your light schedule to 12:12 to make her flower. Phenomenon or something.

Photoperiod? They all are, but I've been giving the other two 11/13 from seed to get them to flower, and out of the tent so I can focus on the Doug's Varin. I got high, and paranoid about my germination conditions when I couldn't get some of the DV seeds to sprout. Up until this grow I've been spoiled with a 99% germination rate. When one of the seeds from this pack sprouted it sent it's taproot straight into the air, and two others failed to grow. So I put the crosses in with the DV seeds to check that I wasn't cooking them, or had them too cold or something. If I had been sober I wouldn't have thought 6 was a good number, if I had even decided to do it at all, lol.

Hey Melville, the DV's are coming along nicely. Have you had the pleasure of her before?

Cheers for that Bill. Altho I have tried once (and failed) to clone, I bookmarked your link for future reference.

That's interesting. I have never grown a clone before, what sort of difference would you get?

That happened to me twice in recent grows, quite disappointing to witness and then waste some more time waiting to see if it can recover before soaking another precious seed. I'd say I share @Trala's seed accessibility situation. It is great you don't need to worry about that.

No, this is the first time I've had the opportunity to grow DV, and I've never seen any available here in Ontario. As far as I can tell it's almost impossible to get outside of California.
I was looking at seedbanks to find a couple of strains and stumbled across @Weed Seeds Express and while I was looking through their list I saw DV. I immediately checked out their rep online and decided to grab a couple of packs.
While I was checking them out I saw that they were a site sponsor here, so I decided to join to make a grow journal here when I started to grow them, as I couldn't find any growing info on it other than the speculation that it would be a standard sativa. When I started the journal I noticed that @InTheShed and @Virgin Ground had started a joint journal.

Glad to have you along. Hopefully NZ and Aus will join the party soon, and you'll be able to get seeds more easily.

It'll be really interesting how they turn out. I saw Shed and VG were growing DV also. I have used @Weed Seeds Express too and found them to be fantastic, especially for downunder.

I got some Skywalker OG for the upcoming outdoor season at the same time as the DV seeds. I was actually quite happy with how up to date the tracking was. Sometimes I can't get any clear idea where my packages are until they reach Canada, but this time I could see pretty much every step of the way.
They also cleared customs faster than usual, so all in all a good experience. I'll likely order from them again.
