Max's First Grow - Soil - LED - Painkiller XL

Yea, she'll probably bounce right back. I always use an organic feed just for the roots when I repot. Just to help with the shock. You can check out my journal in my link. And see what big bloom can do to perk them up.

I hope you realise I wasn't calling you a noob ;-) My hope is that other first time growers like me can find my journal instructive. I've learned valuable lessons from my mistakes and will be in a better place for the next grow. I'll go subscribe to your journal now and see if there's more I can learn.

I know you wasn't max. But I am a noob lol. Was just throwing in my 2cents lol. No worries bub

Is that by Old Timer or is it something else? I got Old Timer Grow and Old Timer Bloom. I'd have thought I wanted Grow at this stage rather than Bloom, or do you know a secret trick that involves Bloom at the veg stage when up potting?

Wonderingly,

Big bloom is by foxfarms. Just google it. You will see its not for flower its for all stages. Don't let the name fool ya. Npk is like 0.01-0.3-0.7. It feeds the microbes in your soil

She's looking good Max.
The Hemp Protein bucket served you well, I'll miss seeing it around :bravo:

My humidity was down to 32% the other day so I half-fillled a 5 gallon bucket with water, tied a string around a bath towel, dunked it in the water and tied the string to a hook in the ceiling directly over the bucket and raised the towel up out of the water. It has brought it up to ~45% which I can live with in veg.

4 Week Update

It's that time again folks - the weekly update. The star of the show, XL#1, is 28 days old. BB#1 is 24 days old and XL#3 is 20 days old.

Let's take a look how they're doing

XL#1 is filling her 5 gallon pot nicely

BB#1 is very likely in need of up potting from her 1 gallon fabric pot

XL#3 has had a huge growth spurt and catching up with gusto. If you recall she is in a 5 gallon plastic pot

...and lastly - a close up of the temperature & RH. A couple of chilli plants are in there to germinate too

I believe BB#1 is ready for a new pot because she drinks the pot completely dry in a day. I should really get round to that today. The plan is to drop the 1 gallon fabric pot into another fabric pot of the 5 gallon variety and let the roots grow through into the bigger home.

Somehow I've kept XL#3 alive and flourishing - watering has been a sparse and careful process due to jumping her straight from the seedling pot to a 5 gallon affair. Watering is being done in a circular fashion with a small measuring jug.

None of the plants have been fed yet; the soil is rich and they have been up potted into lots of fresh soil. Before long XL#1 will start getting some Old Timer Grow (once I've read the feeding guide for this product).

Yesterday I moved the lights much higher in order to get the plants to stretch a little. I'd like to play with LST but they are so short and bushy that I wouldn't know where to start. Am I right in aiming to get them to elongate a little by raising the light? The other thing I am considering is to switch the lights back to Grow only (switch off the Bloom setting). Node spacing is incredibly tight on these girls.

I'll do nothing apart from water until I hear from our resident experts.

Regards

Day 29 - First Feed

As promised; BB#1 got up potted to a 5 gallon fabric pot.

Between them the girls got 2l of water containing their first ever half strength feed and half strength CalMag. 0.5ml of each per 1l of water.

Some time was spent playing with XL#1 to see where LST could be applied, but she appears to be naturally spreading outwards and staying short. I say naturally, but she was topped a bit back.

I have absolutely no idea where to start with LST on XL#1. I've read lots of guides but it seems to apply to lankier plants. I'll post pictures after work this evening.

Day 37 Update

Hi all,

It's time for a long overdue update on the grow. Things have been hectic of late and my favourite hobby of reading journals has fallen by the wayside.

The obligatory pictures... to get a sense of scale it is 32" of solid canopy from the front leaf to the back leaf and each plant is 12" tall

So what's been happening in the tent I hear you cry. I'm glad you asked. XL#1 has been getting a bit of LST, but frankly I haven't got a clue. The others are au naturel - completely unfidgetted with; no topping, no LST, no anything.

Odour has become a big issue the last couple of days. Spending extra on a bigger carbon filter has proven to be useless. Either the fan is sucking air too quickly through the filter or I've been sold a dud. Here in the UK suppliers know we can't complain or return defective items that smell strongly of weed.

I know it's not escaping directly from the tent as there's negative pressure - the tent walls suck in when the fan is on.

In other news, the bits for the SCRoG will be here tomorrow and I'm thinking I should build a screen and start trying to train that way. The girls are way bushier with tighter nodes than the plants I see in LST and SCRoG guides, but XL#3 has spaced out a little since the lights were raised.

Should I build a screen at the current height of the canopy and start training, or should I do it an inch (or more) shorter? In all the guides it looks simple, but when I look how amazingly bushy and squat the gals are I get a bit lost.

I'm not sure if you can tell from the pictures, but I'm also the proud father of 5 x one inch high chilli seedlings :-)

For no readily apparent reason, I thought to flip them on 1st February - but they are growing big already, so if time permits I may do this in the next few days. Hopefully I'll have a bit more time once I've figured odour control - this isn't something I can ignore. As it is I can't have visitors and I think the police may visit at some point to talk more about the burglary. They may have turned a blind eye the first time but if the house stinks of weed they may feel compelled to take it further. So odour control is this weeks top priority.

May your gardens be green and your girls' fragrance limited to your grow room.

Any chance of turning the fan speed down, to increase the length of time air is in contact with the carbon in the filter? What I can say for sure is my Black-Ops 4 inch filter and (can't remember brand) 4 inch fan is enough to keep the smell in and the exhaust air nearly weed smell free.

Love the nice thin leaves on that girl in the front, compared to the indicas in the back. Looks like you could shave with 'em.

Edit: make that cut a steak instead, who ever heard of shaving with a serrated razor...

I can tell you with 100% confidence that if you can vent to the OUTSIDE of your house your order problem will be gone. I ran flexible 6" tubing from the filter to a window and boxed it in with insulation board until spring when I can maker it permanent.
Everything is coming along nicely Max. Good to hear from you.

+reps for the fan speed idea - that has crossed my mind too. I've been overthinking fan speed control after hearing some cause a humming noise and burn the fan out much quicker. I've not been able to source a variac yet and may go for a cheaper option. The fan wasn't expensive but variacs are.

Yeah, the Painkiller XL has much thinner leaves than the Blueberry. Both are beautiful in their own way. The girls are looking very healthy at the moment. I'm trying to figure out how to train them at the moment.

+reps for venting outside.. it's not something I can figure out right now without drilling big holes in the wall or ceiling :-/

Yeah, but depending on what's outside some people's houses, it might be even more of a problem than keeping the smell inside the house, or tent. For me, my grow space is in an unfinished basement with the only two outside windows close to other houses. If I just vented straight outside and they opened their windows I'm betting I'd have a response involving sirens. :)
