Mars-Hydro LED Grow Light Discussion

I have just purchased the Mars II 1200. I haven't had a heat issue yet with my HID's. After some reading about these lights and the issues they may cause. Will it void my warranty or do damage to the unit if I were to build a hood for the light that drew air/heat away from the LED light fixture. The hood would sit on top with a 6" port to hook to my 240 CFM fan.

Thanks in advanced

If not had heat issue with HID lighting, I be surprised if have issue with the Mars 2

I have my mars 2 1200 in a 4'X4' tent, and 435 cfm exhaust fan exhausting the tent running at probably about 25% max(variable speed controller) and it normally about 5-8 degrees (if that) warmer then room.

Oh man I am so glad to hear this as that is what my 1200 is going into is a 4x4 tent. I have a 430 CFM that fan that draws the air out of the top of the tent. I too have a speed controller on my exhaust fan.

So I guess I don't have a problem after all.

Thanks Crawdaddy

PS
My 600w HID is air cooled.

Yea that the one difference that may cause issues for those using supplemental CO2, as no air cooled hood you are venting directly from tent.

I bet you could DIY an 'air cooled' hood for the LEDs and work great, most(>90%) of the heat comes out from the fans at top.

I am an old machinist and have access to a laser. I may design a hood and have it lasered and welded to where it just slips over the top. 90% of the heat gone would be good.

I would like to see how that works out if you do it, you never know maybe sell prototype to Sara and she can make more and sell them :)

Hey Sara (and others!),

I run low height SCROG setups with great success, see a few attached pics - all using 400 & 600 HPS. The only option I have for the next setup is a tent called 'grocell pyramid', it's a 1200 x 1200 x 1200 dome, I've done some CAD models to give me some approx dimensions to ensure I can get at least 350 - 400mm (approx 14- 16inches) to the top of the canopy (allowing 200mm or 8inches for the canopy max flower height), I've spent weeks reading, scouring through threads, grows and find it hard to come up with some solid evidence that any LED will be suitable... anyone have some input for me?

As you can see;
- I can't change the size of the dome
- Need to get as much light in there for the budget (which is around 2 x 96x3, and a third ordered for another veg tent)
- It would appear the MARS range @ 5w would be too intense from what I've read
- 2 x 96x3 is about all I can squeeze in, but very mixed opinions with the amount of power draw vs space, it would appear a MARS II 1.2 would be the ultimate choice, but obviosuly this won't fly with this setup.
- Should I not even bother with LED and look into CMH!!?

Anyone else running the same w/per sq ft (approx 21.8wpsqft @ the plug), how it going!?

:thanks:

I'm not 100% sure about the Mars II series, but with the reflector type the fans on the top pull air into the case and it blows out via the vents on the sides. This is the most effecient cooling method, so I would guess the Mars II is the same. If that is the case, you would want to leave the top open and place a cap around the sides to pull the air out... not over the top.

So that's where batteries come for.

Hey Hosebomber - not sure if your poast was aimed at me but I can allow a small space around the edge of the unit, the extraction will plug onto my current system so I think this should be ok, full tent air change will occur about every minute or two so no real chance for major heat buildup, could always swap it round in summer if needed, but 350w@the plug shouldn't get anywhere near as hot as say a MII 1.2, from what I've read, I would image it could output approx the heat of a 250hps but without the radiating heat, I've got a 250 HPS which currently works fine in a 900 x 600 x 900 ( w/d/h ).

I just put my hand on top of my 96X3 and it blowing out the fans.

I just read all 291 pages of this thread and now need to send Sara an email. Love everyone's great journals and these lights look to be a great addition to my room. Going to start out with 4 of the mars 2 1200's to start and if they work as advertised I will add another 4. I will start a journal when the lights get here. Sara you have an email incoming.

welcome NorCaRider, I will reply you very fast, I am here now:)
