Maine 4-Season Greenhouse Grow

Yeah - these guys are like fruit flies but a much fatter body and they do more crawling than flying - but they seem to like any damp soil - they were one reason why I got rid of the bins, but then I missed them, the worms not the flies!!! I think as soon as the weather gets warmer I'll move them outside and see what happens.
I found by simplifying the inputs it kept things much easier...my first year I had fruit flies everywhere. With the current inputs there are zero bugs or odor. I also throw in all our dryer lint.

Highya BH, gj,

When I had a worm bin in the cellar, I'd feed with kitchen scraps run through a large food processor. Never had any trouble. Kept the worms alive and multiplying. Might help with food not sitting on the top of the dirt.

Have you started with baby ladies for the GH, or tunnel hoop house? Cheers

Yeah - the damn flies showed up about 5 years ago and they seem to wax and wane. Fruit flies are a lot easier to deal with than these pests but I'll soldier on....
Hmmmm, new babies - I have a whole slew of sprouted green, just a bunch of scrappy seeds, some intentional as experiments and other that just sprouted in the compost bin. They are all just for practice and experimentation - training, topping, etc. but I may end up keeping them going...I'm still new enough at this that I find it hard to let them go!!

Yeah - the scrap is always well buried, but I will try a better bin with a tighter lid and the drier lint idea. I'm thinkin' that when the weather turns better I will move them out and use a black or clear cover and solarize the little buggers - the worms will go deeper and if I give them little blasts of heat maybe fry their feeble little brains!!!

I drilled holes in the side near the top so air can move as necessary. also holes in the bottom for excess water to drain. I mentioned this, because flies could have come in and out. The lid was tight, though. I was told the whole system needs air to come and go at will. But, it worked for me. Cheers

Oh, so you're the culprit!! lol. Just kidding. Well, my forecast was recently updated at 2-4 inches, with starting out rain. I had to cover up the woodpile again. Thought we were almost done with wood! Be safe! Cheers

It must be the season - the circulating pump just quit in the shop so all my seedlings are now moved to my basement - it's going to be chilly out there until the sun comes out again, lately that is about 1.5 days a week. The solar panels keep it nice and toasty but that is sunshine dependent!! I am trying to nurse this poor old leaky system thru until summer then decide if I'm too old to build a new furnace, cut 8 - 10 bush cords of wood, keep my poor ol' 39 Ford 9N running or just install a decent electric furnace and put ALL my energy into growing good weed!!!

Highya guys,

You're right, BH. I forgot about that, lol. I'm hoping this will be the last of it. Can't hurt to hope!.

Mr. greenjeans - Wow, that's a tough one. We're almost to spring, so not much time left to limp home. I remember that same scenario on my first grows. I now only grow outside in the summer, for the whole year. Wood - we burn wood exclusively. Use about 6 cord a year for heat. I don't know the cost vs a gas boiler, but I love wood heat. Cheers
