Maine 4-Season Greenhouse Grow

That's just why I wouldn't build a house for someone. I'd run into the one first off who wouldn't be pleased, no matter what. I don't know what's up with that.

Maybe emotions have no place in business. It was like that with me. Once, my emotions got the best of me, and I ushered a stubborn lady right out the front door. Only one in 11 years, lol. Takes all kinds. Cheers

Well, it's a beautiful sunny morning here with highs expected of 54F...and they are calling for 5-8" of snow tomorrow...and 3-5" day after...wtf?

There is spring in Maine and there is climate chaos...and there is the convergence of the two...which results in a hot mess.

Woke up to snow this morning....more on the way. Quit sending it this way blew
We had a dusting Saturday morning, but it burned right off...looking at 6-10" in the next three days....coming up from the Gulf of Mexico....

Snow day here...

Great quote from an article on conspiracy theories with zero evidence ("a lot of people say...")

“it is not enough, in this war of hoaxes and delusions and perpetuated lies, to be merely honest. It is necessary also to be wise.”

Same playbook, different century....

Lmfao i am one of those needing a handy for that 5th Star. I never give out perfect reviews.
So here's my question...when you read other reviews, do you frown on 4-stars or do you think 5-star reviewers are clueless?

I generally give less than a 5-star review if there are more than 1 basic thing I think could have (and would have) been done better by me. If I could cook it better, clean it better, present it better, etc. When I see excellence in (some but not necessarily all) areas I reward it....I hope to encourage and inspire them to continue the good work.

I'm just wondering if the next generation has other ideas....

Are you serious UA or just looking for a handy? What would it hurt giving a perfect review? I also do rentals and those reviews mean a lot to potential guests. I have mostly 5 star reviews and I do very well with my rentals. Just curious about why you wouldnt give 5 stars. Have you ever rented a house for vacation? All 5 star reviews may actually seem fishy so some 4's are really ok.

:passitleft:

I spend weeks, if not months, staying in hotels. I rarely review anything. 3 or 4 reviews in the last few years.

In order to get 5 stars, it would have to be exceptional. The reality is, most places aren’t, and they shouldn’t be getting 5 stars. A well run service orientated experience is 4 stars, that’s their job, it’s what I pay for. Go above and beyond for 5, that’s the whole idea behind it, people want 5 star facilities to be exceptional.

When I am surprised by the level of service or quality, then I may be motivated to give a review, or conversely if it was a terrible experience.

A proper 4 star review, outlining what made the experience great, is what I give.

Hotels and vacation rentals is like comparing apples and oranges. You should try it sometime! Just realize that us little guys really appreciate 5 star reviews and no, you're not getting a 5 Star experience in the sense that you may at a very fine hotel, again it's apples and oranges. Review is based on cleanliness, how well home is stocked, how well it's represented in the ads, etc...

Also, I cannot offer Handys in order to get an extra star.

Totally agree, and we strive to always impress and surprise....we have a background in hospitality and know what people expect (cleanliness, hair dryer, microwave, good sheets, towels, etc) but we also know how to impress (stuffed animals with a welcome note for their child, farm eggs/jelly, picnic baskets and beach blankets, etc)....our average guest review is 50 words, which is a lot comparatively...people take the time to elaborate how impressed they were with the little things (which is what makes it 5-star). My gripe is with the one guy who says all the same things in his review (as the other 63/65 5-star reviews) and gives it a 4-star. Odds are he is a douche in life....and the majority opinion rules....but it still rubs me.

And my condolences to you for having to spend all those months in hotels....because you are right...most of them are bare minimum.

I am similar to UA. I rarely review.....unless something was either exceptionally bad or exceptionally good. I take into consideration what I am reviewing relative to the cost and location etc. Prior to my back injury I was a road warrior...on the road 250+ days a year. I generally used 3 star as my baseline relative to those factors above. Obviously if I am working in Lincoln Maine, there isn't going to be much of a selection in eating or dining. So I expect modest accommodations in their little hotel with basic cleanliness for the baseline 3 star evaluation. From there it can move up or down one star with something being done very well....service...comfort....quality, whatever. Rarely do things ever rate what I feel like is a 5 star review. I am a bit of a perfectionist so I grade hard. Effort goes a long way. Doesn't take much to show a customer you care and his or her satisfaction is important. Sadly I find so many places (insert larger towns and cities with lots of franchise places) are extremely lacking that one basic thing.....effort.

We were shopping all day recently (something we rarely do) and we wanted to eat after the last store and didn't feel like cooking. We walked into an Olive Garden which was packed and had a 50 min wait. Well I wasn't waiting 50 minutes with a hungry family so we went next door to an empty TGI Friday. Needless to say for as dead as it was....I should have known that was the first queue that the quality there would be lacking. Service was slow and when the server finally brought it out....terrible is about the only way I would describe it. Now I have worked in the food service industry, both sides....and no way in hell even in a chain restaurant like that would I have either plated those dishes nor would have carried them through the dinning room and placed them on a table. They dropped from a 3 star to a 2 star to a 1 star real quick with that blatant lack of caring or trying and earned a 'will never frequent ever again' from me. I don't generally feel the need to post the negative reviews unless its just complete lack of effort.

On the flip side, every once in a while I find a place that just blows my mind. One place was a little cajun joint in Columbia Tennessee. I almost didn't eat there cause they wanted me to take my hat off in order to eat in the dining room and I had finished a long 12 hour shift and was filthy but starving and didn't want to take my hat off. They let me eat in the bar with the hat on thankfully because its probably my top restaurant ever for cajun food (and I lived in New Orleans for 4 years). I ordered crawfish etouffee as an Appetizer (its my baseline for determining if you know what you are doing in a kitchen as a cajun chef). Man.....all I could think after the first bit was "GOD DAMN THATS GOOD". I ordered the stuffed flounder (another dish I am picky on) and was again blown away. Started talking to the couple after their dinner rush was over and they were a great couple, moved up after Katrina (from New Orleans) and decided to give the restaurant business a try. His wife asked him to make her a muffaletta sandwich...which he did (a monster by the way). She ate half of it and asked if we wanted her other half. I am not a fan of olives so I was going to be polite and take one bite and feign that I was full from the dinner. But I took one bite and looked at my co-worker who was looking at me with the same dumbfounded look of "how can this be that freaking good". Needless to say I inhaled my quarter as did my buddy. We came back the next two nights we were there and ate at the bar again (with my hat on). The food was good enough that when Ms Stank and I went down to the Smoky Mountains on vacation that I seriously considered the 5 hour drive each way for a dinner. I left a review on them....including letting people know to be prepared to remove their hats or be exiled to the bar....but it was a 5 star review that was very thorough and detailed.

I am a bit of a perfectionist so I grade hard.
I think many here have a bit of that in their personality...I certainly do to a point where it is (almost) a flaw...I'll wake up in the middle of the night and think how I should/could done it better...owning your business amps it up a notch and very few business owners "leave it at work". Hence, I can be a pretty discerning customer...I am the same way...realistic expectations but also there is always a baseline minimum. I love, love, love to be impressed because you only get one life and filling it with superb, versus mediocre, experiences is the point (why we all grow great, not ok, cannabis ;)) I love to alert others in a review so they can have an equally amazing experience. Plus, I think excellence should be rewarded.

I agree......excellence. But seems like these days, people want 5 stars for just showing up and not killing their customers. I can't tell you how many people I recommended that restaurant to LOL. I will go back there, even if thats the whole reason for the trip! There is another restaurant that I liked almost as much. If you are ever in Washington DC....check out Ol' Ebbits Grill. The crabcakes are amazing (and thats a dish I do very well and grade ultra hard) and everything I have ever tried has been amazing. Its pricey and always packed....which I hate, but if I am in DC.....I make it a point to go there. But the places that impress me are few and far between it seems. In my eyes many people have taken the minimal approach in life.....do the absolute minimum necessary in order to get by.

Who is John Galt? :)

My dad always said..."if it were easy, everyone could do it"....too true...but to me that is the essential necessity of a public rating system...to acknowledge and reward excellence and call out mediocrity (or worse)...
