I bought 15,000 dollars worth of LEDs in 2015/2016. It was my business partners decision. They were from a company name Black Dog based out of Colorado. The first thing that happened was my yield plummeted. Then the lights started failing, one after the next. They had a 10 year warranty, but the company doesn't respond to my emails. I have been trying since 2017. Unless some cocksucker politician FORCES me to use LEDs, with a law, I can't see ever using them again. I WAS interested in perhaps experimenting with one, its been a few years, maybe the tech has improved, but I WILL NOT be experimenting with LED lighting at top dollar ever again. The lights destroy themselves quickly attempting to dissipate the heat and the wattage conversion is based on VISIBLE light. That 500 watt is really a thousand watt light fuzzy math used by lighting manufacturers. My 750 watt light (150x5 watt Cree LED diodes) wasn't anywhere NEAR the 1500 watt metal halides that they were replacing. They yielded like a thousand watt light would. Which is 33% less than they were advertised as output. So I am now skeptical and cynical concerning LED lighting. I took my last ones down about one year ago today. But I am curious if there are durable and reliable LEDs. I really liked that they put off less heat but it came with too high if a price for me. I can't afford to play around like that. If you're growing in a tent, for your head, LEDs are probably the best bet. Otherwise...I can build a 1500 watt HID (metal halide or HPS) for 160.00 and the cost of a bulb. If you're a brand new grower you'll need a reflector too. That's it. And they last for years. But I'm not giving up hope on LEDs the price just needs to come down from the stratosphere.

Hey @nomdeplume420 I'm Jon and I feel you all the way. Awesome post. However, I believe I may be able to help if you wish to have a light discussion in conversations cuz we'd be discussing primarily non sponsored lights. Your call. Happy to talk LED with you if you want just send me a conversation thingie and I'll respond. If you like. And yeah, Black Dog is the most overrated LED on earth and the most overpriced I know of for the quality it provides. I checked them out thoroughly and went a different direction. Just my two cents. Not all LEDs produce that level of heat btw. I may have some good suggestions for you if you wanna rap. Peace.

That is one weird ass looking plant. Did you reveg it or something? Very interesting. What seed company if it's a sponsor?

I ended up topping the plant about 7-8 times and after the 6th time it started freaking out and started growing like it was 2 plants.. Have come across dozens and dozens of extremely weird mutants over the last 12 years. Non sponsored company soo not going to list the name, however it was a difficult strain to germinate, almost all the seeds took over 14 days to germinate, and of the seeds I got from harvesting the strain, I have not been able to get any of those to germinate. It has still to this date been my best harvest but I believe it had more to do with the strong genetics of the JH rather than the breeder. That single plant was over a pound, and the other 6 totaled roughly 2 pounds, all under 4 viparspectra V600’s, which actual draw on that model light is 315 watts X 4 lights = 1260 watts actual draw with a yield of 3 pounds, brings out to just over 1 gram per watt, for an led 5 years ago, is pretty damn impressive.

For what it’s worth, @ViparSpectra stands behind their product, first hand experience, I had a light fail on the bloom side, I reached out to customer support and they worked with me about diagnosing the light given my electronic and mechanical experience, they gave me permission to open the light under warranty and inspect what the issue was, I was able to determine both drivers functioned properly and that the issue was in the led board itself, if it was a matter of a driver they were going to ship me a driver to swap out myself to get back up and running sooner, pretty standup if you ask me, instead I needed to send the light to a repair facility in my country, didn’t have to send it back overseas, my light was shipped out, fixed and returned within a 2 week period. Fortunately I was able to borrow a couple V300’s from a buddy while waiting soo didn’t hurt my yield, but it goes to show that they actually care about the end user and not just about the bottom dollar like most internet companies, and the response time was awesome, I typically had to wait a day per email response but that’s a given due to the time zone difference.

I'm in the contest for their current light! I'd love to check that out. I researched it very thoroughly and in my humble opinion, without seeing it, it's ViparSpectra's best light by far. The spectrum is super solid, the footprint compares favorably with lights that are much more expensive, it has the requisite LEDs and drivers you really want to have, and it has a great dimmer. Full spectrum bar light, and again imho bar lights are where it's at for LEDs. I find it amazing they can put this light out at the price they want for it, it's great. I would even buy a new 4x4 to try it if I won, rather than use it in my 5x5, cuz it's designed for a 4x4 and I'd want to test it properly as it was intended. I'm with you all the way man. You are one of many who speak very favorably about the company.
