For 'slowing' down that growth , just keep SCing those leaders...just enough to slow that particular branch down. That will also help the smaller , side branches get some girth and strength too OK. If you gently squeeze a leader about an inch or two down from it's apex, that will help a lot. What i like to do is to roll the tip or area between your thumb and forefinger , just to warm it up some, then squeeze it until you feel the internal membrane break...then just gently lay it over on a 90 degree angle ...NOT pointing down (too much damage and too hard to recover)just level. This will slow that branch down some OK. The trick is to SC very green or fresh areas , NOT woody areas way down on an established branch...that is NOT SCing , but a 'mistake' OK. Know what i mean?
