KJ's T5/CFL 1st Time Grow

I think these plants are root bound in the 5 gallon grow bags. I bet when I harvest, I'll find a huge amount of roots

Hey Karl, I've got some input on the rascal! Let me say first though, you looked at my first grow, FIRST. I don't have too much knowledge but heres what I've noticed with the rascal.. like you said above.. Dude, these plants grow quick as hell right? Im thinking you have a shit ton of roots my dude. How full are the bags filled up? I have my one rascal in a 5 gal but I have it filled to maybe, 3 1/4 gallons give or take.. I did let her get pretty dried out before watering aswell, waiting 2-3 sometimes 4 days. I don't know how far back you went in the journal but with the rascal I had gotten back from a 5 day vacation with my rascal being watered right before I left.. Major yellowage crispy yuck.. I defoled all that BS and she came back good as new, still some yellowing though! I'll get you some pictures of her asap!

How much defol have you been doing? I went very hard on all my plants, they seemed to like it.

Fraction wise, how are you feeding the rascals? EX. 1/4 strength, 1/2, 3/4 per gallon. I noticed they really enjoy nutes.. a lot.. I was feeding rascal full strength the last 4-5 feeds..

Is there any way to pull a girl out and get her out of the HPS for a picture, maybe an overall and some close ups? Kinda want to see what you re dealing with! I'll go try to take some pictures now bud!

CA215, thanks for the reply!

I'm running 5 gallon grow bags which are very close to the shape of a 5 gallon bucket and the soil is real close to the top, maybe 2 or 3".

When I had 24" plants in a 3 gallon bucket with 2 gallons of soil, it was VERY root bound! That's why I planted them high up in the 5 gallon bags.

I haven't done any defoilation since flowering, near 8 weeks now. I've been running 100% nutes since about the start of flowering. I'm using the GH Flora nutes + GH KoolBloom the last few weeks.

I was watering about every 4 days, but I'm going to have to do every 2 days now, because they aren't holding much water. I'm mixing 8 gallons and they are taking 6!

I think I'm heavy root bound!

I hope I'm ok for this harvest, probably just days away according to a local grower.

I just put 26 clones into 5 gallon bags and they are now 30" tall !! I'm thinking I should have used 7 or 10 gallon bags.

I'll work in pulling one out for some pics, I'd like to get some good clear trich pics too.

Hey KJ,

been enjoying watching you go brother - it's exciting time for us both! I took a sample of mine about 5 days ago - a little premature but i wanted to start developing some knowledge of the difference. Easily some of the best smoke i've EVER had - so I'm completely excited to get going.

I wanted to tell you guys though about the HEAVY odors i was getting outdoors where i vent - i was starting to thing neighbors would notice 'a skunk'.

I did a little research into ventilation and built this today from some screen, activated carbon filter and some 4" duct bits - I am AMAZED - this eliminates every odor from the exhaust - i can't believe it - i am going to post a building guide - it's phenomenal

heres a pic!

Cool setup! I don't vent outside, and I don't think it smells all that much, but I'm probably getting used to it. I can smell it, but it's not anywhere near 'strong' to me. Maybe others smell better.

Ok, I turned off one HPS light and tried to take a pic, it didn't work well, so I brought out one of the most mature plants and set it under my 'regular' light which is 2 100W CFL warm (2700K ? )

One thing I noticed right away was that the buds are much darker. The hairs are almost all dark! It looked much lighter under the HPS.

I took some pics to show what's going on with the yellow/dying leaves and the general condition of the plant.

Some of the pics seem to show some amber trichs, but certainly not many of them from what I see. The LED lighted microscope shows very very few amber trichs and mostly cloudy with a few clear.

trichomes change from clear to cloudy to amber as they mature, they will not change further after harvest. the best time to harvest is between 5% to 30% amber based on personal preference. the high associated with your strain and percentage of amber trichomes. less amber trichomes are associated with a head high or productive high, more amber trichomes are associated with a sedative or "couch lock" high.

Hey Karl, got tied up last night with some stuff. My landlord is coming by today which means I BE FREAKING OUT.
I have some pictures I need to upload, ill get them up on my thread after this post brotha!

I wanna ask you about flushing on the rascal, done anything of the sort? I started getting some of that yellowing leave crispy look and hit her with a gallon of water and molasses, waited two or three days and watered her 1/2 strength, then full feed following that. Imo I would be pulling all those dying leaves out of these. I personally, and this is just me, when I see a leaf dying, I'll let it be until about 50% of it is "dead" then I will pluck it out of there, Once I see there is no coming back for that leaf I remove it so energy can be use else were. I felt like when I took all my yellow leaves off it came back even greener and packed on weight. Defol might be another thing you might want to experiment with KJ! You are a little ahead of me in flower also, the plants look very similar im sure its a rascal. Did you grow her from clone/seed? All in all it could just be she is mature and about ready to be harvested bud! How is she smelling??!
I wrote something out on my thread.. Lemony pungent diesel with a little berry.. You smellin' the same? Smells like it will just expanddd in your lungs :thumb:

Ya man I just looked at the pictures again, start pulling a few of those yellow fan leaves, she will be looking great, i'm going to start the fan leaf pull tomorrow or the next on rascal, get her all preped for drying/curing!

Thanks KingJohnC ! One of the things I'd like to get from this is a sleep aid. So sedative would be a good thing. If 5 to 30 is the range then I'm probably much close to 5% ... So maybe this weekend is harvest time.

I take it your landlord wouldn't approve of your garden :D That's too bad, because it's legal to grow in CA.

My plants all came from clones. I'm running Mr NiceGuy and Rascal OG only for now.

Smell: I really haven't noticed a 'strong' smell. I can smell it, and I don't have ANY filters, yet it doesn't seem that strong to me. I used to smoke cigs for years so maybe my ability to smell is damaged.

Flush: I started using just clear PH'd water about 2 weeks ago, then went back to water + nutes because I though I was too far from harvest based on the trichs. I was concerned that the plants didn't have enough soil to live until the trichs turned amber. I think I might be done with nutes on the mature plants at this time.

As far as nute strength goes, I've been at 100% for about the last 5 weeks or so. Someone suggested that based on the size and health of the plants, I should be at 100%.

I did the defol in the veg stage several times, but nothing in flower. I actually left the lower branches on when most remove all the lower ones. I plan on doing a selective harvest, so those lower branches will be given more time to mature before they are cut. Some have suggested a 50% gain in dry weight by doing a selective harvest. Also, if some are less mature and you let them go longer, you get a more consistent product.

One other note, when I pulled the one plant out from the HPS light for these pics, I was shocked how brown it looked! The bud sites and hairs are really brown!

He's outside cutting down trees right now, not coming inside to cut down my trees though I'll tell ya that, hah. Yeah you know it Is what it is, it's just a plant but I'd rather him not know! Defol subject, the rascal was a very leafy bitch, I defoled twice, at 11 days 12/12 and about 19 or 21 I forget, I think the rascal OG does like a little defoliation during flowering, it allowed a whole lot of the lower nugs to get direct sunglight, got plenty little .3-.5 nugs looking tasty. I remember someone posting on my thread saying you don't necessarily have to wait for trichs to change to harvest. If they are looking good and milky chop em! It's all over the forums, you know the couchlock versus a more clean crisp high. It's all preference. IMO your buds look very close to mine, with very little amber.. I would say you are very close to harvest KJ, i'd stick with the flushing for another week and see how she looks. Do you have any molasses you can mix in with your flushes? mcloadie pointed out to me "Blackstrap Unsulphered Molasses", I really like this stuff.. Very easy to use in feedings and the plants seem to enjoy it ALOT. Rascals buds look plumped up after the 2 gal phd molasses flush, fucking nuts! Gave her a second flush this morning. same deal, 2 gallons with 5ml per gal, her leaves are saggy but she looks tasty! I never ever want to use plain water with my plants ever again, they always get molasses in with any feeding! Nugs are looking danky. How is density with your girls KJ? They look mighty packed :peace:

This is my 1st grow and I have nothing to compare it to. Someone else is involved in this grow and he commented on the size, density and stickiness... he was pleased. He's the one saying we need max amber trichs, but he doesn't know the specifics of Rascal and amber trichs, so it might be that Rascal doesn't get as amber or something.

I'm going to get some of that molasses and give it a run, thanks for the tip.

I have drooping leaves from time to time too. It's usually been because of needing water, and they've always perked up after the watering.

Update: FedEx is here!

2 more complete 600W HPS lights for a total of 4 600W lights.

These are the exact same as the other with the 'gull wing' hood. The gull wing seems to spread the light better than the cool tube does, so I went with those.

I'll have to get some bars installed in the 1st room like I did in the 2nd room and I'll most likely have to run these off a second power line.

I don't know if you can run 4 600W lights on one 15 amp line, not to mention the A/C and fans.

However, the A/C is about to be killed off and I'll be running the "new to me" 2ton overhead unit soon, that 5,000 BTU unit is VERY near worthless! I run it full blast and it's hardly keeping up on very mild days, it'll NEVER keep up on hot days!

So I got a bunch of work to do: vents, ducting, A/C install, wiring, light holders, etc...

While I'm getting this setup, I might just run one of the new 600's as a side light for the 1st grow, just to give them some extra.

pretty much you will see amber

Meaning that I still need to wait... yeah, that seem to be the deal, I don't know the strain well, but I'm sure it follows the same basic rules as the other strains.

Well I hooked up the 2 new 600W lights. I just took 1 and set it at the end of the 1st grow so now there are 3 600W lights in there. It's not setup the way I want, but until I get the ceiling bars installed, it'll have to do.

I'll have to fire up the welder to make more long rods or just go buy some new rods.

The 2nd new light is in the 2nd grow room using the MH bulb, I'll have to move things around to get it into the center and have the T8's off to the edges. I had to turn off the 16 CFL bulb stick because the plants kept growing into it and burning.

So far the 2 new lights are on one power run that is shared with all the T8's and seems to be doing fine.

I'll have some new pics soon as I get things figured out.

so looking at your last pictures you posted yur buds look small.. my buds looked like that 3 weeks ago and have gotten much much bigger since then.. i though i read up there somewhere that you been in flower for 8 weeks... if this is true was there any problems or set backs during that time? where nutes used? ect.. i though where i was in flower for almost 6 weeks i would be almost done and i gathering i have another 3 4 weeks left

When I say I went into flowering, that's when I went 12/12 but I didn't have my HPS flowering light yet. I switched out some of the CFLs but not even 1/2 the light was flowering light.

It took somewhere around 2 weeks to get my 1st 600W HPS setup because they sent me a faulty hood and it shorted out the ballast.

Now I have 3 600W HPS lights going in the 1st grow and 1 600W HPS, 8 HO T8's in the 2nd grow.

So I got off to a shaky start on the flowering. That would probably account for about 1.5 to 2 weeks, but at the same time I did have some flowering CFLs in there so maybe closer to 1~1.5 weeks of a false start.

I also had a setback with a PM attack and I wasn't running the CO2 for a while.

I noticed in the last few days that several of the plants were leaning, so much lean, I was concerned they would be damaged. So I've added bamboo supports on some but need some more bamboo for about 3 other plants.

The buds just started to get wide about a week or so ago, I don't know what the bumps are called, but some of the plants don't have them yet.

You raised a good point, I'm probably more than a week behind because of how I started the 12/12.

I'll look at your journal and see where your buds are at to compare, I'd love for them to fatten up about now :D
