Jon's Outdoor Winter Photoperiod Grow

Sorry Jim, I was a little confused by that piece to be honest, so I pictured it but didn’t discuss it. Lol. Thanks for saving me, I should have asked you and put it in. Good info and now I know.
I'm confused, so confused, but I'm baked. I have to catch up on this journal but not tonight...

Ha. Well @Thirvnrob, I don’t know that catching up on this journal is going to alleviate your confusion. It says outdoor winter grow yet there are no outdoor plants (there were). There is a lot of water though. Stop by anytime.

Btw - since when is being baked an excuse for anything? I’m always baked.

Day 51

It’s getting fun now. She had absolutely no issue with the res change and is loving the new space she has in this res. These containers work exceptionally well, great purchase. Two 5-gallon buckets of feed fills it perfectly. And as @Rexer (Sensei Rexer) taught me, it’s much easier to maintain a larger res than it is a smaller one, especially when the roots start jamming.

It took 3/4 of a gallon to top off the res this morning. It was all the way full yesterday afternoon. I water through the coco top and let the runoff fill the res. Our ph is 5.74 and our tds is 181 (I think my pen is x10 but I use 185 as my base number) which is right around the base week four flower mix hotness level of the @Prescription Blend. It’s plenty, but I have plenty of ways to make it hotter too if I want. I’m excited to see how the White Widow does when she hits her res in a few days, way early in veg. But this “fill the pot first then hit the res around when they go to flower” concept works real well. That’s how the last Watermelon WeddingCake worked and now this PMC. Maybe the White Widow is going to go nuts and bring the house down.

Here she is today. Whoo hoo! Gotta be in the neighborhood of a month or five weeks out!

Veg Day 19

This plant is going to be a beast. She’s absolutely gorgeous. I started training her super early as I’m going with a “top all the side branches” approach on this one.

This is a six top ring. We’re going to add two more from the two topping shoots and have an octagon ring to begin. Flat top training. No towers.

I thought you guys said you wanted to see something good….

How about a pretty big auto in a 5x5?

Heh.

Final Training Touch: The Unveiling
Day 51

And now she begins to present for us the true glory of Dual Sombrero Training. Everything the silly name promises is quite apparent here. There comes a point in this training, after you are pretty sure all the buds are formed and you won’t get any new ones, when it’s time to let this girl spread her wings and fly. For which the girl needs a little help, which I gave her today and which you are the results of. But when you have the right plant which cooperates the right way, it can be breathtaking….I’ve only gotten lucky enough with a cooperative enough plant to hit it this well once before. This one is…jeez I almost hate to say it cuz it’s mine….spectacular. I’m beyond blown away. Couldn’t ask for anything more. From an auto. Phew.

So here it is, the unveiling of her final look. Now I just keep the res happy, and there’s a chain reaction that happens:

Happy res > Happy roots > Happy plant > Happy Jon

Happy Sunday everyone. Thanks for sharing my joy.

Our canopy begins to take shape. Here’s the start and a closeup on the interior training. When I have something to work with the topped tops are next.
@Remo Nutrients are awesome so far. I’m on veg week 3.

The one in the tent plus these three. $80 on the zon. Sturdy as hell. Small enough to fit several in a tent.

Veg Day 17

Uppotted her to her final home in the 7. Continuing the fold down the rim thing. It’s simply way way easier. Great uppot - the perfect crime. Lol.

Happiness is a new big bag of Mother Earth perlite #3. I don’t mind paying extra for Mother Earth. Perlite is not perlite. This is the best. I think. One reason why? Check out the bottom of the bag. See any dust? Or rocks all the way to the bottom? Very little dust. Very consistent pieces. Dry and clean. Awesome.

Here’s she is with a funny scale picture at the end.

Congrats on the new sprout! :cheer:

I couldn't find where you explain the benefits of the sombrero shape over a flat canopy (besides looking cool in profile!). Can you point me to it or elaborate if you don't mind?
I haven’t explained it as such, you didn’t miss it. I make no claims that this style beats a flat canopy. Depends on a whole bunch of factors. I am not really comparing as much as just presenting another training option. All I know is that I get good results with it. I will say this however - with flat canopies in a tent you rarely see buds with much stem. You see lots of buds with varying stem lengths. Short stem = small bud without fail. Sombrero training allows for every branch to get long. So that’s one difference that is related to yield. The Sombrero is WAY WAY easier than a flat canopy as well, lol, that’s a difference. I put them 50/50 on visual appeal, both are gorgeous to me.

It would take clones of the same strain and several side by side grows with the two styles and then comparing yields, as well as ease of chop/hang/trim, and anything else. And even then we’re talking about something that is extremely grower specific.

So I’m not saying and don’t know which is better or makes bigger yields. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. I just like having as many options as possible in my back pocket.

Does that answer your question, @InTheShed?

I would think that a canopy kept flat in veg but allowed to grow all through stretch might have some nice spears on them depending on the variety. I'm thinking of a lot of @Van Stank's plants. He had some enormous spears but was very meticulous with his pipe cleaner placement!

Though to be honest, he didn't go for dead flat like a scrog net, even a portable one. :)

Carcass gets some spears and he does aim for completely flat in veg.

Also might be tougher to accomplish with a clone anyway?

It does, thanks Jon!
