Jon’s 3 Autoflower - 3 Pounds Attempt Grow

Terrific and successful experiment! Was the bottom half of that lower pot submerged in water the entire time?
Ha! Leave it to @InTheShed to ask the most (imho) salient question to be asked! No! She began in the full pot setup from sprout but no water. I estimated the amount of time it took before the roots would reach the plate at the bottom of the lower pot. Until then I watered the top pot, and when I began to see roots at the base of the upper pot I started to water the lower pot too. Then I went to the mountains. Still no water. The day I got back I filled the reservoir. From that point on, whatever week of the PB feed chart we were on is what the reservoir was filled with. I changed the water completely about once a week. I let the runoff from watering up top just go into the reservoir each feeding and topped off the res as required. That’s it in a nutshell. But your question, I think, is THE determinant factor in the eventual size of the plant. What if the upper pot was small and she had water way earlier? Or is starting it approximately right at the veg/flower transition (that’s what happened here) the best call? See what I mean? Excellent question, thanks very much!

Thanks Jon! Was this like a SIP grow but without the air gap (since the roots obviously never air-pruned!)?
Hmmm…I don’t really know to be honest. I haven’t looked one time at a SIP grow and couldn’t even tell you what the acronym is. Lol. I’ve thought of it as close to a hempy. Just with a big pot. Lol.

Banana Sherbet XXL Autoflower
Strain Review/Report

The Banana Sherbet has had around 3 weeks to cure, and she’s humming the coolest tune. Opening the jar is pure joy. Let’s get to the skinny first.

Banana Sherbet XXL Autoflower

Genetics
: Grower’s Choice
Lineage: Strawberry Banana x Sunset Sherbet x Ruderalis
Type: 70% indica/30% sativa
THC: 21-26%
Lifespan: 10-12 Weeks From Seed

That’s the most relevant stuff. Here’s the important/relevant information on how I grew this particular plant.

Medium: 70% coco/30% perlite
Additives: Bokashi/Frass/Mycorrhizae
Pot Size: 7 gallon
Nutes: @Prescription Blend
Additional Nutes: Fox Farms Microbe Brew, Fox Farms Kelp Me Kelp You, Fox Farms Wholly Mackerel, MSA (40%), bokashi/frass top dressing
CalMag Used: Humboldt’s Secret CalMag plus Iron, 2-0-0.
Growing Style: Scrog
Tent Size: 3x3
Light: NextLight 420h
Harvested: Day 86-88 (partial harvest in two parts)
Yield: 317 grams (11.2 ounces) finish trimmed and jarred buds

This was my first attempt at an auto scrog. Other than a bit of a reach issue to the back left corner it was very successful. (Thanks for the assistance @Rexer!)

The plant is exceedingly easy to grow. She’s very very productive with tons of side branching. In coco she got big - completely filling the 3x3 and as close to the light as she could be. Loads of stretch - she easily doubled, maybe a bit more than that. She handled every additive and nute choice beautifully, I brought her home without the slightest blemish. (:thanks: Prescription Blend!). The plant took to scrog training without any issues as well as being up potted twice. She gets very leafy and it was necessary to stay on top of the defoliation.

Banana Sherbet does NOT taste or smell like banana. At least mine doesn’t. But it is a stinker. To my nose she smells lemony/limey, sweet, a bit earthy, a bit creamy, and has a deeper "dank” smell. The odor is strong and fills the room upon opening a jar. The buds are about 3/4 of the way to being rock hard in terms of density. Pretty dense, not impossibly dense, lol. Somewhere between a Magic Eraser and a rock. They are frosty and break up beautifully. I call it “popcorn bud,” because when you break it up it’s chock full of round little popcorn balls - not a single seed on the plant but it’s the kind of bud that when you break it up you might say “is that a seed?” It’s not. Lol. Just a fat round calyx full of love. Even dry this bud is sticky through and through - enough so that it will stick to your fingers if broken up by hand.

She is amazingly productive. I jarred 11.2 ounces of buds just like in the photos. There was maybe a 1/2 ounce of flarfy bud that didn’t make the jars. I’ve only ever grown one auto that yielded bigger.

The bud tastes much like it smells. To my palate it’s fruity and sweet on the inhale, dank and creamy on the exhale. Leaves a citrusy aftertaste on your upper palate. It’s addictive - I keep smoking it way after I’m already high. It’s also on the higher end of the THC range. Easily in the mid-20s percent I believe.

The buzz is close to immediate. I took this plant with very little amber to try and mitigate the indica side a little bit. Seems it worked - what get from it is a very balanced head and body buzz. It good for my back pain, I wouldn’t say it’s great. Could be better. It’s also fun to play on although not in the Watermelon WeddingCake in that particular regard (the standard thus far). The buzz is head first, body second, kicking in after maybe 15-20 minutes for me. It’s strong but not overwhelming, and it’s up enough to smoke any time of day or night. For me it lasts about an hour and a half, maybe two hours. There’s a sense of clarity and a good bit of giggly. Also comes with a certain degree of short term memory loss. Lol. Great buzz.

I will definitely grow this plant again. I suppose the taste and smell I describe as creamy is where they get the banana from (guessing). Definitely not banana, but it is rather distinctive, and I don’t have any bud with that particular quality. Excellent plant, excellent bud. This one is a winner all around.

Here’s what we’re talking about!

Thank you as always for your interest and support!!!

That's a very brutal widow @Jon ;)
Thanks @Kanno26 - yeah she’s a beast. Very surprised. I never have super high expectations when trying a new genetic. Original Harvest is 1-1 with me! And only a day or two or three away!

Hiya @Emilya Green - I finally lurked around your grows a little bit last night. Very impressive as always. Never seen white hairs so long and spindly and full like that one girl before. Looks almost like thistle. Beautiful work. Hey so you’re the only person I know who has also grown the Banana Sherbet. I was wondering how yours came out and if my review reflects what you got from yours? Since you grew yours in soil with @GeoFlora Nutrients, if you are so inclined it might be a cool contrast for people who are interested in growing the strain. Thanks, hot female original Sensei!

Serious Root Porn Part A
Pseudo Hempy Pot Breakdown Part 2
@Rexer (Sensei)

This is a two part post due to the amount of photos involved. This is part one and focuses on the plant pre-full breakdown.

I guess you hydro guys are used to this, but to my eyes this is RIDICULOUS. This is SO MUCH ROOTS!!! No wonder the yield is so high! I’m not sure, but they look pretty healthy and well formed to my eye as well. And I’m a but surprised at the extent to which the roots filled the lower coco pot. All of this just stopped me in my tracks. My GOD.

So without the long winded descriptions, here’s a series of photos showing you what was going on in the reservoir. The outside of the submerged pot. The small plastic round thing in the one picture is my air stone, which the roots tried to force out. I wonder how quickly it became useless? Lol.

So I titled this post as root porn. Pretty sure this qualifies. Enjoy. Try to not get wood.

Next post coming right up. Viagra time.

In this post we finish taking the pot apart and have a looksie inside. Again my mind is blown. You’ll see what I mean, I don’t believe this requires any description.

Beautiful! Look at all those roots! Nicely done Jon!
She sure ate up that airstone eh

This is what happens when they get both plenty of water and lots of oxygen.
Its why in regular soil grows that proper soil tilth and fabric pots are so important.
In my 20-25 gallon fabric pots that I've retired my roots completely filled the pot top to bottom side to side which is nice but then you have to consider in LOS that the tiny spiderweb like roots of the mycorrhazae is even more root mass than what you see with the plants roots.

If nothing else that tells me the addition of the second air stone for the outside of the submerged pot was definitely a good idea. Thanks for this.
