Best (only?) use for dryer lint ever...makes your soil pretty AND provides aeration AND helps retains moisture.
Dirt from your yard is perfect (unless they spray it with chemicals). No more of that Kelloggs mix....manure is hot, and chicken manure is one of the hottest. You can keep what is in the bin there, but bury it in reg dirt and soak the dirt. Throw in more food, then worms. Since the hot ingredients are on the bottom the worms can avoid it for now and over the next few weeks the added water, food, and worm poop will titrate down and neutralize the hot components.
Worms bins output what you input...the worms just make everything better. If you have no old soil or other media...just buy cheap, (non-enhanced) bag soil (or two) and maybe throw in some new coir. I like coir for the same reasons I noted for lint above. If I didn't have it when I started a worm bin, I would add it before potting...but if I have it and need some added media volume I throw it in.
My starter for my bins comes from (approx) 10 yards of compost in various stages of decomposition that I have been cultivating for 3+ years. People drop their leaves and ashes at our farm...I even have a sign saying "Leaves Wanted" by the road.
