InTheShed Grows Inside & Out: Jump In Any Time

When you use the entire contents of your bin you are also incorporating the composted organic matter, (soil/coir) media, and the rest. It is a more diverse (and thankfully diluted) potting medium.

Yeah - good. So that would be vermicompost, yes? As opposed to worm castings - as you describe. That’s the distinction between them I think, isn’t it? Bobrown uses the vermicasting method I’m pretty sure.

We’ve set up a layered thing for castings from food waste, and garden leafy greens. And have a large garden waste pile that we digout from underneath periodically - so I think what comes out of that could be described as vermicimpost.

Get into it Shed - vermicompost, castings a few minerals and stinging nettles and you’ve got everything you need

Have a great long weekend, assuming you have one for Easter. Hope you’ve got some time out planned. It was/is giid Friday here now -and it was good. I harvested so I’m bathed in delicious aromas of sour grapiness and a bit of lemon diesel mixed in. It’s hangung now in a semi-open cabinet in my room so the aroma therapy is full on :) Pretty high and resting after my hard work, in front of tv with world surf competition on - it’s pretty good
:rollit:
Hope your - and everyone’s - good Friday is good as well, Shed
:Namaste:

@TheMadDabber @Amy Gardner Yay worms...go Blew! Mine should arrive next week sometime and I'll have the bin and the scraps all ready for them. Lots of cooking going on in my house last two days so potato skins, carrot shavings, eggshells, teabags (always - wife's from London ;)) all being saved. I think I'll blend them to give the worms a head start. Also going to use shredded paper as I've seen that a lot on youtube.
I’m here now! #fashionablylate I’m not going to be able to read this giant journal but I’ll try to catch up;)

Welcome to the party Newty! Please don't read from the beginning as it was just a bunch of dead clones :). Cliff notes version: I previously grew only autos. Now I have 6 photos and a brand new auto masszar. Photos: AK-47 (monstercrop clone taken in October, now day 6 of flip), Gold Leaf (monstercrop clone taken in October), Sour G seed (Sour Diesel x Gorilla Bomb from Rooster Farms), and 3 AK clones I finally managed to get to survive. 2 of the 3 clones I will get rid of in the next few weeks to stay legal) and one I will keep in case my wife really likes the AK-47 after I harvest it sometime late May. I might try to get some fem seeds from it this summer as well.

And now for the (good) Friday update! It's day 5 for the AM and not much is happening above the surface, but it's nice and green and stocky so I hope much is going on in the soil!

And here is the AK on day 6 of flip. The orange tape on the top edges of the pot are the front and back so I know how to slide it into the dark box at night.

I tip spread every morning and I'm not seeing any issues with the feeding from yesterday, so all is well. Waiting for more growth before I make any new decisions about shaping as we head into pistils.

Sour G training continues, more pics tomorrow.

Hope you all have a Good Friday, a great Passover, and a happy Easter!

Awesome! Thanks for the cliff notes;)

I love clones!! Especially monsters! We have waaay more grow stuff in common than I realized! Good thing I came over here.

Cheers and a toke to

Well f I guess I gotta jump in on cooking soil my family is coming up and they have a worm farm...I'll ask her to bring some up and go soil in the next 3 months!! Man, if the flavour gets better in soil I'll be extra happy about worms!!
:cheer::cheer::cheer:
Gotta listen when the universe lines up I guess?
I want to Get some good soil for my outdoor grow and garden, so I’ll be taking notes fellas!

Also, while reading this post I remembered the best compliment I got this week. I had a cousin from Saskatchewan come visit this past week and I gave her some weed to bring to her dad whom grows outdoors in soil and is a farmer, very good weed but only gets a summer crop. He has a lot of back problems. Anyways, she texted me later to say that dad was so impressed with the quality:) But that wasn’t the compliment...he says, and I looked back to quote, “Fuck that's a good looking nug. It's funny becuase I've got to experience a wide variety of pot but yours has the same base earthyness that we've grown. 110%impressed”

That earthiness quality is exactly what I love about growing in soil outdoors...Currently, mine are grown in coco coir, indoors;)

Damn you beat me to it. When Amy said Easter, I was thinking Passover lol.

Dude, your gonna work out too? I'm so excited for you. REALLY just excited to learn more. Have you read any organic gardening books (anyone) that you would care to recommend? I may look into a few.

Sorry I got distracted by excitement @Derbybud yes I am very PROUD!

....but the plants are looking stellar Mr shedster! I love the new little one. And you captured a nice picture too.

Good call on the tape for orienting the AK. You're always a step ahead.

Well hope your Friday is going well. So far looks like it must be, hey, maybe you can even sneak in a nap....

Be well bud

Aww, thanks newty! We may have a lot in common but you have the newtyjuice that the rest of us here can only admire and envy :). Next photo I grow from seed I want to try to get to look like your plant in the window pic. That is so cool!

It did. Blew posted such a positive post about worms I just had to jump on his offer to ship some to me!

Always good to get a compliment from a long-time grower, particularly since you have that outdoor soil grow earthy quality from your indoor coco! :thumb:

I hope this vermicomposting thing doesn't turn into soil cooking though! I'm banking on the no-smell promise. As much as my wife is into me growing her weed, she is not into saving kitchen scraps and stinking up the side of the house. She's just fine with me buying soil and mixing nutes!

And I don't need LOS or plants that never need to be fed. I don't want to brew teas and have airstones going. But to be able to skip a few weeks because there's plenty of what a plant needs would be great!

Damn you beat me to it. When Amy said Easter, I was thinking Passover lol.

I've never read any books on gardening or anything organic. My actual garden is organic in the fact that I just water. No nutes, no pesticides. Sometimes I'll throw some of that citrus fertilizer on the soil near the lemon trees (so not totally organic) but it's mostly untouched. This worm thing will be my first foray into anything like organic farming. It will probably be the end of it as well ;).

No nap today as I'm too busy at work (typing this obv), but you know me so well!

Sorry Amy, didn't want this to go unreplied! Congrats on surviving the harvest and getting to enjoy the smells while you recover!

If I had some land I would do much more with composting and making my own soil, but the longer I live in this house, the less room I have to play in. First we converted the garage to a rec-room and I had to build "The Shed" on the back and buy two plastic sheds for everything that didn't go in there any more. Instead of having 20x20 to work in I had about 3x8 (where the plants live at night now). At least I still had the backyard when I needed room to build stuff and replant/mix soil/nutes. Now we're redoing the yard with furniture and turf and a firetable (y'know...outdoor living space :)) so I have no idea where I'll be able to actually use my table saw or sand the kiln wash off my shelves or rinse the perlite. Might have to do all that in the driveway soon . "MOVE THE CARS UNLESS YOU WANT THEM COVERED IN SAWDUST!"

Anyway, if we ever have to move out of LA, I'll probably be too old at that point to enjoy any acreage I got!

Oh I was just jumping on your band wagon - it sounded like you were about to take the plunge!
Sounds like you’re doing the worm farm anyway - so that’s great. I don’t do aerated teas either. Air stones can reportedly harbour bad bacteria anyway- that are impossible to clean out.
I hope it goes well with the worm castings. The thing to remember is that the ‘castings’ or vermicompost get processed in the soil by a healthy micro herd of soil biota. So even if everything the plant needs is in the soil, the soil community needs to be alive in order for the plants to get it. Your bottled nutes are already converted (I think). I’m interested to see if trying to bring them together can work.
One book (@TheMadDabber ) that is helpful is called ‘teaming with microbes’ - it’s a little bit preachy in that they do a lot of assuming the reader has come from using nasty chems and pesticides etc, but the soil science they’re sharing is good and well explained. They also make it seem like more work - the end section talks about aerated teas etc. But I’ve had some success without doing them and pretty sure Bb has recently said he hasn’t done an aerated compost tea in ages.
I’m sure you’ll get plenty of goodness from the worm setup - ours really doesn’t smell at all. I can’t stand the smell of composting food scraps - and the worm bin doesn’t smell of that at all. :slide:

Your plant trimming and training is looking tops btw - the AK looks so funky, in a ‘I’m ready to go out dancing’ kinda way :) It looks ready to explode that’s for sure.

I find myself getting curious what your actual grow room looks like... lights etc...

Glad your Friday was good too :Namaste:

:thanks: So that’s a mars 300 supplemented with cfls? Looks good. And is that a simple cocoon of Kingfoil insulation around them? I have some of that leftover in my shed.., might use it to insulate the grow box for my winter indoor...
Just the MarsHydro supplemented by ~8 hours of direct sunlight ;). The bulbs hanging there are incandescents for heat. And the silver bubblewrap I used to protect the walls from the kiln, but it works well as a reflective surface in the shed. When the AK leaves at night I close off the foil into the Oval of Brightness®.

no matter from what angle i look at the AK she keeps looking amazing its almost like a bonzai ...
Thanks Pt! I'll get some pics from above so you can see how it keeps filling in no matter how many times I trim it. I'll probably do one more defol when it's done with stretch.
