Morning everyone. Hey I forgot to answer you about the date that clone started life. It was Dec 10th if I remember correctly. The one in my tent rooted on the 7th.

My first question is this can someone make oil out of fan leaves or is it from just the trim from around the bud? Then when it is done it is basically a slow cook I am guessing is it a certain amount of oil to leaf trim or do you just take the lead trim you have and cover it with oil and cook it off for a few hours? Sorry I am very new to having the extra things to play with and wanted to know. Thank you in advance.

You can absolutely make fan leaf oil. It's just not nearly as strong as oil made from buds or trim.

You start by decarbing the leaves first like you do with buds. Then you slow cook with your oil (I use EVOO but others use coconut or avocado oil) at around 160-180º F for 8 hours in whatever you have on hand. Stir about every 23-30 minutes. You can use a turkey roaster or a crock pot if you have a lot, or just a regular sized pot if you have a smaller collection of fans. The less oil you use the stronger it gets, but you still have to cover the leaves.

You're not cooking the oil off (it should never boil), just infusing the oil with the goodness of the leaves. When time is up, strain the oil with cheesecloth and you're done!

Let me know if you have any other questions. We have a lot of oil makers here!

What is decarbing the leaves?
Decarb (decarboxylation) is the process of heating the plant material (leaves, trim, or buds) to activate THC to enable the euphoric effects of the plant. Just like we burn it when we smoke it. If you just eat raw buds they won't get you high. Decarboxylation in this case would be heating the dried leaves in an oven at approximately 240º F for 60-90 minutes.

That's the basic description anyway. There are many ways to decarb but that's the simplest.

I just found the fan-leaf oil tutorial that @newty did! She uses coconut oil so it's solid at room temperature, but feel free to modify this to whatever oil you'll be using:
Newty’s Perpetual Pantry Party & Outdoor Grow Show

Very similar to my description but with great photos as well! If you are going to add liquid lecithin, do it after you are done with the infusion.

Yeah, it's written like topping instructions but then you just end up with chopped leaves and you wonder what you did wrong having done everything right! I waited two weeks I think before I just cut the damn thing off.
Because I don’t know when to give up, I tried to re-FIM the new growth again. Can’t tell if it was successful, but the early results are looking promising in that they look different from last time. Also talked to a grower friend who said his success rate with FIMming is ~30%. That said, you probably did it correctly Shed and it just didn’t work. Knowing him and how good he is, if he’s getting those results then I’m convinced there’s an element of luck involved with FIMming... but if anyone can provide 10 pics of different plants they’ve personally FIMmed successfully, I’ll be more than happy to change that position and would love to learn how you did/ do - do it :)

I don't know that I would ever do anything with a 30% success rate unless it was speed dating! [In case my wife divorces me I'm leaving that option open given my age ;).] In the time I waited to see if it was successful I could have been doing a lot of other training that might have been just as productive in the end. Who knows?

Good luck with it this time! I guess we'll know in a week or so :thumb:.
