Cannabis needs both sperm and eggs to make babies. Generally male plants make the sperm in the form of pollen, and generally female plants make eggs in their ovaries. Pollen from male parts get on stigmas from female parts and makes seeds.I always thought that if u had a bagseed from a hermie plant that no matter what if it was a female that by mid flower it would start to produce seeds itself!!!! is that wrong i guess.. im asking bc thats what iv always heard in want to be corrected on it if so??
However, any male plant can spontaneously make female parts, and any female plant can spontaneously make male parts. When that happens we call them hermaphrodites, or hermies. It’s just a thing that they do sometimes.
The tendency for plants to exhibit hermaphroditism seems to be genetic, whether it’s a low incidence or a high incidence - but all cannabis plants have this ability.
Not all plants that have the genes for a high incidence of creating hermaphrodites will do so, it’s just statistically higher that they might, given the conditions to do so. A seed with the genetic potential for hermaphroditism may never show it, if there are no stressors in its environment to cause a need for it.
On the other hand, other plants may have such a high tendency that every plant grown from that crossing may develop as both male and female. It’s just kind of a roll of the dice.
Which is why responsible breeders will either cull that particular breeding line if the hermie trait is too strong, or breed it to more stable plants to lower the incidence of that trait expressing itself.
