InTheShed Grows Inside & Out: Jump In Any Time

Saturday night update time. Today, since my son has an awful cough for the last 4 days and can't smoke, I finally decided to try to make QWET for the first time, for capsules. I would like to preface this by saying that whatever I learned about QWET-making, I learned from @Grandpa Tokin in his thread here. Don't follow my directions if you are looking for guidance, follow his!

I need to give big thanks to @Preston9mm for sending me a bottle out of the blue!
:thanks:

Lots of pics so let's get to it:

First, I had ground up about 20g of last summer's IIP mixed with some AK-47 from last spring and stuck it in the freezer, along with the 200ml bottle of Everclear and a jar. It was time to dig them out from under the frozen chicken, steaks, ground beef, fish, and a loaf of sourdough:

I also heated up the hotplate for the water bath to around 140º F, and put in the pyrex dish on the nuts to keep it off the metal (this part was done outside because alcohol fumes are highly combustible):

And got out the rest of the things needed for the process:

200ml was perfect for the 20 grams (thanks for the recommendation Grandpa and @Pennywise):

I swirled the mix for about 2 minutes (longer than Grandpa recommends) and poured it through the strainer:

After using a spoon to push as much liquid out of the mash as I could, I ended up with about 150ml:

I then filtered it through a coffee filter:

Here is the first pass:

I ran it through another filter:

Grandpa wants his the color of good piss, but mine looks like someone is dehydrated:

Into the pyrex dish it goes:

And onto the nuts:

I saved the mash for the salve bin just for the heck of it.

It took about 30 minutes to get to this:

Which was probably a bit too log, because by the time I got it inside, it was getting pretty solid, like this:

Time to start scraping:

This stuff leaves everything so sticky it's like scissor hash on steroids! I don't have any silicone pads, so I used parchment paper:

And I folded it over and put it in the freezer. I think the next step is to take it out and leave it in a drawer for a few days for it to stabilize, so I'll do that in the morning. Then I'll pull it all together (I hope it comes off the paper okay!) and make capsules with coconut oil. I'll post that process when I get to it.

I hope your weekend is going well and you love your fellow humans enough to keep them safe with a mask outside. I'll get some summer grow pics in here tomorrow.
:ciao:
I switched from olive oil extracts to tinctures and I couldn't be happier. I never got a nice relaxing buzz with olive oil but with tinctures, it's like my old comfortable friend is back.

Since I first saw the freezer 3 to 5 minute soak method I have wondered how much extraction you are really getting so I have an experiment going right now comparing the amount of resin extracted using four different methods. The first is a five-minute soak using the freezer method, the second is one hour at room temperature, the second is one day at room temperature and the final one is a full week of soaking. I was curious because I read of several methods on other sites with very long soak times but here a brief soak in the freezer method seems to be preferred.

I'm just letting the alcohol evaporate at room temperature so I should have some initial results within the next couple days. I'll leave some results if you like or a link?

If you get in a pinch again, there’s always extractahol. IIRC it was about $100 for a gallon of food grade, 200 proof. I can’t remember what a 1/5th of everclear runs here, but last time I got some I think it was around $25 or so for a 1/5th.

Sure awful nice surprise from señor @Preston9mm! Nice job bud!

Preston is a rock! As we say here... but what's the reason for it not to be sold i LA, same as here? Stupid people would drink it?
Looks like a very successful run with it!
Stay safe Shed!
Thanks Crazy! There are a lot of states that don't sell Everclear, including California and Ohio - two completely different types of states sharing one goal: to keep folks from being stupid with 95% alcohol :).
If it’s hard to remove from the parchment just place it back in the freezer for 30 minutes and it should come off no problem.
Thanks Penny. I'm going to give a go tonight.
Highya ITS,
Love the process and pics to show how it's done. How's the effect after reducing it down. I ask because I made a tincture with everclear one time, and didn't get much (if anything) effect from consuming. Since then, I infused olive oil, and like that effect much better. To each, their own, right?!? Happy Smokin'
I'm using the the alcohol to dissolve the trichomes and then evaporate it off, and you're left with something between 50-80% THCa when your done. It gets decarbed and then mixed into coconut oil for capsules. I don't know what the THC percentage is with tincture but I would think you would need a lot of bud given how little you can hold under your tongue! So it was either that or maybe you skipped the decarb somewhere in your process? With tincture you would need to decarb first.
Thats some nice clean looking oil mate
Thanks Celt!
Hello all Nice QWET! I hope you all are having a green day. I live in so.cal. and I get my grain alcohol at the hydro store. I got an MBM and after running a tincture cycle, I'll strain it and reduce it on a coffee pot warmer. I deoxycarbolate the bud first. Do you deoxy the bud first? A good dose for me is about 10ml but it's not reduced nearly as much.
Really nice pics. Very informative. I'll have to re read Grandpa Tokins' post. Thank you
Thanks Fred! Definitely read Grandpa's thread for the best practices :). I will be decarbing the rosin once I get it all collected because that seems to be how it's done. If I were making edibles it would probably improve the taste as well, because you wouldn't get the "toasted bud" taste you do from oven-decarbed buds.

Definitely post your results here Homer! As I recall, the reason for freezing and the quick-wash is to prevent as much chlorophyll from ending up in your finished product, which is why pale yellow is the gold standard.

I don't think I'll bother going through this again given the cost of Everclear/Extractahol, which ends up in the atmosphere without sinking more money into a distiller. Only if I had a medical need would I go through the time/expense. But with a friend like @Preston9mm, experimentation is possible. :cheesygrinsmiley:

Without further ado, here is the Monday night update, with some pics of the @Weedseedsexpress plants!

We are on day 48 for both the Chocolope and the Power Plant, and I need them to get much bigger before they flower, so they are in the shed at night under about 220w of Samsung LEDs. I will probably flip them rather then letting them go au natural with the shortening days to make sure they finish before the damp of fall.

Enough talking, pics!

Chocolope:

The SaugaView®:

Power Plant (pardon the droop...tomorrow is water day):

The SaugaView®:

They're getting 4.5g/gallon MC and seem pretty hungry compared to my recent plants. The big Carnival is only getting 5g/gallon.

And the two older DDAs are starting to show preflowers (of course they are because it's day 21!), and they are both going to be the dark purple if new growth is any indication. I'll get some closeups later this week:

The older ones were on 3.5g/gallon last watering and the smaller one was on 2g, but next watering will be 4g for all.

That's it for me today. Be well, be safe, be considerate. I miss you all.
:Namaste:

Interesting. I had looked at another extraction device that used alcohol under a vacuum. Short of it was it let you reclaim the alcohol for reuse, and still gave up the rso. I’d have to look up the name. It was down to that and a dabpress. Press won out, but only because I can use it for more than just making rosin. I've already pressed some mint for flavor extract, and it came out great.

I use a fairly inexpensive alcohol/water distiller to make RSO and can reclaim about 85% of the alcohol. It does not do it under vacuum and you don't go directly to RSO - you still have to finish the last of the evaporation on a hot plate, or something similar. Those hot plates are only about $20, though, so they're cheap, it's just an extra step.

Nice update, Shed- I Love the near perfect symmetry of that Chocolope!
Glad you're doing ok- we miss you too!

Reclaim on the alcohol is the kicker. Makes the cost a lot less over time.

Exactly! It pays for itself in a couple of runs, or so, depending on how much you make at a time and how much you pay for grain alcohol. It also increases the proof of the alcohol so, if you can only get 151 proof, as you reclaim it, it will go up. ;)

I just baked some brownies, Cant wait for them to cool off so I can try them. I didn't strain the bud I left it in the butter I made so these will be a new adventure. They may be awful or they may be Great. Maybe they will be stronger then usual or they could taste so bad that no one wants to eat them. We will see in a couple hours but I usually asleep by 10:00pm so I will test them tomorrow earlier in the afternoon

I only learned since I started my experiment that pale yellow is the gold standard for extractions but I assume that standard exists for dabbers who smoke their resin but ingesting mine usually with food I’m not really concerned with the chlorophyll because I can’t taste it. So I don’t mind tolerating additional chlorophyll for more resin extraction.

So I don’t even filter my extract through a coffee filter but I have been filtering it through an 80 µm rosin bag which is about .003” but a coffee filter apparently only filters to about 20 µm which isn’t a huge difference. But yes I will post my results here also when the final results are in. Hope you’re doing okay buddy.
