Increasing yield with defoliation indoors: What's it mean? How to do it?

I ALWAYS use a CFL for raising my seedling and into Veg a bit..
My Hi-output CFL broke other day unfortunately:( But they do GREAT for plants, 6500k's plants love and respond well to them, I use them with a small fan just blowing between globe and plant tops just to move some heat.
But generally you ll be safe at 2 inches or so, dont wanna go much higher away than around 3inch IMO as the plants dont mind em close and youll have tight node spacing.
I veg till big enuf for my MH, once they get a certain height - you HAVE to have your light s set out in a particular way for max potential as theyre light penetration is lower than a 80,000 Lumen MH!! Other than that IMO plants respond faster during initial veg if enuf CFL's are present as opposed to my 400w MH.
Keep up the green thumbs;) Later, Smokemup.
( oh - Ive just dried my nugs harvest pics! AND I got a surprise with weight, smaller buds good yield )

Thanks for all the advice guys. I'm about 3 and 1/2 weeks into 12/12 now and the buds are growing and forming nicely. I'm not expecting a large yield given the beginner's mistakes I've made on my first grow, but it will be a smokable harvest nonetheless. Next grow will probably be Black Russian from Delicious Seeds. We'll see just how much I can get with a minimalist setup, CFLs, and the help and information I've gotten from this great community. I'm really excited to get this grow underway.

Thanks,

KidFrankie

I have a question. Please forgive me if it's answered in the thread and I missed it, but it's looking like every strain I'm growing right now and defoliating is finishing up about a week early. Is this normal?

LMAO! Is there ONE answer everybody can answer the same? What is it about herb that sends us into the twilight zone where everybody has conflicting evidence? The amazing plant...

actually i was just thinking that if defol has decreased your havest time...just be thankfulll and enjoy the herb....most people expect delays in time but an increase in yield

DrofDank, sounds like you just found the perfect amount of defol for your strain. Grats! :high-five: :thumb:

I just cut everything but the sugar leaves on day 15 of flowering. Shit. LOL! Umm, what are some signs of stress that I should be looking for?

the biggest sign of stress is that nothing happens.......

unfortunatly thats meaning buds stop growing e.t.c

also but far less likely from defol than light issues, a remote possibility of hermie (ive never seen it with my own eyes)

GiGaBaNE can u look at my journal and tell me if you think i should defol my biggest plant, i tied it down and removed about 5 leaves, just wondering if you think i should lose some more??

I'm stoned, so please forgive me, but are you saying that's something you don't know the answer to, or are you saying they don't mature, and this is something you're, unfortunately, all too familiar with? :lot-o-toke:

god i love this website! "I'm stoned, so please forgive me" its the only place i really get to hear those words and it be normal =D

i mean i have no clue what happens with regard to the maturation =D

Do the trichomes continue to mature, though?

My guess is, and it's only a guess, yes. This is based on my theory about the kinds of evolutionary pressures on the plant, and it's responses to these stresses. Most folks agree that one of the purposes of trichomes is to protect the plant from being eaten. Defoliation is like simulating an animal grazing on the plant. I would think, that the plant would respond by making even more trichomes to protect what remains of the plant. Again, this is just a theory. It seems logical, but so far, the plants haven't answered when I asked them directly. At least they haven't answered THAT question. They talk to me plenty, but are hush hush on that topic so far.

That makes sense. I think I'll do some more experimenting. :) A cool thing about my setup is I'm doing a SOG, with 4 rows of 6 plants, each row about 1 1/2 weeks apart, so I can experiment on a couple, and compare them to the others in the same row as a reference, and if I screw up, hey, there's some more herb just a little further behind. Next on my agenda is seeing if I'll get more out of 2 2-gallon cloth pots per tray (2 trays per row), or 3 1-gallon pots per tray. THEN, on to combining some ScrOG elements to it. I'm thinking of just building a frame that will sit over the trays with netting on top, or a tomato cage over each pot.
