Icemud's LED Grow - The Tangie Pheno Hunt

Good one. A good laugh before bed. The universe is much more than we think. It'll certainly keep you on your toes.

So... Updates today:

I decided to top all the tangies on friday evening to give me a few more tops per plant, hopefully encouraging lower growth so that I have some nice branches that I can take as clones. Originally I was going to use the topped portion for clones, but I will be taking a vacation in about 1 week, so I knew that being gone for 6 days I wouldn't be able to care for the clones (daily spraying and making sure they dont dry up) so I am going to wait to clone them until I get back, which by then I hope to have more branching to allow for this to happen.

I'm not in a huge rush to flower these and want to make sure that I get a decent yield, even though not the goal of this grow, its still nice to have an abundance instead of not :)

I gave all the plants (including the other 2 tents) some TandJ tea and also a foliar feeding of TandJ tea on Friday and so far the girls really seemed to love it.

My other tent is doing well, I topped the girls about 1 wk ago and all the auxillary branches are forming and really starting to bush the girls out. They are really starting to look extremely healthy... And also, the spider mite issue from when I picked up the clones is completely gone, no spidermites can stop my 3 part treatment :) lol anyhow good that I got rid of them and happy to see that even the little GDP's are growing now :)

Ice they are looking nice man. I am glad that you were able to save the GDP. I probably said this in the last journal when you talked about how you got them, but I am very interested in the GDP. God knows that I have my hands full at the moment, but I think I would love to try that strain. Everything I have read about it, it seems to be just a very strong, colorful, awesome smoke. So please save them :) I am loving your journals Ice, thanks for being you and have fun on the vacation.

I need to jump back and blog that magnificent three-step method to eradicate spider mites. God forbid I should ever have a problem, but the concern raises its ugly head frequently in the grow rooms and a proven method can be an invaluable resource.

I use a 3 part treatment...the reason, mites become immune quickly to certain pesticides so best to "throw them off"

3 ingredients:
Captain Jacks deadbug (organic)...this is a biological treatment called spinosad...works for like 80 different pests.
Bon Neem: a neem oil and pyretherin spray
Mite X by Bonide: clove oil, garlic oil, cottonseed oil.

I start with the Bon Neem, spray plants tops and bottoms of the leaves.... wait about 3-4 days...
Then I spray Captain Jacks Deadbug, i usually mix this in with nutrients usually used in foliar feedings, wait 3-4 days.
Then I spray Mite X, again covering tops and bottoms of leaves.....

By now you should not see any mites, but its best to repeat this cycle for 30 days to make sure to kill off any new spidermites that may hatch...

This has worked 100% completely on 2 different occasions....

Also Spinosad is good for thrips and many other pests, OMRI listed and can "supposedly" be sprayed up until harvest on food crops. I use it in my foliar spray during veg for a preventative measure, and the effects of 1 spray are supposed to last up to 3 weeks.

Hey Bamalabrat!!

thanks :)

I'm happy that the GDP survived too. Ive been babying them, giving them a very very mild foliar spray every single day and so far they are growing, very slow, but there is new growth, and when I transplanted there was roots.

Still not sure if its actually GDP, already have had 2 strikes from other sources, so not too hopeful that this is the real deal, but only time will tell :)

GDP is an amazing smoke, it has a very distinct taste and smell, hard to describe but like a grape cotton candy kind of, and packs a very heavy punch. I remember the 1st time I smoked GDP i forgot how to walk...literally stood there standing, looking at my feet thinking...oK, now how does this work....come on feet...move! LOL

I also forgot to mention, all 3 of these products are OMRI listed organic....

Also, they are all made by a brand called Bonide.... I love this brand, as it works very well.

I also use Bonides fish fertz which have a 2-4-0 rating, much different than most other fish products which have high N and 0PK.

Thank you so much Icemud. Now I don't have to go looking for it and it's in my blog, easily accessible when next I come across someone who needs it (not me - never me!!!)

I saw an add on one of the sponsors here, for GDP regular seeds, back when I was still shopping for seeds to start a grow with. I forget which seed bank it was, but they were advertising I want to say 5 regular (non feminized) seeds for like 75 pounds (it has been a month and half so I am not sure on the specifics). That is a lot to spend on 5 regular seeds. I was tempted but I wanted cheaper seeds to "practice" on with my first grow. :)
However that does not mean I have lost interest in the GDP :)

kens gdp seeds are all regulars he don't make fem seeds
also majority of the gdp seeds you pop will be male
its like playing pin the tail on the donkey
when your drunk and blindfolded
yea you need to be pretty lucky to hit a female

I hear ya... I was happy I had seeds that were given to me, as this is my first time ever growing from seed. I tried germinating in the past a couple times and it didn't work for me, but was also using old seeds so could have been the reason.. (was some darn good strains too..oh well) I hear ya about not wanting to spend a lot to try your 1st run, I felt the same way... I did however reach out to a good buddy of mine, and former member here who gave me a method that worked very well.

Pretty much had a double shotglass filled with water (I used r/o). Dropped the seeds into the water. After about 12 hours, most of the seeds sank and began to crack open slightly..these were the good ones :) So then I grabbed red party cups, filled it with soil (mine was premixed and recycled) and poked a hole in the soil with my pinky finger, down to the 1st knuckle..(so about 1/2 and inch). Then I carefully picked up the seed out of the water, placed it in the hole and brushed lightly some soil over it, just to cover the hole but did not push down. Then I took some regular r/o water and lightly wet the top of the soil, making sure to not disturb the seed, but to thoroughly wet the soil, but not drench it. Then I placed the cups in my tent under the light and waited. I think it took about 4 days to about 1 1/2 weeks for all the seeds to emerge. All of them popped though :)

I've read the same thing...that most people were getting males...even after a couple packs.

I also read in a few places that people were questioning the "original" in his claim, not sure what the story is, but supposedly he released it into the scene in 2003 and I remember smoking it a few years before then... so really not sure.. LOL good old genetics fables :) lol

So I wanted to do a quick update of my other veg tent since I left it out the other day...

So I've been closely watching my 2 cookies plants as they have been hardly sucking up any water and they have gotten a little wilty, so I have been letting them dry out as the other plants were already dry today and needing some water, so I just gave them plain r/o water, fed from the bottom and that was about all.

I also was glad to open my tent today because I noticed that something wasn't right.... I had put the old Igro LED i had from previous tests into the all blue tent to add some red to the spectrum and prevent stretching, and low and behold, guess what...another Igro has bit the dust...center Cob was flashing, just like my others, just like everyone elses.... Man these I=gro lights are crap..so glad they are banned from here.... luckily I still have 4 others so I just swapped it out, but that would be the 3rd one thats failed on me...I guess if all the others fail, at least I have some nice cases to build a DIY LED in :) (Those center COB holes would be great for some CXB chips :) lol gotta look at the bright side...haha (lights..get it) haha.. (no don't actually look at them)

So anyhow here is a look at what I have going on in the other veg tent (all blue LEDs + 1 red).
The Ogiesel and Harlequin are looking really good, but need a little cal mag...
The Black Cherry soda's look good, but possibly need a little K.
The 2 cookies I am monitoring and letting the soil dry out...they need a little love... haha

Ice the plants in that third and fourth pic look awesome brother! Do the leaves naturally look that deep green and waxy? Wow.

The waxy look is typically a sign of high brix plants..... usually they get a sort of plastic/waxy look to them. :)

I may at one point have to learn about soil grows. I am thinking that I may want to go perpetual and in order to keep a mother I may convert a closet indoors into a mother room. For something like that soil seems to be the way to go. That way I could actually leave the area for a couple of days with out fear of disaster. Also it seems like a huge expense for a hydro set up to keep mothers.

Here's one on keeping bonsai mothers you might enjoy reading.

Not to sure about anything related to hydro, but I know it is very easy to keep my mothers alive, well most of the time... I've have had a couple die on me but it was really due to me not being on point and keeping a good eye on them. For the most part you just let them grow, feed them lightly and when they get big just trim them back... You will see this in my later post today/tonight as I just did this to all of my mothers.

Its nice having them though so you can always have clones vegging and plants in flower with 2 areas :) just a word of caution that by increasing your growing area, you may develop the habit to get more plants and strains :) lol
