Icemud's Breeding Projects And Motherchucking Pollination Extravaganza

I run the Xmas Bud from CSI and there are mutants that have those crazy jagged leaves. May be the same gene or something close.
I've seen those mutant's pop up in a few different peoples phenos who have ran the xmas bud.. Odd isn't it. My mutant actually corrected itelf and grew to look like the rest, and actually had one of the strongest terp smells out of the phenos.

Well I ended up putting in an order for more seeds.... I can't help myself! lol

Hazeman had made available some Malawi Gold seeds, and that is one strain I have wanted to add to my collection for some time, therefore I spurged and order a single pack.

Probably wont run them for a while, but wanted to get them while they were available as landraces are getting harder and harder to come by.

The Malawi will be a treat, as it is a pure African Sativa with a clear energetic high and slightly psychoactive. The only thing I haven't figured out is how to time it with other strains, as Malawi is known for being a 14 week finishing time, where most other strains are 7-9. May have to wait on this one until I get more room or put my 3rd grow tent back up.

Anyhow, wanted to share the news, and I believe there are still some of these available too.

...I ran a couple Malawi Gold Auto's a couple years ago...they went 13+weeks and yielded some nice smoke and average quantity for auto's, in my limited experience with them...very strong cat piss smell after initial cure, but did mellow out given more time...I wouldn't be surprised at 15 or 16 weeks for the real deal...if I'm not mistaken, Penny ran some Malawi a year or two ago...:hmmmm:...I still have a few zips vacu-sealed in the stash...lolool...cheerz...:high-five:...h00k...:hookah:...

Hey everyone!!!!

Sorry its been a while since I have updated. Work has had me extremely busy lately and since most of my day is spent on my computer, in my home/apartment, I have not been as motivated to stay on the computer after my work day is done...

Working from home definitely is nice for certain reasons, but the drawback is you lack the social aspect of working in an office or facility, and it seems you can never feel like you left work... the plus is that since California gas is rediculously expensive I am saving some money every week not having to drive anywhere...

So there are benefits and drawbacks.

Anyhow.... lets start with the Apollo 13 F4 project.

The seeds were popped for this project around August 12 so the plants are just about 2 months old from germination. I have already topped them 1x and last night I went in to top them again, as well as check on them and give them a foliar feeding. While I was topping the plants, I gave each "cutting" a good stem rub and squeeze to see how they smell and wow!!! extremely skunky and pungent, I'm excited about these ones!!!

So far it looks like 2 of the 7 are definitely female, 2 are definitely male, 2 aren't quite showing sex to determine and 1 of the plants decided it couldn't wait until flowering... and developed male pollen sacks and actually started to release pollen. (EVEN UNDER 18/6 lighting!!!) crazy!!! I've never seen this before so I took to my IG account and reached out to MotaRebel who released these F4s as well as got opinions from many other growers. It seems that this is fairly common and can be just nature trying to reproduce, it could be rootballing, it could be a genetic mutation, or somehow just an oddity... but quite a few people I have read have had this happen with certain strains. Therefore, I decided I do not want this "trait" to carry on through the open pollenation project so last night I yanked pheno #2 and culled him. Very odd to say the least.

Otherwise the plants look spectacular and I am really thrilled with how they look. Now I just have to wait for my bangi Haze project to finish, which should be done in the next 2-3 weeks max, and then after cleaning the tent I will get started on this project in flowering.

Anyhow, here are a couple photos of the apollo 13, and the odd male.

Refresh my memories Ice....the Apollo breeding project you are running, is it from original straight Apollo? Not the current Apollo Haze they are offering correct?

I can certainly understand not wanting to be on the computer when you are finally done at the end of the day. Its tough to find the motivation to do this stuff after a full day. Cheers bud! :passitleft:

Especially being a compliance officer in the industry for 4 licenses... ugggghhh... LOL. I never thought I would get into the legal industry and hardly smoke any weed (cause too many regs to remember) LOL.

So, these Apollo 13 F4's, I got from a breeder which I normally buy my beans from. He did not create these seeds, but were in his private seed collection that he has put together over many years. I asked him where the Apollo 13 F4 beans came from and he said that he was pretty sure they came from MotaRebel. I spoke with MotaRebel briefly yesterday and he told me that he actually wasn't the breeder on these, and they were bred in Colorado by Mendel. He then told me "he believed that Mendel used 5 different keeper cut females and a few different males to keep the line genetically diverse while keeping her pure"

Apollo 13 is known to be a breeders strain that has a lot of variation but for whatever reason it is known to make almost anything its bred with better.

As far as this lineage, According to Mota Rebel's website, originally Apollo 13 was bred by Bros Grimm. In addition to that information I found this:

In a post from back in 2015 by Mendel on a different forum he says
Hi there everyone, im glad that this line preservation project has been a success. The unique line traits weve tried to preserve have been evident, this great cultivar hasn't been relegated to the history books.

Of course all members of Mota Rebel Genetics team are welcome to use this line in their projects, as well as end users who find this line to be breed-worthy. I have and will be doing some f1 crosses for eval, and encourage such in your endevours.

I will continue to maintain this line probably forever, with large open pollinated breedings, as time and space allows. We will do some lite selections (elimination from groups) but intend NOT to bottleneck this variety. Its just too kick ass.........;)

I will be working with some early breeder steve cultivar preservation projects and some select 'others', as well as doing some outdoor experimentation with high altitude Mexican sativas. We are now developing the infrastruction to get these projects underway.

Your continued support is much appreciated, I can tell from our early work that we had the right mindset and we are glad to say we are getting back on track. our time away has been a struggle, but its evident that the experiances weve had as of late has made us better stewards.

best regards,

mendel

Therefore it seems that this is an F4 worked from the original Bros Grimm cross, but I am not certain. I will ask Mota Rebel to see if they can give me the details and I will let you know what I find out. From what I have learned, it seems to be the original line, that has been preserved with the goal being keeping the variety but also keeping it true to the original cross.

Quick update:

Bangi Haze open pollen project!!!

So the Bangi Haze project is coming into the final stretches and is currently on day 59 of flowering from the flip. All and all most of the plants look to be about ready to harvest for seeds, however the bangi haze keep shooting out white pistils and gaining girth, so I am going to let the project go about 2-3 more weeks and then harvest it.

Overall thus far, I see potential in the Bangi Haze, but the buds are extremely leafy, don't seem to have very many trichomes at all, and have hardly any terps/smell to them. Even taking my fingers and abrasively rubbing a bud I can hardely draw any smell from them at all.

I did notice though that all 3 females have similar growth, but different, and the terps on all 3 are different. My favorite pheno (the one in the front right closes to the camera) has probably the best smell, which resembles a sweet banana mixed with a slight lemon and incense... very exotic smelling. Another pheno has hardly any smell, and smells kind of lemon/sweet with a hint of that piney/mids-smell from the days of mexi brick, and the 3rd one I can't really even get a good sniff of to tell what it smells like... Definitely very weak in the terp strength department, so pretty disappointed thus far with that.

The buds however are nice and have a lot of girth and have stacked nicely so they are developing into some nice spears! This is definitely a good overall trait, and all 3 phenos have been fairly easy to grow with very little issues with nutrients or deficiencies which is nice as well. It may make a great breeding strain, or even the crosses I am making may promote some interesting features so I still am excited for future runs.

Definitely excited for the Apollo 13 project coming up so hopefully these Bangi Haze will stop growing larger and finish soon!!! LOL

Here are some pics....The leaves look a little droopy as I think I made their last nutrient batch a little too hot and gave a little too much water to them, so they aren't perfectly happy with me but they will be ok.

Very interesting....thank you for the most detailed breakdown. I really appreciate it!

I have seen males that drop pollen in veg and have read about them a few times. I have seen Mass Medical Strains and at least one other breeder mention that they do not use any male that flowers under veg times. I am glad you decided to take him out of the tent.

Yea I posted the photo on my IG and a few people chimed in and mentioned its fairly common. I too also heard a few people mention they never use them for breeding, so I did the right thing and yanked her. I'm sure my plants don't mind having some extra space to sprawl out too :)
