Thanksgiving week is here, so here's a
HYENA'S GROW HOUSE update!
Finally getting some real action in the flowering tent #1...
BIG blossoms everywhere...the canopy rising a bit more, to just about the perfect height...
And loads and loads of nodes!
This new
SATURN 5 strain has quite a few variations within the first 12 individuals but the primary similarity is very densely packed branches with lots of closely-spaced nodes! Only 4 weeks since the flip...very vigorous and all look super healthy. Looks maybe like that 8-week finishing time might be expressing in these. That would be another big plus for this strain...
But looking very good down the branch:
And there are multiple distinctly different bud shapes among other aspects...
There are more but as an example, each of these 3 bud structures has a different smell! Plus other variations. Again it blows me away that such diversity could emerge from the crossing of two or three plants. All 12 seeds came from 3 plants (the two that produced the biggest yields plus 2 randoms), so not exactly sure but I could have 4 sets of genes here. Plus, many different genetic packages are possible (even likely) whenever 2 plants cross so I'm trying to correlate the differences I observe with the possible parents, trying to figure out who came from who, kind of like being a social worker on the West side.
I'll keep you posted.
Meanwhile, in Tent #2, the exact same grow just about a month behind...
These clones are taking off nicely and looking pretty good. Still very compact...even though they started as branches instead of seeds, it seems the typical cannabis plant structure emerges after awhile, probably due to the principle of the apical bud leading the rest of the plant. Pretty cool.
On defoliation: After countless experiments I'm convinced skillful defoliation plays a big role in how productive a plant becomes, especially in a dense canopy. My guiding principle has become,
remove a leaf if it will reveal a branch. This simple rule allows me to go quickly through my plants and get light to more and more growing tips, plus the added benefit of better air circulation. It has not seemed to slow or reduce the growth of anything (even some brutal defols on a number of plants), but I also stop well short of removing them all like some folks do. I believe they are important for producing the food necessary for buds to develop so I leave those that aren't blocking the upward growth of branches. Just my way but it works and keeps the act of defoliation reasonable.
After a good defoliation they look a bit different but still happy:
Only another few weeks before I'll be cloning from these, once the very most clone-worthy ones reveal themselves in Tent #1. Which they're doing. Very excited.
So Happy Thanksgiving...
I meant Danksgiving of course. I have already prepared the Turkey...
I know I'm thankful.
Peace, Hyena
