Homer's Legal 4-Plant Max Perpetual Minimalist Garden In Ontario

I was given nasal spray too haha.
Make sure you vacuum is on suck and not blow, that wouldn't be fun. I still think a clear garbage bag around the base and used as a bubble to keep pollen inside the bag is a good idea in general. Only would work tho with a whole plant. Cant see a bag full of pollen being good on a whole plant unless u want a billion seeds.
Luckily my hose connections are idiot-proof and not interchangeable so blowing will not be an issue but that would be right out of an episode of the Simpsons, lol... D'oh!

I don't really understand what you mean a garbage bag around the base because wouldn't that include the pot? Maybe I could split one and retape it around the trunk? You guys are making me realize my plan is not as comprehensive as I had deluded myself it was. I was thinking of doing the collecting in the closet but I like the bag idea to get it outside to collect. But wouldn't the pollen stick the all the insides of the bag and not fall to the bottom because I thought pollen was kind of sticky to attach to the female?

Take clear garbage bag, place it on floor, open.
Put the plant container and the plant in bag, still open. When the time comes to collect pollen tie up bag around the plant, shake pollen off plant. Let it settle. Open bag and remove plant slowly.
Tie bag again. Move all collected pollen in bag onto 1 corner of bag. Then transfer it into a new container for later use. Hope that made sense lol

I agree that would be a good way to trap things but my concern would be with the pot in the bag for a while since I use fabric pots there would be leakage and scum from the pot runoff.

Very true. Nevermind then lol

Appreciate the input though. I am thinking of maybe spitting the bottom of the bag and taping it around the trunk so I could wrap it up in the bag and then cut the trunk which is just a variation of your idea. :high-five:

I'm only going to reverse a branch, not the entire plant. My plan for collection is to put a clear bag over the branch just before the sacks open. I'll use a neoprene net pot insert at the base of the branch to fasten the open end of the bag. When there's enough pollen in the bag, I'll cut the branch below the insert, turn it insert up, give it a shake, and hang it for a day or two before opening the bag.

I will try this also, was worried lasttime cause the lack of air in bag and condensation inside the bag. But you used a foam insert, likely to let air in/out. I gotta go get some of those.

Hmmmm... That is a good idea to seal it up completely before the pods open with a clear bag but I just remembered I have a small aquarium air pump and I could use it to supply fresh air to the bag so the plant has co2 and doesn't get all humid. I just have to find some kind of material to filter the pollen out of the exhaust. Thanks for the suggestion Old Salt.

The plastic bag won't harm them for a few days, when the sacs open cut the stem and slip the whole thing over a branch with female flowers and seal it with a wrist tie. Shake it well and she's pollinated no mess or fuss.

Oh, ok. I thought it would take more than a few days for the sacs to open so I guess I won't bother with the air pump.

Fyi pollen is seriously dust.
I was just reading about the size of cannabis pollen and it is, 25 to 30 microns according to marijuana botany chapter 1, which is slightly less than 1/1000 of an inch.

You'll see the pollen sacs getting fatter, shouldn't be hard to time it out.
I will keep a look out for that. Does the bag not get filled with too much humidity from the leaves?

No shouldn't, if it does open it slowly and air it out.
Ok. Sounds like with everyone's input I am getting a pretty good no pollen contamination solution. The wisdom of the group!! :thumb:

Darn! There goes that idea, before it even gets off of the ground. I was thinking 25 micron filter bags such as I can use for rosin might work as an exit filter for you.

Perhaps a dust mask with an N95 rating will work. They are cheap, and filter out at least 95% of 0.3 micron test particles. They should work as an exit filter for the bag. I'm thinking duct tape to the inside of the bag.

I was thinking of rosin bags myself but mine are 90 microns. I was reading that coffee filters are good to 20 microns so that may work but yes, I do have a good assortment of dust filters for masks in the garage so I might use one of those. I think the cheap pink ones might do the job but will have to check how fine they are.

Looks like these will work just fine. "The 3M 2097 P100 Filters fit on the 3M 6000 and 3M 7500 Series Half Masks, as well as the 3M 6000 Full Face Respirators. HEPA filtration is rated to remove 99.9% of particles .3 microns and larger."

Best part of my plan is I have all the parts and materials I will need. Being a cheapskate that is critical. :nerd-with-glasses:
