I've rooted cuttings in perlite with a bit of vermiculite mixed in to help hold water (the cups were "traditional," that is to say, couple drain holes on the bottom instead of a hempy-style reservoir).
I didn't dip them into Clonex, though. Used Olivia's Cloning Gel. Or sometimes nothing.
Perlite works. Soil works. A cup of water works. A bit of damp peat moss wrapped around a purposely injured section of branch (while it's still attached) works, see: air layering. Allowing part of a branch (that's still attached to the plant) to lay on the ground for a little too long works. <SHRUGS> It's just rooting a cutting - it's not so much "getting the things to live" as it is stepping back and allowing them to do so. People worry too much about details. Feed the mother, wait a few hours, take the cuttings, and place them somewhere that allows them access to water through the stem.
Life is programmed to continue. Otherwise, none of it would still exist. . . .
