Hempy Headquarters

GH Flora Trio at about 1/2 strength
Plus calmag, Terpinator and a bit of koolbloom
Water is RO and starts at around 6.5-6.7ish

One thing to keep in mind... as your plant 'eats', the ph of the water in the pot will shift with PH numbers rising. I start pretty low and as the PH rises, it passes thru the various nutrient uptake ranges.

Since any remaining water in a hempy pot is flushed out upon frequent feeding I think I'll just keep things simple and free my mind to focus on what goes in :passitleft:

I've read about issues with nutrient lockout, perhaps not with hempies? If ph and ppm are correct going in how can any lockout occur? With soil, I'd assume it was mostly due to folks over-thinking their applications? :ganjamon:

I've seen other people tape the hole untill the tap root reaches the bottom then remove the tape. I always start in rook wool then to solo cup hempy then to 2lt pop bottles

Careful with this...I did this at first and put the plant in and watered. Removed the tape and the perlite caved in along with the new plant.

Moral of the story...make sure the medium is sufficiently settled.

I water until runoff. Read somewhere that as the roots drink the ph swings nicely to allow uptake then with watering the ph goes back to baseline to start over. I have good results so far at 5.8.

EDIT- sorry didn’t see vtwin’s response before posting.

It isn’t really necessary to tape the hole anyway. Solution will wick up from the reservoir. Also, more fresh air will be pulled into the root zone if the solution can flow freely through the pot and out the hole.

Thank you Felipe, for the clarification, and the supplement to my buzz.

The perlite is very efficient at wicking the nutrient-rich water up to surround the roots. I've always assumed one of the keys to success was that the perlite left plenty of room for oxygen to accumulate. Makes me nervous to tape the hole. Lol! I think of the hole as a passage for more oxygen.

We know the most efficient wicking is to 8", and there's been no real problems along our journey using the reservoirs with regular waterings. There are times in flower where I don't even pay attention to the 10% runoff rule, and stop as soon as they start to overflow. So far it's worked well for me.

Lots of wiggle room with hempy.

I've dropped ph down to 5.5 and been watering frequently enough to get the roots moving down to their new home. They are on there way back from shock and possible lock out.

EDIT: Whoops, it was addressed almost immediately (note to self: stop posting replies before reading to the current end of the thread!).

The watering around the plant once or twice a day until the roots hit the reservoir is a bit of a pain but the few I’ve tried so far hit the water in a few days, then just water like a normal plant.

I can’t for the life of me figure out why you guys continue to do that. If you saturate the perlite when you plant either seed or cutting it activates the wicking process. There’s no need to pamper the seedling. It’ll grab for the moist perlite in search of food and water, just as it’s programmed to do. Now a tall pot might be another matter.

As long as you regularly replenish the reservoir physics takes care of watering the rootless.

I’m glad to hear that Buck. It pains each of us to see a neighbor struggle. Wonderful how they bounce back. :green_heart:

My girls vegging in the corner of BrixNewb’s tent - the two on the back left are Dark Devil Autos, the one next to them on the back wall is Carnival 6.1.

In the flowering tent we have Royal Gorilla, front left, Candy Cane, front right, and Carnival 6 on the back wall.

I flew out this morning to visit beez and his wife, and Carnival 6 decided to send me off with a big, broad, blooming smile.

She’ll flower without me for the first three weeks. BrixNewb’s stepping in to watch over the brood while I’m gone.

They’re in good hands.

@SweetSue. I know you’re right but I Just can’t help myself!!! LOL.

I’m actually starting to get out of the habit mostly out of forgetting but also seeing that they’re fine without it. I’m still new at hempy but loving the ease...almost too good to be true.

No more walks of shame at the local nursery as I carry 8 bags of Happy Frog to the counter at $8 a bag. Much easier buying 2 cf for $16 at the box store.

My last 2 clones have roots in soil and will be switched to hempy this week.

Meanwhile this girl rooted in 10 days and isn’t waiting around.

Another happy hempy convert!

Ya know, there’s at least two types of growers - one who will figure out what the plant needs, and easily provides it in the most straight-forward way possible, and another who will worked far harder to chase some possible marginal difference in aroma, taste, or high.

Me, I generally buy wine at $20 a bottle or less, and I grow hempy.

Hempy is crazy easy, especially since I ditched all the expensive bottles with cool labels.

Using perlite and Jack’s Classic is like growing for free with zero effort.

BTW- Regular Old Jack’s works great on hempy. Add some CM and ph to 5.8. No issues whatsoever.

I am chomping at the hempy bit, now have most of my hempy ducks are in a row... ph and ppm meter, up/dn solution, perlite, Foxfarm nutes, grow light, seeds and a solo cup. I have some peat plugs too but haven't decided to use them, just put the seed in the solo cup.... yesterday I dropped one seed into distilled water it took over 12 hrs before it sunk, will put in the wet paper towels this afternoon. As I am living in a townhouse until May this seed may never see harvest but I wanted to study progress as long as conditions permit.

The seed is a relatively fast auto I got for free, gives me some cheap entertainment to help ward off cabin fever, as does this great forum. I had never ph'd my well water, the new meter showed 6.7 with just 16ppm tds. In past years my shallow well water had become somewhat clouded with tannin which is common in northern Michigan but after not living in the house for over a year now the water has cleared up and tastes way better than the city water in the townhouse (which has a ph of 8). Even when the tannin was obvious the well water tasted great and we used it for everything as usual except for making ice cubes.... they would look a tad funky.

There are many benefits to being an experienced hempy grower.
One of the less obvious benefits is just watching the excitement other growers when they're first dipping their toes into the hempy waters.
Fun stuff.
How’s those 5gal buckets doing? I was inspired by your latest pics and picked up a few 3.5gal buckets myself (I usually use 2gal). I don’t have the headroom for 5s, but want larger plants this round.
