Hey HyHy. So, this will be my first year searching for mommas. How long do you keep moms actively growing before chucking them? Also, why toss them? Why not grow them out or would it be possible to root prune and keep growing her out long tern?so I went ahead and tossed the last mom I had. Poor thing was so root-bound. Relieved to have some good clones once again!

Hey Baked, I am totally happy to answer any questions if I can, so you have nothing to apologize for.
So far, the only mom I have been keeping is Candida, because we can’t seem to get original seeds anymore.
For a while I would root a new clone and then flower the ‘mom’ with some other fem seeds. Then last year, for one grow, I grew out 6 clones of the Candida. I still have buds a-plenty from that grow, so I don’t want to flower any out for now. But, I will keep her going with the cloning, for as long as I can.
The reason I’m using this method of cuttings - rooting - toss old mom, is for (1) space purposes. The cuttings take up so little of space. (2) I am a bit of a lazy grower, and while the trimming - root pruning method would be effective, I just find this method easier and less intimidating, for me.
I do have some seeds that I’m interested to keep new moms of in the future. For example, peyote forum. So I’ll plant, veg and then just before flip, I’ll take some cuttings. I’ll keep one cutting/clone going, like on standby, while I flower out the original PF, harvest, and really try it out to see what I think. If I like it, I’ll keep it going with the cloning/flowering. If not, I’ll have to toss. Lol, I hope that all made sense..

That's where I'm at right now. I have little seedlings of some genetics I'm excited about. I have not figured out what my space limitations are quite yet. I'd like to keep clones of every female I end up getting and keep them going until I have harvested and cured their flower. I just know that is a very long time trying to keep moms happy and healthy. I know many can do it for years from what I have heard. My goal would be to have a dedicated space for my mommas.

A thing happened. A good thing happened.
This is the start of a haphazard, ass-backward, grow! Lol, I say that because I don’t know which tent these girls will go into, under which lights, and maybe I’ll buy a different tent? Many things yet to be figured out, but here we are, jumping in with both feet!
I’m stoned story telling here, so get yourselves settled in.
Yesterday I sat down with my bag o seeds, trying to figure out who makes the cut. It’s been quite a while since I’ve grown any of my fems, so I’ve compiled quite a to-grow list. A few DNA/Crockett’s family farm, that I’ve been eager to try. Some that are supposed to be good for pain, some that I’ve grown before and really like. Plus I’m so bad at making decisions.I eliminated a few, but still way too many in front of me, so I asked Mr. H to please help me. And he did…. He usually has very little input, in fact I already asked him two other times to help. Anyway, so he starts talking about each one, tossing packets into yes and no piles. I can’t even begin to think, there’s so much talking and options being thrown at me! Before I know it, he’s gotten five in the yes pile. I barely have time to second guess these choices and he’s getting labels and cups ready! It really happened so fast. Pretty surprising for me, because he’s usually even worse at making decisions than I am! But here we are, on our way to the next grow.
The ladies that made the cut are:
- sour diesel
- cherry 18
- gelato
- critical mass
- blood orange sorbet
I’ll get some info together on each of these in a bit. There’s no rhyme or reason, other than I want it and Mr. H chose it. After the seeds were dropped, I realized I didn’t even look at the seeds I’ve gotten from my seed fairies!!
I’m going to have to have a dedicated “from my girls” grow, because there are quite a few on my want-to-grow list in that bundle too.Phew! Now I need to decide who goes where. I also need to figure out my timelines, because we’ll be getting into hot summer months. Humidity and heat have been expensive to control, especially last summer. I have an idea, I just need to make sure it all will fit.
I’m also going to be trying a new grow medium and nutes. It’s actually a super soil called Sohum living soil. I know very little about it, I just read a lot of reviews that highly recommended it for cannabis. That’s all it took, I’m in. I’m a lazy grower and I’ve been wanting to try a water only, soil for a while. With MC changing for the worse, it’s time for me to change too. I’ll be starting them off in some happy frog soil, because the reviews said the sohum can be too hot for seedlings. And that’s what I’ve got so far!

I’m usually the one that makes the picks I do ask Mrs. N sometimes and after I show her what I’m thinking she usually says “ I don’t know they look good “ lol. Ok I guess I’m on my own lol.

Hi again grow buddies! Fast update today. After soaking for 24 hours, the seeds were moved to some jiffy pellets.
What an exciting photo
It was dimly lit in the room I was in, but I do believe 4/5 had tails. Sour diesel was the only solid seed. The most exciting part for me was that cherry 18 had a tail! Last time I bought these, all three were duds. They sent me a replacement pack, so I’m glad these ones seem to be viable.
Now begins the watch for pop ups. Hope all is well in your gardens and beyond.
