Haight Solid State vs. H.G.LED

Thank you.:bongrip:

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

It is a good medium. I am using 60/40 perlite to coco in bato buckets and feeding with GH Flora series hydroponic nutrients. I'm not settled on that ratio yet - I may want to use a little less coco and drip feed them frequently.

The medium holds enough moisture to remain fairly stable and I am using very large chunks of perlite that tend to stay in position well when combined with the coco. Plus, I water before it dries out completely so the root mass is holding some moisture between pockets of air and the bucket's reservoir contains water, adding weight. Hydroton can be used as a top dressing to further hold roots in place. I plan to stake a tall, narrow vertical screen into each bucket to keep the buds away from the vertically oriented bulbs and provide added stability.

Are you doing any PH checking with that medium and the GH Flora nutes?

I'm pretty excited about vertical HID bulbs. Your vertical screen/trellises sound like a great idea for both keeping the plants away from the bulb and stability.

thanks bro ;)

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

.92 is about as good as it can get with that light. She claims she knows people that pull 1.8 grams per watt and thats the mean supporting reason she makes my blood biol. Its all a damn lie. I watched this from start to finish and nothing could have been better to improve yields.

HSS on the other hand is clearly a POS, sorry to say it, dont mean to offend anyone.

I ph RO to 5.5 and runoff is coming out about 6.3. I'm loading them at about 1.2 EC at the forth week of veg now.

Great smoke report BTW. I bet you must be really excited about this next grow should be a great show!

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

What a fantastic demonstration - mad props to setting sun for his flawless execution while under the spotlight ;)

Would never have gotten here without all of your support, help, suggestions and advice.

thank you brother Soniq ;)

;)

That should be interesting.

I think so too.

For me, 300w may be the sweet spot for the size of my tents and how much energy I'm willing to use. I'd like to keep total light watts under 600 while running both tents, and the 300w LED, if it produces, would fit right into that plan, especially in the summer.

Of Course we will!:thumb::thumb::thumb:

;)

420magazine/Setting Sun:
Any thoughts about complementing the next grow with audio/video snippets?
This would assist those like me who struggle with dyslexia or are challenged with reading comprehension. Just an idea.

A very good idea. I'll check into it and see if we can do something like that.

I'd love to do video updates, but need to check on the logistics.

If so, all I ask is that Setting Sun keeps his clothes on...my mother in-law reported that he has some peculiar proclivities about gardening in the buff.

I guess she didn't buy the bug prevention explanation ;)

i think two 180's would kick ass and you would get more covarge area, their for grow bigger plants and get fatter buds:thumb:

300w would be cool to see also against a 400w hps. cant wait to see this one

Two 180's would give better coverage, but personally, I prefer the symmetry of testing two lights against each other. There's no logic to it, it's an OCD thing ;).

thanks bro!

This was an awesome comp grow and the next installment is gonna be excellent. SS is turned loose to tweak to his hearts content. :thumb:

Definitely grabbing a chair for the new grow Setting Sun.
Don't forget to wear a hard hat, lol....:peacetwo:

Yep, it's gonna be fun to lose the handcuffs and go for it ;)

glad you're gonna be onboard!

Cant wait. It looks as though im going to spend another 3 months glued to the pc waiting for SS's new pics and comments!!!

This grow's been a blast, and I'm hoping the next one's gonna be even better!

thanks Maccar ;)

So both the lights come in at HGL 0.92gpw and HSS 0.25gpw.

Massive difference there.

Botanist85 im new to growing so forgive my stupidity, but i have read time and time again on this thread that people believe larger yields could be achieved with a sog or scrog. Is this not your opinion? Just asking because i have a similar light to the hgl and was planning to make my next grow scrog so any information you could throw my way would be appreciated.

Thanks again SS. Amazing job. Enjoy your new benchmark!! :thumb: :rasta:

Botanist85 dose a SOG grow with low powered leds, he was just referring to that one led company in gernal. you can click on his sig at the bottom for his thread link

IMO LST SOG and SCROG are very good ways to increase yield with any lights but really good for leds because they lack in penetration. the LST (bending) method seems to be doing great for me and my leds so far.
ive seen a few SCROG leds grow that turned out great.
and ive seen some real high nuber using SOG with leds.

it all comes down to you as a grower and ur environment you have them growing in,

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

A few observations (see table below)

  • The wet to dry weight loss ratio is about 62% for this LED grow as opposed to the 75% rule of thumb that most people are used to. Water loss was remarkably consistent on a plant to plant basis.
  • The final g/w results (less any hash setting sun makes from the trim) were 3.6 times better for HGL than HSS when compared on a g/w basis
  • The gross weight results were 2.4 times better for HGL when not normalized for wattage differences.
  • The HSS costs $495 or $2.61 per watt, the HGL costs $475 or $3.77 per watt.
  • Depending on whether one is concerned about the fixed cost of initial purchase or the ongoing cost of electricity differential, the HGL outpaced the HSS light by a multiple of between 2.4 and 3.6; depending on how strongly the reader factors in his fixed costs.
  • HSS should get more hash as they had much more trim (tbd)
  • The biomass ratio (finished buds divided by total wet weight of the plant) was about 50% better for the HGL compared to the HSS. Essentially 15.2% of the total growth was bud for HGL while 9.1% was bud for HSS
  • The oddball sativa phenomenon did not skew results as its output was tucked neatly near the median for all measure categories
  • The HSS was more consistent for all plants grown, albeit to lesser weights (see the coefficient of variation and standard deviation values in table)

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

Thank You SS, all the folks at 420 magazine, and our sponsors, for making this happen. Great journal - I learned so much!

I love the description of the next grow-off not only because we'll get to see an LED and HID side-by-side, but because SS will be let loose to apply whatever growing technique seems most appropriate. Feels like I just signed up for a college course I'm excited about and now I can't wait for the semester to start. Honestly, I'd pay money for this!

Thanks again ;)

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

I've been lurking throughout this grow and have been nothing but amazed by the detail provided and the support of the community.

And let me say that I've NEVER seen a thread on any other forum go for 117 pages without ONE flame war.

Thank you all for teaching me so much.

What a fantastic demonstration - mad props to setting sun for his flawless execution while under the spotlight ;)

While we await the final weights and measures, we thought we might generate a bit of buzz for setting sun's next project :surf:

420 Magazine is pleased to announce the next installment in our ongoing series of competitions and demonstrations.

:cheertwo:GrowLEDHydro's 300 watt vs. 400 watt HPS:cheertwo:

We're still hashing out the details and are open to feedback ;) However our overarching goal in this next demonstration is to optimize each tent for maximum yield as opposed to controlling for identical inputs. We'll rely on setting sun's experience with HPS in one tent and utilize GrowLEDHydro's set points and instructions in the other tent.

We hope you'll all stop by the new thread, when it's launched later in April, and join in with the adventure :yummy:
That will be interesting !! Good show SS !!

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

Thank you.:bongrip:

My pleasure bro ;)

great job brother. very nice gpw

so do u think its easier to get .92gpw with leds over hps? whats ur take on that.

very very nice job brother.

I really don't have enough personal experience to accurately answer that question..........................yet ;). I hope to have a better feel for that after the upcoming LED/HID showdown.

thank you brother ;)

Thanks for the details on your nutes and PH.

I'm extremely excited about the next grow. The focus will be LED vs HID, which was a comparison we strived to discourage in this grow, but that *will* be the focus of the next comparison, so I'm really looking forward to everyone being able to discuss that freely.

I'm also looking forward to growing with higher watts, and having more freedom to do things the way I want.

thank you slimm ;)

Not speaking for Botanist85, but I believe yields can be improved by using more horizontal grow methods and keeping plants short.

thank you Maccar ;)

p.s. it will be at great personal sacrifice, but I will continue to research my new benchmark ;)

This grow has sold me on one thing: Violator Kush. That's at the top of my seed shopping list to stay now. The LEDs I'm not so sure about...

Thanks a million for the excellent final report.

you're very welcome Bolivar ;)

VK is a great strain IMO, and will probably grace my grow room again in the future. I think the extensive branching and secondary buds it displayed in the HGL tent was the reason for the .92g/w, since the main colas weren't really that big.

The heavy branching makes it an ideal candidate for LST or SCROG. These ladies like being bent over even more than most ;).

It's been great having you along for the ride usul ;).

I'm changing things up for the next grow and I'm looking forward to sharing my thoughts and ideas, as well as learning from those following as I did on this grow.

The give and take from everyone on this grow was simply awesome!

hope to see you there for the next one!
