Growing A Legend: An Auto Tribute To Jack Herer

I think you guys are looking at my pots from a different angle than me. As far as I know, the ruderalis's flowering is nature, not nurture - it flowers when it flowers. What I want to nurture is the root system by preventing plants from getting root-bound, and hopefully in the doing, work toward maximizing growing conditions in a small space.
Whether or not it's making a difference, and if so how much, I'm not sure yet. When I know, you'll know, you know?

I'm with you Flytie. Biggest plant I grew was in the biggest pot I had. Flowered in the same number of days as its smaller neighbor, same strain.

That's the impression I had when i read up on it. Having said that, I'm trying to avoid using large spaces, so I made some nice 6L planters that air-prune, designed specifically to promote a nice healthy taproot without getting root-bound in the process. The plants that had good starts (post-insulation) are looking nice and healthy, but they were transplanted from those crappy, brittle white containers that crack almost on contact - but I digress...

But anyway, I'm doing what I can to optimize things before we start.

You can grow them under 12/12 but you obv won't get the production you would under 20/4. More light= more bud!

But we're doing this to see how the same strain (in name, anyway - we have two different suppliers) does under different growing conditions. That qualifies. We can see if it's worth doing again. May be good to know if you want to fill a hole in a crop sometime.

Indeed! I was not trying to dissuade Fert from growing, just trying to give an honest answer to the question. We're all guinea pigs!

I'm still in the testing stage of the pot I'll be using. But I'll always be making tweaks and changes here and there anyway. This whole thing will probably give me more ideas to try out.

I'm going to try a fabric pot! Soil about the size of a solo cup then coco around it then top off with a layer of perlite! . so excited

Increased depth should help. Planter width has a lot to do with how wide a plant will open up. Plants will try to grow as wide as there root system is. Pruning and training can curb this though. Good luck.

If they grow as wide as their root system or even a bit wider then I'll get pretty much what I'm looking for. I'll be able to cram things into my small growspace.

How do autos do under 12/12? If I am going to do this, I plan on putting it into the same tent with my photoperiod flowering plants so it'd be stuck under 12/12. From what I understand that really robs a lot of what an auto can do.

I will be doing mine the same way Fert. I will start mine in my vegging area under 18-6 and once pistils start showing I should be about ready to move them in with my photos that should be just about ready to start flipping. Also check your messages Fert, Illizm, InTheShed, and Dabber. I will be sending you guys a message here in a bit. We gotta get our game plan together so we can kick our crazy canadian neighbors asses on this grow! LOL

If there are any more Americans that are interested in doing this group grow with us, please let me know via PM.

Well I have never grown an auto so it will all new to me. I am looking forward to trying it. Should be interesting to see the different results in different growing conditions for both versions of it. The downfall is we can't all get together and sample all the different results and compare to see which style and medium and version produced the best bud.

Apropos of the tap root question, the Vice President of the Oregon Sun Grower's Association is of the belief that the cannabis roots only need 16" of depth. I don't know if that applies to the ruderalis side of the plant, but it doesn't make sense that the tap roots in Russia hit a "bottom" before going into flower.

I can tell you that anyone growing 12/12 is not going to be helping to kick Canadian butt! Shhh...maybe we should back off the contest aspect if we're going to lose ;)

Can one really lose when growing cannabis (legally anyways)? I don't know, I like to talk a little smack to my canadian neighbors....all in good fun! And for all they know I could be trying to give them a false sense of security "Ah van and company down south are idiots...they are growing in 12/12, we are going to kick their asses" LOL

I can't speak to auto flowers, but I've seen the tap-root hit bottom in a pot in no time at all in a photo-period so I wouldn't believe they would be ready to flower by that time. I tried my hand at 12/12 from seed with photoperiods, and the thing about that is they generally begin flowering in 3 weeks, but I remember very clearly seeing roots coming out of the bottom of the pots before that.

Yeah, I've seen this already and it seems to go against what I read, but I'll chalk it up to different ways of doing the same thing.
