Every time I've popped seeds, I just plant into the soil. Every time, I plant more than I think I'll need in case a few don't germinate, and I can only remember a couple times I didn't get 100% of the seeds I planted popped.
I'm not trying to advocate for it, but I just went with planting them from the start and never had any reason to soak or mess with the paper towels.
1. Put seed in a container with 320 grit sandpaper and just shake it around in it
2. Plant seed at most twice as deep as the seed is wide
3. Put a sandwich bag on the top for a humidity dome
Not sure how long it usually takes, I think the earliest is 2-3 days, maybe sometimes a few seeds will take closer to a week.
Maybe if this one doesn't germinate I'll be more convinced to do the soaking and what not, but so far I've just never been convinced that it's necessary. In my opinion the most important factor is scarification and not planting too deep. Scarification helps the seed soak up water quicker ( probably what soaking will accomplish ) and planting it shallow will ensure that it breaks surface without exhausting its endosperm ( the seed's food ).
That's my take on it. We'll see if I have to eat crow in a couple of days haha
