what i mean is why do we keep to a 24 hour clock, as the plants grow under 24-0 this shows they are not set to the 24 hour cycle at all else they would not grow under constant light, so whats stopping us say giving them a 30 hour day, making a timer would not be to hard as long as you under stand how to do it, their are a few guides on the net that show how to alter timers. so what im wondering is do plants need 12-12 to flower or do they only flower when the day and night hours are the same say 14-14, or do the plants only flower when given 12 hours of dark and no more, so could we then extend the day and give the plants 14 hours of light and 12 hours of dark.

i know it would be a pain in the arse to set up but as soon as a timer had been engineered with different gears then it would not be to hard to keep to, i know it would not run inline with out 24 hours so this would need sorting out for watering and making sure you dont open the grow door when the lights are off, but im pretty sure it would not take much to mess around with an old analogue timer and change the it from 24 hours to say 30 hours, it would just need some messing around with to get the timer to run for 30 hours,

i getcha mate, but i still beieve my dark battery analogy applies, i think you can play a certain amount, but there will be an end game. itall depends on if you switch the lights off and do not put them back on again, how long till flowering is past the point of no return...that will be your limit i think...although they may not be superglued to 24 hours they are anchored to it because of ancestry and it would take many succesive generations of breeding pushing the limit of lighting to change their behaviour for good.

mini update

i have repotted these two tiny clones, the healthier looking one on the left doesnt have any roots but is surviving outside a dome oO the other has a single hair sized root.
they are both now in my very first basic DWC tubs, they are way too small for 2l types atm, so ill just move them as they grow. im using vermi as my medium and thin cardboard to hold it all above the res. will post pics tommorow as they went into the room just as the lights went off =/

the afghan in the bin sized air pot lost its tallest tip! its now in vermiculite with a dome over it in preperation to be DWC's also if it will root. turns out my giga pots fit just nicely in a 2l diy dome =D

Love the idea of investigating working on a different day length and the numerous combinations that would make available. First I am going to concentrate on harvesting as close to a gm per watt as I can. There are so many combinations of timings, nutrients, medium, temperatures and sound not to mention strains and taking the light from the moon into account, without complicating it further.

When I am consistently harvesting 1gm/w I will then concentrate purely on quality, and only then, if I can still be bothered after sampling the finest weed, will I investigate simulating a daily cycle of another planet.(?)

Looking at the varying wavelength of sunlight depending on time of year and altitude could be worthwhile, do you go for what happens where the best weed comes from? Or do you alter it for different strains, how do you combine natural conditions for hybrid Indica/Sativa plants?

You have got to stop molesting your under-aged Girls, just stop it!! It will stop when you harvest the Autos I suspect. The Evolution of the MeGaGiGaPoT looks very promising! I have Strawberry plants done in the trollies so I can move them round to catch the Autumn and Spring morning and afternoon sunshine rather than making a quick getaway!

lol yeah it will stop when i harvest the autos. to be honest tho its well worth it. if i had money to spend on bud equivelant, smoking leaves has probably saved me around £200 pounds of buying from dubious sources. its just enough to take the edge off and prevent me doing something desperate and dumb to aquire some money.


minor update about vermiculite and gigapots...my waste bin size ones are still too moist to water again, this is not a good thing as it means water is now hanging around to become stagnant. i have not yet perfected the ratio but the biga the giga the more perlite to vermiculite should be used

I’m sure we’ve all been there to a certain degree, and yes it takes an edge off, but it’s a bit like going back to dial-up after getting used to broadband, there’s a hit, but very narrow bandwidth!

make sure when you mist the plant 2 or 3 times a day that you only mist the plant and not the soil, mist the soil once a day just to keep it slightly moist, you dont want it to wet else the roots wont grow, it might take 2 weeks to root as well so leave the dome on, you will notice the leaves looking weird and going rubbery, but this is ok and it means the roots are growing, so keep spraying the clone 2 or 3 times a day with a fine mist of water, make sure you soak the clone as well so its pretty wet, then mist inside the dome, this should push the humidity up to around 100%, you could also use a smaller dome as this would keep it more humid as their would be less air, the clone wont grow while its rooting so it only needs to be bigger than the clone.

arg its planted in vermiculite that has been watered with a weak nute solution, i will raise my dome (it grips the gigapot nicely) so that the side of the pot is exposed to air, this will help it dry out quicker and then i will mist beyond that. been taking the dome off twice a day to swap the air, havnt put any water on the plant itself yet as there is no sign of it being thirsty at all.

i have decided to abandon GLR for now due the the fact im running fems and autos in the same area, will be goin for 18 hours of light, only a few quid more and should boost auto production. =)

Hey Giga, I put 6 plants outside on july 7th.....just harvested 2, 4 more goin, expect to harvest them in 30 days. 3 of em are mexican bag seeds, and one of those is a monster. I bred it with bubblegum kush, I'm hoping it bred true, it has about 20 seeds on it and I'll start em in the spring after I move. The monster lady is only 3 feet tall, hardy, stocky, and covered with sugary fruit. It's not that aromatic either, But I can see how it's gonna finish.........I have a bubblegum clone that I took from a plant in bloom. It took 2 months to come out of it ( bloom) It's 1 foot tall and has a couple ozs on it. I'm new at this so I'm trying things to see what I can get away with......

Incomplete update

hi guys, wanted my new grow area to be a suprise, but to be honest im knackered and did not get as far as i wanted.

if my clones root i now have over 20 plants and at least 1 or 2 more clones to be had...
a lot of them will be heading in the direction of DWC if i feel i can get the hang of it and i may just use shredded paper as the medium to hold the plant above the water as soil/perlite/vermiculite need gizmos in place to prevent the medium falling into the water and i like simple.

Meet the kids old bunk beds. The lower bedframe has been removed for the space. The top frame allows me to hang cfl's, mount my striplights and allow all hot air to leave the grow room unrestricted....i may hang a white bed sheet over the top, which is about a foot above the bed frame, this will allow heat to leave but light to bounce back. I will be completely sealing this grow area on all sides, with the near side openable, this will allow me to drench the entire area with co2 with minimal loss and if i go for a yeast based co2 gen, it can sit on top of the bed frame and absorb all that lovely heat and pay back the energy loss in incresed co2 production =D

The other 4, the bottom right one is retarded because my last attempt to use yeast co2 i smacked it one with the hosepipe and it snapped the tap root =(, its recovering tho.

This is my dela haze no2, the one that looked rather spindley and stragely shaped, bugger it i topped it to allow it a fresh start, however the stalks that were going to be rooted, the bloody dog decided they would make a good snack because i put them on a plate, lol

This is my topping experiment plant, the 4 tops were just about long enough to to root so i took them today and am trying to root them using a new method....the pic below this one is the tops

These are the clones i took while still up in the attic (the ones in little orange pots) my first attempt of DWC, but im not holding my breath as they were cut the old way, one does have a root tho, we shall see.

the two pink tubs left and right are my old indica clones that seem to be behaving well. these are going to be my real DWC testers. the central one is my sativa clone that was all warped and bonzai. i dont see much getting fatter and taller yet in its new massive pot, but the new green growth no longer looks ill =)

This is my only NL auto. the 2 other seeds were duds ( i get 100% success with 'good' seeds) and this one had a difficult birth, its slowly but surely recovering, but is tiny.

and finally, my mother indica. you will notice the left top has been cut dead, this top is now trying to grow roots using the new cloning method, the right flank will be doing the same as soon as i can muster some more energy to work, lol. I think this will be a very handsome plant once i finish mangling it, that cluster of leaves mid left has to go, every other side branch is growing up nicely and allowing room for long buds, but that one is staying small and squat it will almost be a plant within a plant if it keeps up, thats an experiment for another day tho.

As soon as I saw it I thought that it was a great idea that you had. As growers I think we all look at everything differently and wonder how it could be applied to our hobby. I will have to admit that I never once thought of using a screen can as a pot though. I do not grow in soil so that's my excuse for the oversite, lol.

As to my 420 time, its running a little short at the moment.
I think i have mentioned before that i run a guild on a game called everquest...yeah i know its just a game, blah blah, lol....but there are now 90 people that look directly to me for leadership and assistance and im overwhelmed as we are still expanding almost exponentially.
soon i will be able to spot who out of my people are likely cadidateds for promotion and my workload should reduce a little again.
i dont see it as a game much any more, but a social center which i run and its my duty to keep my peeps content, lol

LOL i can understand with the puppy, this staff i got recently is such an emo and constantly wants my love and attention. im suppose to be getting rid of him because of growling at the kids, but to be honest im in love with him already and just cant do it and to be fair, i was very tough with him and he is under no illusions about his standing now compared to the kids and hasnt growled at any of them again since we had a little chat about it .

I played wow for a bit, was in a guild called Balls of British Steel =D its a fun game, but i found the tradeskill side to be to simple for myself, im a real geek for things like that, i get much less fun out of playing a character in the game world than i do from being there for the guild and crafting the things they need e.t.c EQ 1 is the first and best MMO i think and although its pretty ugly by modern standards its still the one all others are compared to.

I think its awesome that you live in the uk!! lol a lot of these guys here have a bit of a boys club thing going were they all meet up and help each other harvest and smoke e.t.c i miss out on such being on our little island so im always chuffed to bits to meet other UK growers. Im based in Hampshire btw, you miles away from me?
Think i already meantioned in some other thread ill be setting up a house somewhere for my 420 friends to be able to all meet up one day and get ripped together =D

ok guys just another random mini update.

this is my first serious attempt to do DWC
tap water with a tiny amount of nutes for now...im expecting the PH to be too high...my tap water PH is around 8 so i cant even do my cabbage water trick to correct the PH atm, god i cant wait till i can afford neat gizmos.

soo, the intention.
part of the stalk is below the top section, but is NOT in the water. some of the roots are also not in the water.
i have used celotape to shrink the opening, i find a certain amount of irony in using plant fat based product to help grow another plant kinda a karma thing
im using vermiculite as the grow medium, but only because it was what i have to hand...this is DRY and will not be watered, i figure with the lower stem and upper roots not in water i shouldnt have drowning issues.

to be honest tho, now i have created a 2l dwc (still dont know what hempy means so its not one afaik) i am not happy with it. sure i know people get great results, but i just think the design is vertically unstable, the materials are flimsy and light leaks are high without doubling or tripling the preperation work involved (lol see my creative use of my work socks? =D)

i will be attacking this design, mk2 will still be the same thing, but i will not be using the same materials and i think i have come up with a vacuum driven bubbler idea im goin to play with....watch this space..
oh and the last pick is just for fluffy who likes interesting socks, lol
