Fools Rush In: Newbie's Adventures In Suboptimal Conditions

Fam. I'm so farked this morning.

I have newfound respect for you and everyone else who do these harvests so much more frequently, and with (multiple) plants that are so much bigger.

My small plant took me almost the whole day, HAHAHA! Trim, wash, hang, dry, clean up... I'm wiped.

I'm sure it will get more chill as the protocols become more established, as with any aspect of cultivation! Every step of it was new to me.

Gorgeous structure! And the traditional low and slow has the buds off the stems.

No Shed. The right answer is "leave them and go lie down on the kitchen floor". Looooollll

Thank you! I will break them up!

Congratulations:yahoo: You did a great job with that girl. Nothing beats smoking what you've grown yourself.

Thank you Vet! Wasn't that long ago that I had no gear whatsoever and was excitedly and greedily reading your earlier journals!

Great stuff Sy, well done, she developed into a real looker too. I somehow missed some notifications and only just caught up. It's good you have the hygrometers as I found when drying buds without them that I over did it, but last year I went to whole plant drying and that seemed to work a lot better for me, altho it was too hard to do the bud washing.
It'll be great to see how she smokes and what you do from here! :ganjamon:

Cheers Stunger! Lol with your outdoor grows I can only imagine the challenges regarding labour and stealth..

:yahoo::cheer: Awesome Sy - hope you’re able to take it easy today after a big Monday! Very happy to see a box full of buds there for you :D

:high-five: Thanks Amy, and thanks for all your tips and support! So happy to have you around.

I’ll reiterate what Shed said about clipping buds off stems for low and slow in the fridge. It’s going to be slow enough with that method, definitely safer to get the stems out of the equation

I like to put quick dry testers on the light fixture, usually ready to toke in a day or 2. That’s not really instant of course, but still a quickie!
Me too! Apparently some have a bit more patience than others :).

Haha, on the topic of impatience, I discovered something quite awesome. Sadly it is somewhat gear-specific..

I've been able to put fresh flower into my Dynavap, vape off the moisture in a couple of draw cycles, and then vape the actual flower effectively. Yes it is still grassy, but it's surprisingly smooth! Take note @Stunger @McRib @Bionic Chronic NZ :ganjamon:

I imagine this could work in any (non-electronic) dry herb vape.

I thought you did an outstanding job for a first grow, as you didn't just a grow a random bush but you trained it to exactly the shape you wanted. Altho in saying that I don't want to put you in the camp of bikini wax trimmers, but you know what I mean - well done!

Wow - marvelous - you are indeed ready for cannabonsai!

Hey fam,

With Desert taken down, it feels right to me to end my first grow journal here. A lot has happened!

And it would be nice to have a fresh start. The first page of this journal no longer represents where I've gotten to.

I'm aware that certain closing rituals haven't yet been completed: the dry weight, the smoke report, etc.

I will follow-up on those things in my new journal. Which I have not started yet. But I will tag you all in it, and would love to see every single one of you there. At the same time, no pressure, of course.

I appreciate having had you all along for this journey. I'm amazed that some of you persisted through those rough early stages, where it wasn't clear where this all was even going, LOL! This place really saved my 2020. Thank you.

Sometimes, it is enough just to have beautiful and imperfect plans. But I was lucky enough to have those plans actually become something!

I'm going to take a few days before starting the new journal. But I will likely still be around and catching up on your journals.

Take care! See you soon!

:welldone: sy!

You can post them in the new journal, but I recommend posting them here as well so all the data on this grow resides in one place for those reading through.

:Namaste: :green_heart:

Good point! Can I still post here after the journal has been moved to "Completed"?

I would have to agree with Shed, that for completeness it looks more tidy and together to post those summary findings like the smoke report to this journal which they pertain to. I would suggest to start another journal for your next phase, but keep this one open until you've posted your final grow details here.

Will do! I've already asked for the journal to be moved but I will come back to post the deets!

Mate. Your covid mask is on upside down.
:high-five:

Sorry - I get complacent, being in New Zealand and all... *FLEX*

I kid I kid... :Namaste:

It is a lot of work. Luckily my crop all came in stages. Next year I'll have mostly clones. They will ripen all at once. Gonna need some help from the wife next year. I can already hear her bitching about sticky fingers and scissors...lol.

Again, nice harvest mate. I'm excited to see bubba grow up now.

Hey cheers everyone!

It was lovely to have some time off this week.

I've just pulled the trigger on my second journal!

I would love to see you all there. :Namaste: :ganjamon::green_heart:

 :thanks: Really fun grow! Looking forward to the next... and the smoke report from this one

You could also back in here with a link to your new journal, once it’s up. Makes it easy for everyone to find :)

Thank you Amy. And done!!

Three days and I missed all the fun. Nicely done Sye, and congrats on some fine looking top shelf product! Great structure on the bonsai looking branches. :bravo:

Cheers Mr S! It was great to be able to check up on your harvest after I was done. :hookah::headbanger:

What a great journal experience!

Thanks for letting me be apart of it Sye. I can’t wait for number 2, not like a poo number 2, like journal number 2.

Why not both??? :high-five:

Thanks Tra. Love your journal so much as well! Will be back to catch up soon. :cheer:

Congrats on that harvest mate. She looks great. I hope she's as potent as she is pretty. It's onward with bubba now..lol

Hahahhaa ohh I haven't roped my GF in yet. I almost forgot that was an option

Thanks dear Jim. Are you taking a break entirely over winter? I need to catch up on your journal too!

Bubba is looking great. Resuming updates now in the new journal!

Desert post-harvest update

Just a little one. It's been about a week since harvest!

I've had the bulk of the buds in the cardboard drying box, and a small sample in a plastic container open to the rest of the fridge. This allows me to compare the difference in drying rate between the two.

On smell containment, the cardboard box is a success, although this will need repeating with some louder flower.

Today, I've got both containers sitting on the kitchen counter, and am letting the RH stabilise to see where they are at. It's been about 45 minutes.

Cardboard box: 71%
Plastic container: 89%

A little bit weird to me, these numbers, considering the buds in the plastic container were sitting in the open in the fridge. Could be the cardboard itself aiding the drying?

Look forward to repeating this experiment daily for the next few days.

Next time, I might remove some buds from the cardboard box entirely and put them in a similar sized plastic container just to eliminate as much variability as possible. Just for checking the RH.

Smoke (vape) report

So I've been able to jam wet buds into the Dynavap, as some of you will recall me mentioning.

It's a way for me to:

a) have an early sample;
b) examine changes as the dry progresses; and
c) measure the progress of the dry itself.

It's quite weird vaping wet buds. You get this hot wet air as the vape draws the excess moisture out first.

When they were fresh off the plant, it took about 3 draw-cycles to rid the bud of moisture.

At this point, it takes 1 preliminary draw-cycle before I can taste the actual bud.

It's nice. It's got a subtle fruity flavour. Like fresh watermelon juice or something. Also a slight peppery smell. Definitely still grassy, of course.

The buzz is mellow and relaxing. At this point, not as potent or as narcotic as my Northern Lights flower, but it's early days. Not racy, not heady.

Very friendly. :hookah:

:thumb::thanks:
